Salishan Resort
7760 N Highway 101

The Salishan Spa and Golf Resort is a four-pearl beach property that attracts golfers and spa-lovers, including plenty of Portlanders in search of a weekend break from city life. The 205 rooms are spread out across multiple buildings and have balconies or terraces with views of the forest, golf course, or Siletz Bay. However, while the facilities generally get good reviews, there have been complaints of worn furnishings in rooms. The 18-hole golf course and the spa are the star attractions here, but there's also a fitness center, indoor pool, tennis court, and five bars and restaurants. There are several hotels nearby, but none offer as extensive facilities as the Salishan.

Seattle Marriott Redmond
7401 164th Ave NE

The Redmond Marriott Town Center is attached to a popular outdoor shopping mall, and its Redmond location convenient for conferences and Microsoft/Nintendo/ATT meetings. But rooms are bland, and there are extra fees for everything (Wi-Fi, breakfast) -- unlike at its Residence Inn sister hotel a mere one-minute-walk away.

Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland
422 SW Broadway

The Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland is an upscale boutique property that reopened in 2015 after a multimillion dollar revamp resulting in fresh, hip interiors and a theme based on local wines. The downtown location puts most of the city's attractions within easy walking distance, including the waterfront and Pioneer Square. The 117 rooms are also chic and stylish, almost all with differing layouts, and some feature hot tub terraces. However, past guests have complained of street noise in lower-level rooms and many views are drab. The on-site Italian eatery is excellent, and a free nightly wine tasting is a real draw, though rates are generally on the high side. For a comparatively stylish but more affordable option (albeit with smaller rooms) check out the Hotel Lucia next door.

Hi-Lo Hotel, Autograph Collection
320 SW Stark Street

A chic, highly Instagram-able boutique property, the upscale Hi-Lo Hotel, Autograph Collection opened its doors in 2017. Housed inside Portland's historic Oregon Pioneer Building in the downtown area, the property combines industrial elements like rutted concrete walls with softly hued, mid-century-inspired decor. That contemporary, minimalist aesthetic continues into its 120 rooms and suites done up in on-trend furnishings, plus 49-inch flat-screen LED smart TVs, heated tile floors, coffeemakers with free coffee and tea, and 24-hour pillow menus. Hotel features are as well-considered as the decor: There are meeting/event spaces, an all-day lobby bar, a tiny lobby shop selling local goods, and a modern Mexican restaurant that focuses on Oaxacan flavors. By comparison, Ace Hotel Portland offers a better downtown location and slightly lower average rates, but its bathrooms are small, with external sinks, and some rooms share bathrooms.

Balch Hotel
40 Heimrich St, Columbia River Gorge

The three-and-a-half-pearl Balch Hotel is a superb small inn located in the rural community of Dufur, Oregon. The nearest major town and tourist attractions are nearly 20 minutes away by car, but it’s this isolation and quiet setting that’s the draw of a stay here. The hotel is housed in an early 20th-century building with period details and antiques, and it’s set on lush grounds with views of Mount Hood in the distance. Guests enjoy a free hot breakfast with frittatas, and the hotel also has a well-regarded restaurant and full-service spa. With their lack of TVs and phones, the 18 charming, gracious guest rooms have a “get away from it all” feel. They do offer free Wi-Fi, but some share a bathroom with other rooms. Travelers who want a more conventional hotel near the Columbia River and the freeway might consider the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn.

Best Western Inn at the Rogue
8959 Rogue River Hwy

Located in Grants Pass and a short drive north of the California/Oregon border, the Best Western Inn at the Rogue is a pleasant mid-range property with 54 rooms. Though the chain decor is generic, rooms are pleasant and some of the suites come with extras like in-room hot tubs or wet bars. There are plenty of features for a hotel of this size, including an outdoor pool, hot tub, tiny fitness center, and a free breakfast with hot and cold items. Those looking for something with a bit more charm may prefer the nearby Lodge at the Riverside, which is located on the other side of the river and features perks like free evening wine and cheese receptions.

Lanai at the Cove
3140 Sunset Blvd

High on value and low on frills, the mid-range Lanai at the Cove is a good choice for vacationers looking to get away from it all. The oceanfront location two miles from the center of bustling Seaside requires a car but gives immediate access to a rocky beach popular with surfers. Rooms are individually owned and decorated, and some are pet-friendly, so inquiring about the specific room prior to booking is essential. Each room has a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave, those that face the ocean include private balconies. An outdoor heated pool is a nice perk for this price range.

Hyatt Place Portland Airport / Cascade Station
9750 NE Cascades Pkwy

The 136-room Hyatt Place Portland Airport/Cascade Station is one of the newer places to stay near Portland International Airport. This mid-range business property is located in a development that looks like an upscale strip mall. It's a short walk to restaurants, shopping, and public transportation but is a bit far from Portland's most popular attractions. Rooms are spacious and have living/work areas with sofa beds, but bathrooms are small. A free hot breakfast is included in the room rate, and there's also a pool that's long enough for laps, a 24-hour fitness center, a small business center with computer stations, and meeting rooms. Travelers might also want to check out the nearby Radisson, another mid-range property with similar facilities and rates.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Seaside-Convention Center
34 N Holladay Dr

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Seaside Convention Center is a solid choice for families and even business travelers visiting the picturesque coastal town of Seaside. Situated on the Necanicum River, it’s a short walk from the ocean, downtown, and the convention center. Highlights include free hot breakfast, a 24-hour fitness center, whirlpool, and sauna, and free parking and Wi-Fi throughout. Its 79 guest rooms are spacious and well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, and mini-fridges, and many have balconies with river views. Rates frequently spike quite high on peak weekends, and it's pricey given what's offered. For a stay that's directly on the beach and also has free breakfast, check out Ebb Tide Oceanfront Inn.

Garibaldi House Inn & Suites
502 Garibaldi Ave

The 50-room Garibaldi House Inn & Suites operates like a very large bed-and-breakfast, adding homey touches that give the property a personal touch. Located about five minutes from picturesque Rockaway Beach -- the area's major draw for the beautiful coastal landscape -- and 55 miles from the busier Astoria, the hotel is a good choice as a home base for exploring this region of the Oregon Coast. Free Wi-Fi, an indoor pool, and an extensive breakfast are some of the perks that makes this three-pearl property a great value, but rooms are dated and could use updates.
