Roomzzz Manchester City
36 Princess Street

There are certainly advantages to choosing an apartment over a standard hotel room, and Roomzzz Aparthotel makes the idea even more appealing. Units are self-contained (meaning they come with fully-equipped kitchens), and have a high-end, contemporary finish. The rooms come equipped with impressive technological features and have stylish bathrooms. Roomzzz is located right in Manchester's city center, so noise is a possibility on lower floors, and some apartments show some wear. That said, if a luxury apartment stay in central Manchester is what you're after, this is a clear winner.

Velvet Hotel
2 Canal Street

The interiors of Velvet are unabashedly plush, and both the lobby and lounge bar are impressive examples of maximalist design. It's located in the heart of Manchester's gay district, and within walking distance of Chinatown and the Piccadilly railway station. Each room is individually styled, and none fall short on amenities. The basement restaurant offers quality dining, and the bar hosts DJ nights on the weekends. Noise can be an issue when the nightlife really gets going, but it's a fun and fabulous hotel for those looking for a more energetic scene.

Great John Street Hotel
Great John Street

It's rare to find a hotel set in a lovely old Victorian schoolhouse, and even rarer to find one renovated with such a degree of panache -- interiors effortlessly blend original fixtures with vintage pieces and warm contemporary design. Rooms are no less impressive, with charming eclectic furnishings and smart, modern finishes. The location isn't bad either -- central yet quiet next to the famous Coronation Street Studios. A rooftop garden with hot tub overlooking Manchester is also a special touch. Those looking for more budget-friendly options might want to check out the Radisson Blu Edwardian a few blocks away.

Princess St. Hotel
18-24 Princess Street

Although impressive from the outside, the Arora Hotel doesn't quite deliver with its interiors, which are smart and modern, but largely lacking in character. Rooms, too, are perfectly adequate, with all the amenities you'd expect, but offer little to raise them above the average. The on-site restaurant, 24 Bar & Grill, does promise an impressive menu, and the hotel's excellent central location means there are plenty of other dining options at its doorstep. All in all, the hotel is a pretty good value for where it's situated, but travelers seeking a bit more style might consider The Midland nearby.

Premier Inn Manchester Airport (M56/J6) Runger Lane South
Wilmslow Road Runger Lane, Manchester Airport

The two-and-a-half-pearl Premier Inn Manchester Airport (M56/J6) Runger Lane South offers a convenient location and good overall value. It’s a no-frills, budget-friendly property that’s best suited for travelers on the go looking for a short stay. Highlights include a breakfast and dinner restaurant with a bar, and a morning airport shuttle and on-site parking for an extra fee. Its 195 guest rooms are modern, but slightly drab despite accents in pleasant shades of purple. All are relatively spacious and comfortable, with kettles and free Wi-Fi, but bathrooms are small and dated, with cramped stall showers, and some past guests have complained about nonworking AC. Travelers seeking a stay with comparable rates and more amenities that's even closer to the airport might want to consider the mid-range Clayton Hotel Manchester Airport.

Gardens Hotel
55 Piccadilly

The Gardens Hotel is an unfussy budget option in a prime location that's surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops, and close to tram and bus stops as well as the Manchester Piccadilly train station. Features are a bit sparse at this modest property, but there's a cozy lobby bar that serves light bites, and a full English breakfast is included in rates. Other perks include a business corner and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. The 99 guest rooms are lackluster in terms of decor, stuffy due to lack of air-conditioning, and some do not have windows, but they're clean and equipped with flat-screen TVs and coffee/tea-making facilities. For something with more features, check out the Premier Inn Manchester City Centre - Portland Street, which has a restaurant and bar.

Smugglers' Notch Resort
4323 Vermont Rte 108 S, State Route 108

With hundreds of apartments spread across five communities in Vermont’s Green Mountains, Smugglers' Notch Resort is a mid-range, village-style resort popular with families. Every unit includes a full kitchen and some have fireplaces, though the decor throughout is outdated. Kid-friendly activities abound year-round, including multiple kid and teen zones, supervised activities, and a number of on-site pools and waterslides. The resort runs a free shuttle that takes guests to the three ski mountains that comprise Smugglers' Notch. The Trapp Family Lodge is another family option in the area, though it's typically pricier and lacks the in-room kitchens and waterslides found here.

Waterford Marina Hotel
Canada Street

The 81-room Waterford Marina Hotel is a no-frills mid-range property situated on the banks of the River Suir in Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland. Though decor is dated and bare bones, rooms are clean and comfortable, equipped with tube-style TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and lovely views of the river. There’s an on-site restaurant that serves Irish and continental cuisine, and breakfast (for an added fee). The bar has a lovely terrace overlooking the water, and offers live music on the weekends. This budget-friendly property draws tourists and caters to business travelers, with several meeting rooms and conference facilities, a small business center, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Travelers seeking more amenities might want to check out the nearby Tower Hotel and Leisure Center, which has several dining choices as well as a leisure center with a pool, sauna, steam room, and fitness center.

Rabbit Hill Inn
48 Lower Waterford Rd, PO Box 55

The 19-room Rabbit Hill Inn combines the peaceful atmosphere of Northern Vermont with an elegant B&B experience. The clean, spacious rooms are more "L.L. Bean cozy" than "Manhattan chic," and each is individually decorated. Outstanding features in some of the rooms include wood-burning fireplaces and soaking tubs for two. All essential B&B elements -- antiques, comfy beds, a cat (named Reese) -- are accounted for, as well as some less common B&B perks (free Wi-Fi, and an on-site tavern with a skilled barman). This Vermont inn offers a lovely restaurant with free breakfast, personalized service, and an escape from technology -- rooms are TV-free and cell phones have limited service.

Hotel Gotham
100 King Street

The 60-room Hotel Gotham is an upscale property with a swish, whimsical design and excellent location a three-minute walk from the Arndale Shopping Centre and five minutes from the Northern Quarter. Occupying a former bank, the hotel invokes a "Batman" aesthetic with a dark, sexy palette and fun decor such as butler statues and binoculars. Modern rooms are sophisticated and equipped with Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs, but some travelers may be disappointed that most lack bathtubs. Also on the downside, there are no spa, gym, or pool here, though a well-regarded, all-day restaurant and cool lounge with outdoor seating are on-site. Travelers wanting a spa should consider The Midland, though expect more classically elegant than modern design.
