Tamarack Lodge and Resort
163 Twin Lakes Road, Lake Mary Rd.

The three-pearl Tamarack Lodge and Resort is an ideal place for hiking, fishing, and boating in a remote, natural setting -- and the only resort on the shores of Twin Lakes. The property's 35 cabins range from small, rustic studios, to large, three-bedroom units with multiple decks, while the 11 guest rooms in the main lodge are basic, and some have shared bathrooms. All have fireplaces and kitchens, but no TVs. Dining here can be expensive, though the restaurant has alluring lake views and free breakfast is included. There's also a cozy lobby bar with a fireplace and live piano on weekends. Travelers looking to downhill ski should compare with the much larger Mammoth Mountain Inn, which has direct access to the slopes.

DoubleTree by Hilton Alana - Waikiki Beach
1956 Ala Moana Blvd

This three-pearl, 317-room hotel is located away from the busy beaches and mega-resorts of Waikiki. It's a 10-minute walk from Kahanamoku Beach, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Simply decorated rooms include coffeemakers and furnished lanais; some with lovely sea views. The hotel is popular with corporate travelers and has a 24-hour business center with several high-tech meeting rooms. Leisure facilities include an outdoor pool with sun loungers and a modern fitness center, but there are no spa facilities. The all-day restaurant serves American cuisine in a casual setting, plus a breakfast buffet with made-to-order eggs. Downsides include the daily resort fee and extra charges for breakfast and parking. Travelers might also like Coconut Waikiki Hotel, a quiet boutique hotel offering fresher rooms plus free breakfast and Wi-Fi.

South Seas Hotel
1751 Collins Ave

With basic but clean rooms, direct beach access, a nice pool, and an address on swank Collins Avenue, the low-key South Seas is one of the best values in SoBe -- if you can tolerate small bathrooms and a tiny gym with no air-conditioning.

The Inn at 1252 Monterey
1252 Munras Ave.

Comfort Inn Monterey by the Sea is a budget motel with a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Located a short distance from the regional airport and downtown Monterey, the property is popular for travelers looking for a pit-stop while on a Californian coastal road trip. The 67 rooms are well-maintained, and come with flat-screen TVs and tea- and- coffee-making facilities; some rooms have microwaves and mini-fridges. Features include a heated outdoor swimming pool and small, dated fitness center. There are a couple of freebies, including a full buffet breakfast, coffee throughout the day, Wi-Fi throughout the property, and on-site parking. Travelers may want to compare rates at Monterey Bay Lodge, a similarly well-maintained budget property that's only a three-minute walk from the beach.

Best Western Plus All Suites Inn
500 Ocean St

The Best Western Plus All Suites Inn is a clean and modern budget property for Santa Cruz tourists who don't mind that the boardwalk and beach are within 10 minutes by car or bicycle. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance. The 77 spacious suites feature contemporary decor and living room areas, as well as mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Free breakfast with hot and cold items is served daily. Amenities include a small fitness room and a pleasant outdoor patio with a hot tub, but no swimming pool. Parking and Wi-Fi are free. Those looking for slightly lower rates could also consider the Quality Inn Santa Cruz, which lacks a gym and business center.

Kimpton Hotel Allegro
171 W Randolph St

This 438-room Kimpton hotel is located in the heart of the Theatre District, and surrounded by the corporate offices of the Loop. Features are few (there isn't much besides the 24-hour fitness center), but the decor is bright and modern, and freebies include a nightly wine hour and in-room yoga accessories. Though some rooms are on the small side, all have modern amenities: 37-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Aveda toiletries and mini-bars. For bigger rooms and bathrooms (but fewer freebies), consider the nearby Fairmont.

Holiday Inn Express San Diego Airport - Old Town
1955 San Diego Ave

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express San Diego Airport-Old Town is conveniently located off I-5 and I-8, within a 10-minute drive of the airport, the downtown convention center, and Gaslight Quarter. It has a small fitness center and heated outdoor pool and whirlpool, and includes a hot breakfast buffet in the room rate. The 123 rooms come with microwaves, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers. Travelers might want to compare this property with the family-run Old Town Inn, which is closer to Old Town.

The Westin Pasadena
191 N Los Robles Ave

The Westin Pasadena is an upscale hotel within walking distance of the convention center and Old Pasadena. This 350-room hotel caters to business travelers and meeting groups, but leisure travelers will also find plenty of appeal in the amenities such as the spacious fitness center with saunas and steam rooms. The heated pool has sweeping city views, and the outdoor patio is a great place to dine or enjoy a drink. Rooms are clean and spacious, with mini-fridges and coffeemakers, but bathrooms are small and drab. Rates are competitive for what is a typically pricey area, but the stylish and upscale DusitD2 Hotel Constance Pasadena is a more affordable alternative.

Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center
3500 Midwest Road

There are two reasons to go to this 384-room convention hotel 35 minutes from downtown Chicago: business, and golf. The property is located directly on a golf course, and there's a big conference center for the various conventions held here throughout the year. There's not much to do in the surrounding area, so guests will need stay occupied on property with the two pools, tennis court, billiard room, quality 24-hour fitness center. Rooms are comfortable and chain-like, and have flat-screen TVs.

Inn at Pelican Bay
800 Vanderbilt Beach Rd

The Inn at Pelican Bay is a four-pearl boutique property located on a small lake in the popular golf resort town of Naples, Florida, a short free shuttle ride from the beach. The 100 rooms were renovated in 2016 and many have balconies with lakefront views. Property features include a small lake with a fountain feature, a lagoon pool with lounge chairs, and a well-equipped fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment. There's no restaurant, but the hotel does offer a breakfast buffet that -- along with Wi-Fi -- is included in the daily resort fee. Travelers looking to be right on the beach may want to consider the Edgewater Beach Hotel instead, but bear in mind that past guests have complained about worn furniture in its rooms.
