Holiday Inn Express Cabo San Lucas
Carretera Transpeninsular Km. 4.5

This Holiday Inn Express outpost is popular with business travelers, but also makes a budget-friendly base for vacationers looking to explore Los Cabos. On a busy highway that's a five-minute drive from downtown Cabo San Lucas, rates here are far lower than at its competitors in town. The 95 modern rooms -- with mostly spacious layouts, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi -- are a fresh (if generic) alternative to the lower-category hotels downtown. The hotel's free breakfast buffet includes rotating local options, and the rooftop pool has distant sea views. We loved the unaffiliated cafe located downstairs, and parking is free. For an option in Cabo San Lucas proper, Hotel Mar de Cortez is a budget spot with a lively bar and pool; rates are lower, but rooms are grungy and worn.

Welk Resorts Sirena Del Mar
Carretera Transpeninsular Km 4.5, Cabo Bello

Perched on a cliff with stunning views of the Sea of Cortez, Welk Resorts Sirena Del Mar is a lovely upscale option outside of downtown Cabo San Lucas. All 108 rooms are spacious and come with excellent features like washers/dryers, full kitchens, and balconies -- many with ocean views. With two gorgeous infinity pools (some of the best views in Cabos), a Mexican restaurant, and a full fitness center, Sirena Del Mar brings most of the goods. One major downside is that the only beach within easy walking distance of the hotel is rocky and not particularly swimmable, something many guests might miss. The daily resort fee covers Wi-Fi and valet parking. For those looking to be right on the beach, check out Casa del Mar Golf Resort & Spa, for around the same price.

Casa Bella Boutique Hotel
Hidaldo #10, Colonia Centro, In Front of Plaza Amelia Wilkes

It can be hard to find much about Cabo San Lucas that's charming -- at least that's what we thought before visiting three-pearl Casa Bella Boutique Hotel. This 14-room property is extra-quaint, and only a five-minute walk from the town's bustling marina. Rooms range from simple Standard Rooms to breezy suites, each individually decorated with thoughtful homey details and chunky, rustic furniture. The flower-filled courtyard holds a small pool, and the one-room spa offers Mexico-inspired treatments. Some noise from the wild strip behind the hotel is audible and there are no TVs, but the massive bathrooms and hacienda-inspired style are hard to dislike. It may be worth considering nearby Hotel Mar de Cortez -- it's cheaper and has a full restaurant -- but its charm-factor isn't even comparable.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal
Camino Del Mar 1

The 118-room Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is so exclusive that reaching it requires driving through a striking private tunnel. Set on a long sweep of beach at the base of towering mountains, the style here seamlessly blends modern design and local artisanal details. Rooms have gorgeous hardwood accents plus massive bathrooms and terraces with hot tubs, and select casitas open to the ocean with private pools and fire pits. Oceanside dining and locally sourced menus are a highlight, as are the infinity pools overlooking the beach. There's also a stunner of an organic spa, a modern gym, and a posh boutique. Sadly, the ocean here isn't swimmable, and those looking to be able to take a dip in the sea should consider Hacienda Beach Club & Residences, right in Cabo San Lucas.

Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar
Corredor Turistico KM 10, Lote D, Cabo del Sol

The upscale Sheraton Grand Los Cabos features 270 rooms spread out across colorful buildings on pristine beachfront grounds. Rooms are large and all have lovely private balconies (many with ocean views), as well as spacious bathrooms with tubs and separate showers. The property offers a private beach that's rarely crowded (though the waves can get a bit rough), in addition to five pools, including one with a swim-up bar, another with an infinity-edge, and a kids' pool with a waterslide and other fun features. Other features consist of a kids' club, large and modern fitness facilities, and a spa, along with a range of well-regarded restaurants. For those who prefer more entertainment, the Dreams Los Cabos Suites Golf Resort & Spa has poolside DJs and nightly shows.

