Middlebury Inn
14 Courthouse Square

The 71-room mid-range Middlebury Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and looks lifted right out of a picture book on colonial New England. The hotel includes popular on-site Morgan’s Tavern, serving excellent farm-to-table meals, and Waterfalls Day Spa. Guest rooms are quaint and comfortable, with an antique ambience, though we did spot some wear and tear and outdated features that could use an overhaul. Additionally, some rooms are located in a 1960s motel-style annex that lacks the same atmosphere of the main buildings. Guests looking for a more secluded, stylish bed-and-breakfast should try the Amee Farm Lodge, which has rustic-chic rooms outside of Pittsfield, Vermont (a 20-minute drive from Killington), at a similar price point.

Killington Grand Resort Hotel
228 E Mountain Rd

The 200-room upper-middle-range Killington Grand Resort offers modern rooms right at the foot of Killington Ski Resort. Many rooms have fireplaces and multi-room apartments with full kitchens make this a great choice for families. The hotel has an almost limitless list of outdoor activities on offer year-round, as well as a heated indoor-outdoor pool, hot tub, and on-site spa. Walls are thin, making noise from neighboring rooms an issue. Guests looking for a more intimate property in Killington should try Greenbrier Inn, a quaint hotel that serves a great free breakfast at a slightly lower price point.

Townhouse Hotel Manchester
Hotel Manchester 101 Portland Street, Manchester City Centre

Townhouse Hotel Manchester is a four-pearl property in a restored 19th-century heritage building, which was once a cotton warehouse before it was transformed into an upscale hotel with 85 stylish contemporary rooms. Higher-category rooms have Nespresso machines and Bose Bluetooth speakers, but unlike many of its upscale competitors, Townhouse Hotel Manchester has neither a fitness center, spa, or swimming pool, and rooms lack minibars. Travelers might want to check out The Midland, another upscale heritage hotel, which has a health club with a pool and squash court.

ABode Manchester
107 Piccadilly

Four-pearl Abode Manchester is a stylish hotel in the heart of Manchester that's housed in a beautiful former factory building. Shopping, nightlife, and transport links are all within a 10-minute walk, making the location is hard to beat. A brasserie serves food all day, including both hot and cold options for breakfast, and has live music and DJs on the weekends. The 61 rooms have a trendy, loft-like style with original features plus free Wi-Fi and air-conditioning. Five suites on the top floor have a similar look, but add high-end amenities including Nespresso machines and Bose sound systems. Some maintenance issues have been reported. Guests looking for a more independent stay could check out Roomzzz Aparthotel Manchester, which has similar rates, though the location isn't quite as convenient.

Field Guide Lodge
433 Mountain Rd

The charming three-pearl Field Guide in Stowe, Vermont impresses with its modern decor inspired by the look of a traditional ski lodge. Its intimate size of just 30 rooms that range from standard rooms to whole cottages makes the hotel feel more like a bed-and-breakfast -- and the free breakfast provided only reinforces that vibe. The on-site restaurant and bar, Picnic Social, is a local hot spot -- just note that dinner and weekend brunch are the only meals served here, while the bar is open after evening. The hotel is a 13-minute drive away from the slopes (and the rates reflect that), but it's also within walking distance of town. For a different type of mid-range property, consider the 96-room Trapp Family Lodge, which has dozens more amenities and activities.

Ibis Budget Manchester Centre Pollard Street
2 Pollard Street

The ibis budget Manchester Centre Pollard Street does not pretend to be anything other than what it is -- a solid value option a short tram ride from central Manchester. The 150 rooms at this two-pearl hotel are basic but spotless, done up in shades of sage green. They're outfitted with flat-screen TVs and cubicle-style bathrooms, but some guests feel that these do not provide enough privacy. Downstairs, the hotel is decorated with splashes of cobalt, lime green, and bright orange, and there is an area that serves a reasonably priced continental breakfast buffet. Travelers looking for a budget hotel in the center of Manchester might want to try the Premier Inn Manchester City Centre - Portland Street.

Willard Street Inn - Bed & Breakfast Mansion
349 S Willard St

The three-pearl Willard Street Inn serves a heart-warming dose of traditional New England charm in its 14 turn-of-the-20th-century rooms, breakfast solarium, and landscaped back garden, arguably the prettiest in downtown Burlington. The period rooms fit snuggly into the days-of-yore design, with details such as four poster beds, gas fireplaces, antique armoires, and marble-topped tables, all with views of Lake Champlain and the mountains beyond. The neighborhood offers yet more handsome historical houses to enjoy on a stroll, but the not-too-slight incline of the 20-minute walk downtown may challenge anyone with mobility issues or poor footwear. If so, the more central Lang House can supply a similar style, quality, and charm, without the trek.

Granville Hotel
The Quay

The Granville Hotel is an historic property with traditional but well-maintained decor in the center of Waterford. The building has been a hotel for more than 150 years, and is popular with tour groups drawn to the old-fashioned ambiance and hospitality -- and the full Irish breakfast. Big groups sometimes overwhelm the one small elevator, and the hotel caters to an older crowd, but it provides an unmatched experience for travelers seeking a traditional place to stay in Ireland’s oldest city. Fun fact: The hotel bar is named for Thomas Francis Meagher, a 19th-century Irish nationalist who was born in the house and eventually became governor of Montana. For a traditional vibe near the water at a slightly lower price, try Dooley's Hotel, which lacks The Granville's history but has a pub with live entertainment.

The Essex, Vermont's Culinary Resort & Spa
70 Essex Way

The 117-room upper-middle-range Essex Inn Culinary Resort & Spa is a rural-style retreat dedicated to food and wellness just 20 minutes from Burlington by car. Cooking classes are available in the resort’s teaching kitchens and the attractive spa features a 25-yard indoor lap pool, outdoor hot tub, and a full line of massage and beauty services. Large guest rooms have a country inn charm with modern features like flat-screen TVs and Keurig coffeemakers, though some details could use an upgrade. The resort also has outdoor tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course, though guests looking for a more intimate bed-and-breakfast right in Burlington should try Made Inn Vermont B&B, for an urban-chic stay with excellent breakfasts.

Topnotch Resort
4000 Mountain Rd

The 89-room upscale Topnotch Resort has impeccable city-meets-country minimalist design and a huge selection of on-site activities and features. Rooms are stylish and range from classic Deluxe Rooms with woodsy accents to multi-room vacation homes. The hotel’s year-round tennis program features pro-certified trainers and there are also several indoor and outdoor pools on site as well as a spa. This is to say nothing of the two outstanding on-site restaurants -- Flannel and The Roost -- both of which have locally sourced menus and draw crowds that include locals and tourists. Guests looking to stay in central Stowe should try Green Mountain Inn, where rooms have a country-inn vibe, though the property lacks resort features like a pool.
