Inn on Putney Road Bed and Breakfast
192 Putney Rd

Forty Putney Road is a small, riverfront B&B with lovely scenery. The decor is more understated than the classic New England style of big floral prints and four-poster beds, but it feels updated and fresh. A two-course, gourmet free breakfast is a highlight here, along with the on-site intimate pub and long list of local brews. No children under 12 are allowed at the inn, encouraging a romantic stay. Most rooms have cozy gas fireplaces, but like most B&Bs, the inn doesn't offer a fitness center or spa. Additional perks here include rooms stocked with free goodies like snacks and drinks, and an indoor Jacuzzi overlooking the grounds.

Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa
1746 Mountain Rd, PO Box 369

The 117-room Stoweflake Resort & Spa offers a huge selection of on-site activities across 60 wooded and landscaped acres just five minutes from the quaint center of Stowe, Vermont, by car. Rooms range from classic hotel rooms to multi-room townhouses, and though they are all comfortable and clean, the decor is outdated and a bit stuffy. The hotel’s main feature is the Spa at Stoweflake, which has an indoor hydrotherapy waterfall, several hot tubs, 30 treatment rooms, a full gym, indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a beauty salon. Guests looking for a more intimate, contemporary setting near Stowe should try Mountain Road Resort, which puts a modern-retro spin on country chic at a slightly lower price point.

Premier Inn Manchester Airport (M56/J6) Runger Lane North
Runger Lane, Wilmslow Road

The two-and-a-half-pearl Premier Inn Manchester Airport (M56/J6) Runger Lane North offers comfortable accommodations for travelers passing through Manchester Airport. It’s a no-frills, budget-friendly hotel that’s best suited for short stays, but it does have an on-site restaurant that serves breakfast for an extra charge, plus there's an a la carte dinner menu and a bar. There's also a popular chain coffee shop on-site and a free, one-way airport shuttle. The hotel's 166 modern guest rooms are basic and although they're accented with pretty shades of purple, the overall look is a bit drab. Still, units are comfortable and generally well-maintained, and all have AC, flat-screen TVs, kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Travelers looking for an upscale property that's even closer to the airport can consider Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport.

Le Ville Hotel
36-42 Canal Street

Le Ville Hotel is a 24-room budget property located on Canal Street in central Manchester, in the heart of the city’s Gay Village. This is also the center of the city’s vibrant party scene, making the hotel popular with party-goers -- be aware that weekends can get especially noisy. Le Ville's location commands high room rates, but other budget hotels offer better value. Travelers might want to consider the Premier Inn Manchester City Centre Portland Street, which has an on-site restaurant and bar,  a “Quiet Time” policy, and good online deals. Gardens Hotel is another good budget choice, with much larger rooms than at Le Ville Hotel.

Green Mountain Inn
18 Main Street, PO Box 60

The 107-room upper-middle-range Green Mountain Inn has the charm and intimacy of a country inn with many four-pearl features, including free afternoon tea, a heated pool, and massage services. The hotel offers a wide selection of accommodations right on Stowe’s Main Street, from traditional hotel rooms to full townhouses. All exude a cozy, antique New England ambience and many have fireplaces and private hot tubs. There are two on-site restaurants, including The Whip, which draws locals and tourists for upscale pub food. Guests looking for a more modern, secluded mountain resort near Stowe should try Topnotch Resort, though rooms are much more expensive.

DoubleTree by Hilton Burlington Vermont
870 Williston Rd

The 309-room upper-middle-range Sheraton Burlington Hotel is the largest conference facility in the area, and attracts large groups, business travelers, families, and visitors to the University of Vermont, which is a 10-minute walk away. There's a lot to like about this property, and the lovely interiors -- a twist on mountain lodges -- put it a step above many Sheraton outposts. Add to that the large, light-flooded indoor pool and free shuttle to popular area destinations, and this hotel is far above other chain options in the area. Guest rooms are spacious, clean, and elegant, with super-comfortable beds and large, modern bathrooms. Those wanting to be closer to Lake Champlain and downtown should consider the Hilton Burlington -- it's cheaper, but far less charming.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport
Chicago Avenue, Manchester Airport

Being the only hotel physically connected to Manchester Airport, via an elevated walkway, is certainly convenient -- and the hotel's large, airy lobby is actually reminiscent of an airport check-in area. Rooms are smart and well-equipped, though at the mercy of the air-conditioning as windows don't open. An on-site health club with pool and gym is a bonus, but the prices at the hotel restaurant are a little inflated. There are a few other hotel options, such as the Hilton or Crowne Plaza, which are also four-star and tend to be slightly cheaper.

Swift House Inn
25 Stewart Ln

The historic Swift House Inn is located within walking distance of downtown Middlebury. The hotel's 20 rooms are spread throughout the Main House (formerly a Governor's Mansion), the Carriage House, and the Gate House. The Gate House rooms -- located a half-block from the Main House -- are the least expensive, in part due to traffic noise from Route 7. Room decor varies, allowing guests to choose a room depending on personal style. Some rooms offer a classic New England B&B vibe with floral wallpaper, fireplaces, and four-poster beds, while others are more understated, with soft-toned walls and tasteful furniture. One of the inn's highlights is its delicious and free breakfast, and an on-site restaurant, Jessica's, is a popular destination for both guests and locals.

Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa
London Road, Piccadilly

Under its impressively sweeping modern frontage, the upper-middle-range Macdonald Manchester is a pretty traditional, even conventional, hotel. Rooms are good enough, with plenty in the way of amenities, though most have a fairly uninspiring finish. The steak restaurant is a strong selling point, but the spa could use a pool or whirlpool (though it is a plus that there is a spa at all for this category). The hotel's convenient location is one of its strong points -- it's just around the corner from Manchester's main train terminal, Piccadilly Station. If you're looking for something in the area, it may be worth your while to check out the rates at the nearby DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Piccadilly.

Crowne Plaza Manchester City Centre
70 Shudehill

From its jazzy glass frontage to its sleek, angular interiors, this upscale hotel pushes all the right design buttons for those keen on unabashedly bold contemporary styling. The location is great if you're not after a city center setting, and rooms come with Egyptian cotton sheets and free "sleep packs" with aromatherapy sprays. Dining and drinking options are impressive, but the health and fitness facilities are limited to just a small gym and there's no parking on-site. The rates aren't bad for this caliber of hotel, but if you're on a strict budget, consider the Holiday Inn Express around the corner.
