Hampton Inn Manhattan-Times Square North
220 West 41st Street Manhattan New York 7203

This Hampton Inn has a convenient Midtown West location that is slightly removed from the hubbub of Times Square (just to the south). Rooms are clean and modern, with flat-screen TVs, Nintendo consoles, and either one king or two queen-size beds. Numerous freebies (breakfast, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee) add value, but guests should still expect to pay a premium for location. The breakfast room is large, but it can still get crowded -- as can the lobby area.

The Maxwell New York City
541 Lexington Avenue Manhattan New York 7503

Business and leisure travelers craving style and a social scene will enjoy the colorful, 693-room The Maxwell New York City (formerly W New York) amidst Midtown East’s gray business hotels. Cutesy language and small, mood-lit rooms are not for everyone, but a popular bar scene and comfortable beds seem to justify the steep rates.

Pod 39 Hotel
145 E 39th Street Between 3rd Ave & Lexington Ave

The idea of the 366-room Pod 39 hotel is to offer very small rooms (even by New York City standards, a city notorious for small hotels rooms) for low prices (again, by New York City standards). Rooms range from 55 to 140 square feet, and prices start at $119 per night. The smallest rooms, or pods, only fit one person, but all have private bathrooms and smart design touches, like storage under the bed, train-inspired coat hooks, double flat-screen TVs for guests in bunk beds, and both outlets and a "cell phone" close to the pillows. There are three seriously cool -- and colorful -- public spaces: an upscale Mexican restaurant, a rooftop bar with unique architecture, and a hangout space called the Playroom. The hotel keeps prices low by cutting back on amenities and services, but it's a great option for anyone who wants a low price tag without sacrificing cleanliness, comfort, and style.

Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan/Fifth Avenue

This 92-room Fairfield Inn in Midtown is cleaner and more contemporary than one may expect from a mid-range chain, and offers a free morning breakfast buffet, a free 24-hour coffee station, and a computer station. There are no other features, and guests should expect to pay a premium for location during the week when the hotel is busy with business travelers -- but rates can be half the price on weekends. Popular sights such as the Empire State Building, New York Public Library, and Times Square are within walking distance, but the more upscale Strand hotel next door is sometimes cheaper and luxury options can be found in the same price range downtown.

citizenM New York Times Square

The upper-middle-range citizenM New York Times Square is an ultra-modern, funky property in the Theater District, about a five-minute walk from Times Square. From the self-check-in, airport-style kiosks to its spacious, living room-like lobby filled with colorful knickknacks and whimsical art, citizenM rejects typical hotel trappings -- in their words, there are "absolutely no trouser presses, bellboys, or other tired old hotel cliches." The lobby restaurant/bar is open 24/7 and serves barista-brewed coffee. The rooftop bar on the 21st floor offers spectacular skyline views and covered outdoor seating. Rooms, with storage units underneath the beds, are compact and functional, yet still quirky and colorful, outfitted with mini-fridges, but bathrooms are cramped. Those looking for a more traditional option could try the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, which has spacious rooms with microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, at comparable rates.

Paramount Hotel New York

Since its 1928 official grand opening, this architectural hotel landmark in French Renaissance style has undergone many changes. Past designers have included Ian Schrager and Philipe Starck, and interior designer Meyer Davis -- the man behind such NYC hotels and restaurants as The Nolitan and Locanda Verde. Stylish rooms (some really tiny, even by New York standards) have modern furnishings and quality linens, but lack counter space. And be prepared to spend for Wi-Fi -- for every device.

Martinique New York on Broadway, Curio Collection by Hilton

This gorgeous historic building often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle of Herald Square, but with modern rooms, several dining options, and an interesting history (it’s the birthplace of the Professional Golfers Association), the Radisson is a solid mid-range option. The location may not be particularly attractive, but it is certainly convenient; the hotel sits right above eight subway lines, and is within walking distance of numerous sights. It’s worth comparing rates with the nearby Eventi, however, which boasts larger rooms and extra freebies.

Wyndham Garden Chinatown

The Wyndham Garden Chinatown is a modern mid-range chain hotel in the heart of bustling Chinatown. Though the hotel is a trek from traditional sights in midtown, it's within easy walking distance of trendy bars and restaurants in Chinatown and on the Lower East Side. Its 106 guest rooms are small but contemporary, and some come with outdoor terraces that look out onto the city.

The Ludlow New York City
180 Ludlow St

The Ludlow New York City is one of the few upscale boutique hotels in the Lower East Side. And much like the surrounding neighborhood, the hotel is hip, artistically inclined, and (unless you splurge on a Loft or Terrace) cramped. The 175 guest rooms have an industrial-chic aesthetic and include Tivoli radios, feather duvets, and copper bathroom fixtures. Some rooms have soaking tubs and sprawling terraces. Downstairs, the scene at Dirty French is more about being seen among the Avant Garde designed dining room than it is about food quality. The adjacent Lobby Bar offers a cozy lounge area in front of a crackling fireplace, and spills out onto a stunning garden courtyard. Other than a furnished terrace and small fitness center on the 20th floor, there's little else at the hotel. For lower rates and larger rooms, the artsy Hotel Indigo Lower East Side is right across the street.

Fifty Hotel & Suites by Affinia

Fifty NYC–an Affinia hotel is a 251-room, upscale boutique hotel with art-driven contemporary style that showcases local artists. The hotel's Midtown East location makes it convenient for both business travelers and tourists while its big, apartment-like rooms and suites (some with kitchenettes) are great for families and visitors on extended stays. Boutique extras include a wine hour, free Wi-Fi, and pet-friendly policies, but there's no full restaurant (just a continental breakfast, for a fee). Prices are competitive for this caliber, especially given the location and the size of the rooms, though guests may also want to consider The Lexington New York City
