Hotel Angeleno
170 North Church Lane

Hotel Angeleno is a circular 1970s-built property located along the 405 Freeway, five minutes by car from the Getty Center and UCLA with panoramic city views from the 17th-floor restaurant and bar. Geared toward business travelers, this hotel has five meeting rooms, a business center, a lobby coffee shop, a modern gym, and an outdoor pool with a bar and fireplace terrace, which is available for events. Modernly designed rooms offer city views from balconies, flat-screen TVs, and some have mini-fridges. Unfortunately, traffic noises can be bothersome in rooms. A quieter nearby option may be the W Los Angeles Westwood.

Hilton Garden Inn San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge
1800 Powell St

The Hilton Garden Inn San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge is a mid-range chain property that's a good option for San Francisco travelers who don't mind being outside the city. The safe and quiet Emeryville location offers outstanding bay views, and is about 15 to 30 minutes by car from Oakland and San Francisco. Rooms and suites are classic and clean, if slightly dated, and have microwaves, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel offers a large modern fitness center, an outdoor hot tub, and a restaurant serving American fare -- breakfast costs extra and there's no pool. Corporate travelers have access to 9,400 square feet of conference space. Long-term and business travelers might prefer the nearby Hyatt House Emeryville/San Francisco Bay Area, which offers modern suites with full kitchens, an outdoor pool, and free breakfast.

Welk Resort San Diego
8860 Lawrence Welk Dr

This huge condo-style time-share resort is part of the Welk Resort Group, which includes other properties in the U.S. and Mexico. Despite its name, this feature-packed resort is located outside Escondido, about 40 to 50 minutes north of San Diego, in a beautiful location. It's very family-friendly with an on-site Pizza Hut, a live theater, multiple pools with waterslides, golf courses, and game rooms. For all its self-contained fun, it's in an isolated location on a huge property that requires a car to get to any other dining, shopping, or attractions. Being a time-share, some of the common areas and pools are open to the public in an effort to bring in more share owners. For a more intimate setting but with far fewer amenities, the nearby Tuscany Hills resort might be worth considering, and its rates are much lower than Welk Resort's.

Haven Montauk
533 W Lake Dr

There are 27 rooms at this stylish two-and-a-half-pearl boutique motel. North of downtown Montauk, the hotel's quiet Montauk Harbor area is just a five-minute walk from the harbor’s bars and restaurants. Just across the street is a beautiful beach that tends to be very quiet. Bright and modern rooms have air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, though bathrooms are fairly small and could use updating. Wi-Fi is free and there’s a good pool, garden, and shop on-site. Guests wanting a more upscale option with a spa should consider Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, though expect to spend a lot more money.

Best Western Greenfield Inn
3000 Enterprise Dr

The mid-range Best Western Greenfield Inn is a full-service pink Victorian-style hotel with lots of attractive amenities, located just off Interstate 94 between the airport and downtown Detroit. Its 209 rooms are clean and comfortable, but a bit dark and traditionally decorated. They’re well equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Hotel highlights include a huge selection of vintage car photos, Mugly’s Food & Spirits, spacious indoor pool, fitness center, and sauna. It also has guest laundry facilities and meeting space. Free shuttle service is provided to the airport, nearby Henry Ford Museum, and other area attractions. Compare rates with the Comfort Inn Near Greenfield Village which, unlike the Best Western, offers a free breakfast.

Richmond Hotel
1757 Collins Ave

The three-pearl, 92-room Richmond Hotel is in the heart of South Beach, walking distance to all the dining, shopping, and nightlife on Lincoln road. It's in an ideal location for tourists, providing direct access to a reserved beach area with loungers and umbrellas (fee). Its rooms are on the small side, with minimal amenities and some have a ton of visible wear, but they also have a charming Art Deco style. The courtyard is one of the best in the area for a mid-range property, complete with a sizable outdoor pool, hot tub, and cushioned loungers, but the gym is small. A poolside cafe is open for breakfast and lunch. The hotel definitely looks and feel old, so for a more modern hotel along the beach in this range, check out the nearby Marseilles Hotel.

Shelborne South Beach
1801 Collins Avenue

After a 2014 renovation combined its Art Deco roots with modern luxury, the Shelborne South Beach became a stylish, upscale pick on Collins Ave in South Beach. The guest rooms have comfortable beds, digital music players, and stocked minibars, and some come with balconies. But standard rooms are on the small side, as are most bathrooms -- which have plush robes and custom toiletries but no bathtubs. Amenities, however, are top-notch, and include beach access and service, a heated pool, spa and fitness center, and multiple dining and drink options that include The Sarsaparilla Club restaurant. Rates are competitive for an upscale beachfront option in South Beach; most competitors, such as the Delano next door, are pricier.

Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach
2330 Kuhio Ave

Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach is a three-pearl hotel in central Waikiki. It's a five-minute walk from the beach. The hotel’s 623 rooms are fresh and modern, with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and balconies (some featuring partial ocean views). Overall, rooms are tad compact and sometimes noisy. The small pool is framed by tightly arranged loungers and overlooks traffic-filled Kuhio Avenue. TR Fire Grill serves American cuisine and has a reasonably-priced breakfast buffet. Its happy hour specials are a nice plus. There are no resort fees and amenities include a fitness center, business center, mini-mart, and free Wi-Fi. For something closer to the beach with bright and modern rooms, it’s worth checking out the Park Shore Waikiki as well. Rates there can often be lower.

The Burgundy Hotel
1501 Merrill Dr

The upper-middle-range Burgundy Hotel offers an intimate boutique experience with luxe touches such as a fine-dining restaurant and an elegant, three-story atrium that resembles a New Orleans courtyard. It’s in a busy commercial area about 15 minutes northwest of downtown Little Rock, surrounded by a good choice of restaurants. The outdoor pool is large and secluded. While the fitness center is small and sparsely equipped, guests can get free passes to a local gym. Its 49 suites are spacious, cheerful, and well appointed, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Competitive rates make it a good choice for travelers seeking stylish accommodations a step above most chain hotels. Travelers seeking lower rates could try the Hilton Garden Inn West Little Rock.

Aqua Bamboo Waikiki
2425 Kuhio Ave

Renovated in 2008, this 93-room Waikiki budget boutique delivers "tropical-urban Zen" via Buddha statues, gurgling fountains, and lush bamboo plants within a former apartment building on scruffy Kuhio Avenue. Five minutes from the beach, with touches like flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. It's a good value and convenient, though the building is a bit worn down.