Hotel Mar de Cortez
#140 Lazaro Cardenas

Smack in the middle of rowdy downtown Cabo San Lucas, the Hotel Mar de Cortez has a loyal following. This budget option is well-located for partying, great tacos, or "massages," though most rooms stay blessedly quiet and the garden-like courtyard pool is a major plus. The 88 rooms  are fairly dismal -- expect to see old bedspreads, lots of wear and dated furniture, and a lack of televisions or mini-fridges. Bathrooms could also use an overhaul. A popular breakfast and lunch restaurant is on-site and the happy hour in the evening is lively, though while rates here are rock bottom, there are far nicer options nearby. Check out Casa Bella Boutique Hotel around the corner if you have a bit more to spend per night -- it's worth the upgrade.

El Ameyal Hotel & Family Suites
Carr. Transpeninsular Km 3. 5, Colonia El Tezal

Situated a 15-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas, this mid-range, 26-room hotel is a simple property that attracts mainly families on a budget drawn by the spacious suites with kitchenettes. The outdoor pool -- complete with a hot tub and drink service -- is a lovely spot for a quiet day in the sun, and the adjacent restaurant serves tasty local cuisine in an airy palapa. Massages, body treatments, and a traditional sweat lodge are available at the spa for a fee. Rooms are rather plain but pleasant, and they feature air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. It's worth upgrading to a suite for a separate living room, dining area, and kitchenette. The beach is a five-minute drive away, so those wanting an oceanfront stay may prefer Hotel Santa Fe Los Cabos by Villa Group -- though El Ameyal offers better value.

Marina Fiesta Resort & Spa
Blvd. La Marina, Lotes,37 y 38, Colonia Centro

Marina Fiesta Resort looms large over Cabo San Lucas' bustling marina, less than a 10-minute walk to Medano Beach. The 155 mid-range rooms are pleasant and clean, though the nautical theme and dated bathrooms are disappointing. With two pools and a swim-up bar, mature couples mix with bachelorette parties and small groups of friends creating a lively -- but generally not wild -- vibe. There's also a modern gym with a trainer and a dated spa. Dining is varied, with almost every restaurant in the hotel's Golden Zone -- a seaside promenade with options ranging from Japanese to Italian -- partaking in the all-inclusive Dine Out plan. As an alternative, Tesoro Los Cabos has lower rates and more modern rooms on the other side of the marina.

Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa
Paseo de la Marina No. 4750

The adult-only, upscale Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa tops the list of party hotels in downtown Cabo. All 169 suites at Breathless are purposefully minimalistic in decor, but feature modern technology: iPads, Nespresso machines, and free minibars. Two gorgeous infinity pools grant lovely ocean views, and poolside drink and food service is available. The Freestyle Pool hosts all-day parties and adult-oriented shows, and staff organizes evening pub crawls. The hip hotel features a tranquil spa, 24-hour fitness center, and 11 (mostly) all-inclusive restaurants and bars to grab a bite or drink. The location on Playa el Medano and overlooking the marina means noise is heard from early mornings into the night. For those looking for a quieter chic hotel, check out Bahia Hotel & Beach Club for a much lower price -- but rates aren't all-inclusive and there aren't any bikini contests.

Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos
Corredor Turistico Km. 10, Lote D

This 273-unit upscale resort, as its name suggests, is a hacienda-style property containing 20 individual buildings resembling a Mexican Colonial village. Located outside the thick of Cabo's action, the complex -- part of a quieter golf resort development called Cabo del Sol -- offers spacious studios and apartments with beachy Mexican decor, flat-screen TVs, kitchens, and spacious bathrooms. Immaculate grounds contain two pools, an expansive beach, and the outstanding Pitayahas restaurant with a 350-label wine cellar (you can ask for a tour). Guests may want to become owners after the persuasive time-share pitches, and can usually expect individual attention from the staff. Those who seek nightly entertainment and all-inclusive packages should consider Villa Del Palmar
