Novotel New York Times Square
226 West 52nd Street Manhattan New York

The Novotel New York Times Square is an upper-middle-range hotel with stunning views and a prime Midtown location near theaters and all manner of NYC attractions. All rooms have a sleek design with soft white bedding, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges, though bathrooms can be dark. While this 480-room hotel may feel too busy for some, the broad public spaces covering an outdoor terrace, lobby, bar and restaurant on the main floor gives guests ample breathing room -- not to mention panoramic views of the Broadway area. Its restaurant and bar, Supernova, serves elevated comfort food and modern cocktails, and an on-site fitness center with modern machines rounds out the offerings. All in all, the Novotel represents a good value, particularly for its rates. As an alternative, the similarly priced Paramount Hotel is even closer to Times Square, but lacks the views.

The Empire Hotel

This 422-room hotel's proximity to Central Park, sultry atmosphere, and rooftop bar and pool make it an attractive option on the Upper West Side. Rooms, while warmly decorated in deep earth tones, are quite small, and come with a slew of extra fees, like charges for Wi-Fi and use of Keurig coffeemakers. Scenesters who want to be closer to the action of Downtown could look into Gramercy Park Hotel, another historic hot spot with a rooftop bar.

W New York Downtown
8 Albany Street Manhattan New York

When it opened in 2010, this W hotel brought the suit-focused Financial District with a dose of cool. It's a sleek hotel, and its biggest assets are its stylish lobby lounge (with huge wrap-around terrace) and its proximity to Ground Zero (which means perfect views of the Freedom Tower). Other features include a nice fitness center (with great views), a small business center, meeting rooms, and a restaurant by the well-regarded BLT chain. Many tourists would prefer to be in a hipper, quainter, or more central neighborhood, but the hotel is close to Wall Street, Trinity Church, Battery Park, the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and of course the 9/11 Memorial. Travelers who like the idea of a hip hotel in the Financial District can also consider Gild Hall, about a 10-minute walk to the east.

Hilton Garden Inn New York/Tribeca

This modern Hilton Garden Inn delivers on all the brand hallmarks (free coffee and tea in the lobby, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour Pavilion Pantry) - and then some. There's an on-site restaurant, AOA Bar & Grill, serving breakfast and dinner, and the A, C, E subway line, offering easy access to Times Square, Wall Street, and other popular sights, is literally right out the front door. Rooms are clean and functional, though some face an unappealing interior courtyard.

Hampton Inn Manhattan Madison Square Garden Area

While the Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden has all the chain-hotel essentials -- free Wi-Fi; free breakfast; 24-hour fitness center; big, clean, comfortable beds -- being next to the Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and Lincoln Tunnel traffic isn't ideal. Still, it's a well-priced home base for exploring the city's major attractions -- not its trendy bars and restaurants.

The Wall Street Inn

The 46-room Wall Street Inn is a mid-range hotel situated in near the New York Stock Exchange, major attractions, and several subway lines in Lower Manhattan. Its rooms are decorated in an early American style that many consider quaint, but others may see as old-fashioned, with amenities including flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. A free continental breakfast is served daily, but only pastries, tea, and coffee are available during the rest of the day. A local restaurant does provide room service. Two meeting rooms and a business center are convenient, and there's a basic fitness center as well. Travelers looking for something a little more modern in the area could check out the Holiday Inn New York City - Wall Street, which has an on-site restaurant and bar.

Four Points by Sheraton Midtown - Times Square

All the essential comforts -- comfy beds, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour gym -- make this 250-room Four Points a good choice near Times Square (though its location on a desolate-feeling street makes it a not-great choice). TRYP by Wyndham New York Times Square has similar features, but is located on a livelier block.

Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown
11 West 37th Street Manhattan New York

A free breakfast buffet with hot items, impressively big rooms, and a small fitness center make the 92-room Wingate a great choice in the Garment District (the hotel is a 10-minute walk from Times Square and the Empire State Building). The rates here are often less than the ones (for smaller rooms) at competing hotels, but it's worth checking out the nearby Radisson Martinique on Broadway, which has more on-site dining options.

The Westin New York at Times Square

This bustling, eco-friendly Westin -- thoroughly renovated between 2013 and 2015 -- comes with a prime Times Square location, ample meeting space, a restaurant and a bar, and a 24-hour room service menu that has options for kids. Its 873 rooms start at 300 square feet, and feature Westin's famously comfortable beds, 47-inch flat-screen TVs, bathrobes, and coffeemakers, but lack Wi-Fi. For a Times Square business-friendly hotel with free in-room Wi-Fi, check out the Hyatt Times Square New York.

The Amsterdam Inn
340 Amsterdam Ave at 76th Street

The Amsterdam Inn has an excellent location -- in the heart of the beautiful Upper West Side, just minutes from Central Park and two blocks from the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History -- but little else. Its 28 rooms are small, worn and slightly dirty, with outdated TVs and (in some rooms) a shared bathroom.
