Bodega Bay Lodge
103 Coast Highway 1

The 83-room, upscale Bodega Bay Lodge is located on seven gorgeous ocean view acres, one hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The property is an integral part of the Sonoma landscape, with lush lawns, rustic stone walls, and fire pits dotting the grounds. Wine tastings, good coffee, and hearty artisanal food add to the luxe vibe, and spacious guest rooms with hardwood floors, comfortable seating areas, and balconies with phenomenal views combine to make the Lodge a destination in itself.

Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa
44600 Indian Wells Ln

The 530-room Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort and Spa is a modern and luxurious mega resort with seven pools, access to two top-rated golf courses, and a medical spa with non-invasive skin tightening treatments. It’s close to a small town with easy access to shopping areas. Though the resort is big, special events can make certain spots feel crowded and there's a daily resort fee and parking fee. The big and pretty rooms are decorated in sunset tones; villas have butler service. It’s worth it to compare rates with similar properties, such as the Rancho Las Palmas, which has a water park and is a little closer to the airport.

New Haven Village Suites
3 Long Wharf Dr

The mid-range New Haven Village Suites has 112 reasonably priced suites, including Studios and One- and Two-Bedroom units with kitchens, and many with fireplaces. Free breakfast is served in a casual dining room, and there's an on-site market that's open 24/7. The property also includes a 24-hour business center, a clubhouse for meetings, and a small gym with cardio machines, along with free parking and Wi-Fi. Be aware that renovations on the exterior areas has been underway as of late 2015. The property is an eight- to 12-minute drive to Yale University, with free shuttle service provided. For swankier on-campus accommodations, travelers might want to compare rates with the Study at Yale.

Whalers Cove Oceanfront Resort
2640 Puuholo Rd

Made up of 39 huge one-, two-, and three-bedroom luxury condos (each with a kitchen and washer and dryer), this condo-hotel complex offers stunning views of the Pacific from its small but gorgeous pool and every room's balcony. Sure, there's no sandy beach, restaurant, gym, overnight desk staff, or even air conditioning, but these views are worth it.

Hotel St. Augustine
347 Washington Ave

This quaint, minimalist 24-room hotel is set on a quiet residential street just south of the South Beach action, within a few minutes' walk of some of Miami's best local hot spots. You won't find any art on the walls in the straightforward, meticulously clean rooms, but you will find 42-inch flat-screen TVs, stereos, and excellent multi-head steam showers. The extremely low-key property doesn't have a full restaurant or pool on site, but it does offer free breakfast in its bright little lobby lounge (where free coffee is available throughout the day) and the beach is a four-minute walk away. Travelers looking for a South Beach boutique hotel with just a touch more glitz and easier beach access could check out Essex House Hotel, though the shower experience will less memorable.

Castle Kaha Lani
4460 Nehe Rd

This 75-unit condo resort in Lihue offers some of Kauai’s most affordable units, and on that strength alone it’s worth it for families who just want a place to crash on the island. Still, this place is cheap for a reason: minimal service, small pool, inconvenient location, and rooms that vary widely in quality.

Best Western Surf City
19360 Beach Blvd

The lower-middle-range Best Western Surf City offers a sensible alternative to the pricey hotels on the nearby beach. This motor-court-style property is less than 10 minutes from the Pacific Coast Highway and the Huntington Beach Pier, and 25 to 30 minutes from Disney and Anaheim’s other top attractions. A hot breakfast buffet is included in the room rates, and it has an outdoor pool and whirlpool, business center, and coin-operated laundry room. Its 62 spacious rooms have outside entrances, and include mini-fridges and coffeemakers, while Suites have separate whirlpool tubs and walk-in showers. Rates are attractive for this typically pricey area, but then the hotel is not on the beach. Another budget option travelers could consider is the Comfort Suites Huntington Beach.

Embassy Suites Los Angeles Intl Airport South
1440 E Imperial Ave

The upper-middle-range Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles International Airport South is a large all-suites property located only a six-minute drive away from the airport. The 349 suites have spacious bedrooms and separate living area, and are equipped with two flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Premium Rooms offer extras like free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and Bluetooth docks; and some rooms facing the airport have views of planes taking off and landing. Airport transfers, breakfast, and drinks during the manager's reception every evening are included in room rates, and there are many extra features, such as a swimming pool, a 24-hour business center, a fitness center, and a restaurant and bar. But it's worth comparison shopping with the Hyatt Place Los Angeles, which has similar rates and amenities plus free parking.

Hilton Suites Ocean City Oceanfront
3200 North Baltimore Ave.

The upper-middle-range Hilton Suites Ocean City Oceanfront is good for families with its multiple restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools -- one with slides and fountains -- and a kids’ club. All 225 rooms have full kitchens, separate living rooms with sofa beds, and modern bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. The beach is right outside, and there are entertainment and restaurants within a five-minute walk, including Jolly Roger Amusement Park. However, it is not convenient to the popular amusement parks and shops at the south end of the boardwalk, which are a 10-minute drive away. While kids will find fun activities here, those looking for a truly fun-filled stay should check out Carousel Resort Hotel and Condominiums, where there are a bounce house, dance parties, a game room, and even an indoor ice-skating rink.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles-Downey
8425 Firestone Blvd

Located across from the Downey Civic Center and within a 30-minute drive to Downtown LA and Disneyland, Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles-Downey offers an ideal location for both business guests and tourists who want access to a variety of sights. Thanks to a major 2015 renovation of the atrium and common areas, the upscale hotel displays a sophisticated, modern look with space-themed accents that are a nod to Downey’s status as home to the Apollo Space Program. The 2,190 rooms were not renovated, so their decor is a bit generic and dated, but they're still spacious, with a two-room layout of a bedroom and lounge area. Amenities such as a 24-hour fitness center and business center, a heated indoor pool, and an on-site restaurant and bar add to the appeal. A full breakfast plus snacks and drinks at the hotel’s nightly reception are included. Travelers looking for a budget hotel in the same vicinity should try the Days Inn Stonewood.
