Sea Dell Motel
5000 Overseas Hwy

The two-pearl Sea Dell Motel is a budget-friendly stay centrally located in Marathon, about a five-minute drive from the public Sombrero Beach. The 25 rooms are full of kitschy decor and bright colors, plus useful amenities such as microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Being a value property, amenities are limited to a well-maintained pool and laundry facilities, though most guests spend their days exploring the area. Those who fancy something a little more modern, however, might want to look to the two-and-a-half pearl Holiday Inn Express & Suites Marathon, but expect higher rates.

Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina
2051 Shelter Island Drive

Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina is a motel-style property that sits among a lush green landscape next to San Diego’s Shelter Island marina and is a three-minute walk from the beach. The 227 rooms are pleasant with lots of amenities from microwaves and mini-fridges, to kitchenettes and patios in the suites. A Californian restaurant, outdoor pool, and hot tub stay lively with couples and groups of friends, though policies like kids under 17 stay for free brings its fair share of families here, too. Both breakfast and parking cost extra, which take away from the value at this mid-range property. The nearby Kona Kai Resort is a good alternative with trendy rooms, a spa, and kayak and paddleboard rentals -- but nightly rates are higher.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis
100 Carondelet Plaza

This 300-room Ritz is located in the business district of Clayton, a suburb of St. Louis located about nine miles from downtown, which guests can easily access using the MetroLink subway system. The hotel lives up to the Ritz brand's reputation, and features crystal chandeliers, marble floors, dark woods, and rich rugs in the common areas. Rooms are classically chic, featuring balconies, comfortable beds, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs with separate showers. There are three on-site restaurants, as well as a bakery, lively lounge, and cigar club. The massive fitness center features a steam room and sauna. But while the service and features don't disappoint, there is some wear and tear throughout this older property, particularly in some of guest room furnishings.

Casa Ojai Inn
1302 E Ojai Ave

The two-pearl Casa Ojai Inn is a motel that’s ideal for couples and families looking to be within walking and short driving distance to a variety of local attractions. There’s a homey vibe to this family-owned property, which offers a free hot breakfast buffet and warm chocolate chip cookies on arrival. Features include a saltwater pool, a hot tub, and bike rentals. The 46 rooms are a bit old-fashioned looking, but are spacious and have mini-fridges and Keurig coffeemakers. Some rooms suited to longer stays have small kitchenettes with microwaves. For a more atmospheric stay, travelers could check out the Emerald Iguana Inn, which has romantic gardens and in-room spa treatments.

Ridge on Sedona Golf Resort
55 Sun Ridge Cir

The lower-middle-range Sedona Ridge is just off Highway 179 in the Village of Oak Creek, with 118 rooms housed in 23 tan stucco buildings on a sprawling property. The red rocks are far from the Ridge, so views of them are limited, but good views exist of the surrounding desert landscape, especially from the two heated pools. Rooms have kitchenettes, but many guests will have to drive from the lobby to reach them. Guests wanting better views at a similar price point should consider the Bell Rock Inn.

Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center
2345 McGee St

The 730-room Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center is a huge upscale property connected to the Crown Center entertainment complex. Corporate guests and those attending on-site or nearby events are the most frequent guests, but its excellent location near attractions, restaurants, and shopping draw plenty of families and couples too. Rooms are modern, but typically Sheraton, and include flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and the brand's excellent beds. Casual Spectators Gastro-Pub keeps everyone fed, or there are multiple dining options in the Crown Center. The rooftop pool is a plus in nice weather, and the fitness center has a large selection of machines. Travelers who'd prefer something with more character could check out the historic Hotel Phillips, which is closer to the trendy Power & Light District.

Radisson Blu Minneapolis Downtown
35 S 7th St

Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, the design-savvy, 360-room Radisson Blu Minneapolis caters to business travelers with its express check-in/-out, 29,000 square feet of meeting space, and express laundry services. The huge 17th-floor gym, with views overlooking the skyline, has state-of-the-art equipment, a movement studio, locker rooms, and showers. Rooms are minimalist and modern, with a standard high-end chain appeal, while local artwork adds a more personal element. The on-site restaurant is a local favorite, serving farm-to-table cuisine to locals and guests alike. Just note there is no spa or pool, features that can be found at the Loews and Westin, respectively.

Floridays Resort
12562 International Drive

Despite a pesky resort fee, this upper-middle-range property offers a solid value, thanks in part to a long list of freebies –- including shuttle service, parking, Wi-Fi, and poolside activities. The overall vibe is tranquil, and the hotel caters to both families and business travelers with its upscale condo units (complete with fully stocked kitchens) and modern meeting spaces.

Holiday Inn Express Walnut Creek
2730 N Main St

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express Walnut Creek is a solid choice for any travelers seeking reasonable rates at a well-maintained hotel in the East Bay. It’s just off Interstate 680 and within walking distance of a BART station connecting to San Francisco and Oakland. Attractive freebies include a hot breakfast buffet, parking, Wi-Fi, and an area shuttle. It also has an outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a small, sparsely equipped fitness room. Its 164 guest rooms are clean and spacious, with microwaves, Keurig coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, but ambient noise can be heard, especially in rooms closest to the freeway. Rates are attractive for the location and the amenities offered. For something similar in a central San Francisco location, check out the Holiday Inn San Francisco-Fishermans Wharf, though rooms here are also prone to noise.

The Garland
4222 Vineland Avenue

There are 257 rooms at this three-and-a-half pearl hotel that’s set in North Hollywood's trendy Studio City. Universal Studios Hollywood is just a five-minute drive from the hotel, and there are a range of hip restaurants within walking distance as well. Rooms are spacious and bright, with a contemporary-mod design scheme plus free Wi-Fi and small balconies. Movies are screened on summer evenings at the lovely outdoor pool, and the hotel has a popular restaurant plus bars with daily happy hours. Travelers looking to be within walking distance of the Hollywood Walk of Fame should compare with the BEST WESTERN PLUS Hollywood Hills.
