The Kitano Hotel New York
66 Park Ave East 38th Street

Located on an especially quiet, residential strip of snazzy Park Avenue in Murray Hill, the Japanese-owned, 149-room Kitano's appeal is in the details -- in-room towel warmers, soundproof windows, heated toilet seats, and impeccable service. It's a fine hotel, but for the price it's also worth considering the nearby IBEROSTAR 70 Park Avenue and The Court hotels.

The Gotham Hotel
16 E 46th Street Between Fifth Ave and Madison Ave

The Gotham, one of Manhattan’s skinniest hotels, opened its doors in 2009 in the same spot that was once endearingly known as the Gotham Book Mart. The 66-room boutique pays homage to its former tenant through the name, of course, but also through the sophisticated decor. The cheerful lobby has a welcoming feel -- even more so when guests are offered a glass of wine from one of the trendily dressed staff members (no uniforms here). Every room comes with a balcony or patio, and guests enjoy free Wi-Fi and use of the neighborhood sports club.

1 Hotel Central Park
1414 Avenue of the Americas

The 229-room 1 Hotel Central Park is a luxurious property with an eco-conscious design and excellent location a block from the south entrance of its namesake park and within a five-minute walk of several subway lines. Stunning rooms have a nature-meets-city look, with reclaimed wood, green succulents, and brick accents. Quality in-room amenities include yoga mats that can be taken outside, Nespresso machines, and free Wi-Fi, plus some have lovely window seats and deep tubs. The all-day restaurant serves seasonal fare, plus there are a fitness center, meeting and lounge spaces, and a lobby farm stand where guests can grab free fruit. On the downside, there's no spa on-site, and some guests have complained of street noise. If a spa is important, consider the historic Hotel Plaza Athenee, though its design is more classically sumptuous than modern.

Le Meridien New York, Central Park

The Viceroy Central Park New York is a luxury hotel with 240 rooms centrally located in Midtown, just two blocks from the bottom of Central Park. Rooms have modern amenities like Beats by Dr. Dre sound systems, Smart TVs, and Illy espresso-makers. The hotel has a restaurant and bar in the lobby, a rooftop bar with Central Park views, and a 24-hour fitness center in addition to a concierge and other upscale services. But extras like breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi aren't included in all room rates and can be pricey. Still, the Viceroy is a good value for its location and pearl level -- some comparable properties can cost more than double (we're looking at you, Ritz-Carlton) -- but travelers could compare rates with the nearby JW Marriott Essex House, which features dramatic Art Deco decor in its lobby.

The Knickerbocker Hotel
6 Times Square SE Corner Of 42nd St & Broadway

The Knickerbocker is a polished hotel right in Times Square. Reopened in 2015, this sleek, hip property has 330 spacious, but not overly luxurious, rooms. Stand-out features include a coffee bar, a popular rooftop terrace with great views, a high-end restaurant headed by celebrity chef Charlie Palmer, and an excellent fitness center, but there's no pool or full spa (in-room treatments can be arranged). Travelers set on a spa to complete their luxury experience may prefer Westin New York at Times Square.

The Gallivant Times Square

The Gallivant Times Square has some of the lowest rates in Times Square. Rooms and suites have modern furnishings with flat-screen TVs and New York-inspired wall decor. Perks include a small fitness center, bar, and free Wi-Fi. Lower-level rooms often experience street noise.

The Plaza
Fifth Avenue at Central Park South

The century-old, 282-room Plaza is a New York landmark. A $400 million overhaul in 2008 gave the huge rooms gold-plated bathrooms with showers and tubs, but it also converted most rooms overlooking Central Park into privately owned residences. Still, the exceptional spa, 24-hour butler service, and history make it worth the splurge. Additionally, excellent dining and drinking options include the iconic Palm Court with Eloise-themed tea time, a Food Hall with array of counter-style eats, and a Champagne Bar. For a similar experience that’s less expensive, consider The Pierre, A Taj Hotel.

Gramercy Park Hotel
201 East 24th Street Manhattan New York

The Gramercy Park Hotel currently sets the bar for New York cool -- hence the celebrities in the lounge and the paparazzi on the sidewalk. It offers ultra-luxe but small rooms done up in high Boho-chic style, a gorgeous gym, an acclaimed Italian trattoria, and a great rooftop bar. True, even guests sometimes feel excluded from the glamour-fest in the bar. But the place is utterly unique.

Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan

The massive upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza is primarily a business hotel, yet its proximity to Times Square brings a good amount of families and tourists into the mix. Its 770 rooms are spacious, and many of them (especially those on higher levels) have great city views. On the downside, decor is predictably generic, and rooms also show some wear. On-site facilities include a lively lobby lounge bar (with daily happy hours) and a full restaurant, plus guests can access a sprawling separately owned gym with a lap pool. The Crowne Plaza is a convenient, comfortable home base in the heart of Times Square. Still, those seeking something with a bit more polish and style might prefer The Time

The New Yorker a Wyndham Hotel

The nice bright rooms, convenient location (next to Penn Station, 10 blocks from Times Square), and rich history make the 912-room Wyndham New Yorker a reasonable pick for the price. A well-equipped gym, two restaurants, and free Wi-Fi add to its value, but note that there's a daily facility fee.
