The Langham New York Fifth Avenue

The Langham Place Fifth Avenue is a modern luxury hotel conveniently located a four-minute walk from the Empire State Building and three blocks from Bryant Park. Some of the 234 spacious and minimalist rooms come with kitchens and laundry machines, making this an appealing choice for business travelers and families. Michelin-star Ai Fiori restaurant provides a distinct Riviera setting and Italian and French cuisine. Some of the 7,500 square feet of flexible meetings, events, and weddings spaces feature skyline or Empire State Building views. Chuan Body + Soul includes a modern fitness center and a Himalayan salt sauna. Just about the only downside is how simply the rooms are decorated. For a more striking design and an indoor pool, consider the nearby Chatwal, A Luxury Collection Hotel, New York

Residence Inn New York Manhattan/Times Square
1033 Avenue of the Americas

With kitchenettes in every room and a substantial free breakfast buffet, the Residence Inn New York Manhattan/Times Square offers families on vacation and long-term guests a good value and a central location. It’s set a block from Bryant Park, easy walking distance to Times Square and the Theater District, multiple subway lines, and casual eateries. The 357 studios and suites are a bit drab in terms of decor, but they all have kitchenettes, sofa beds, dining tables, and free Wi-Fi. An on-site market sells snacks and alcoholic beverages and a dinner-only restaurant serves American food. A modest gym, a business center, and coin-operated laundry machines are available. Travelers wanting to be closer to Central Park should check out the Residence Inn located a five-minute walk from there.

Casamia 36 Hotel

While certainly small, the 36 Hudson Hotel doesn't have quite enough character to qualify as a boutique property. It's in a slightly less central part of Midtown West, but within walking distance of the Javits Convention Center and Hells Kitchen. The 39 rooms are reasonably modern, with amenities including free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and coffeemakers, though most are small to the point of feeling cramped; there's also nothing at all at the hotel besides the lobby and the guest rooms. It's a decent value for the area, but for a Midtown hotel with more features, consider the similarly priced TRYP New York City Times Square South or Paramount Hotel.

Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC
18 Ninth Avenue At 13th Street

This 187-room Meatpacking District hotel is more than its lauded rooftop pool -- guests also score luxe 400-thread-count bedding and cool Cutler toiletries, plus free Wiis, HBO, and Wi-Fi. The nightly parade of clubhoppers outside the door can grow tiresome -- but if that's your scene, the proximity to so many excellent restaurants and bars is hard to beat.

The Standard, East Village

The Standard, East Village is one of the hottest properties in the newly hip Bowery area of Manhattan's East Village. The hotel's crown jewel may be the fact that is it home to one of the city's most sought-after restaurants, Narcissa, but great city views, a lovely garden for cocktails, and freebies such as Wi-Fi and bicycle rentals are all pluses. Rooms, albeit sleek with brand-new everything, are small -- even by New York standards -- and the hotel has few on-site amenities; there is no spa or fitness center, but guests do get free access to the Crunch gym across the street. Rates here are often less expensive than the similarly hip Bowery Hotel a couple blocks south.

U Hotel Fifth Avenue

Hotel 373 doesn't offer much -- no gym, no restaurant, no business center, not even much of a lobby -- and its 70 rooms have barely enough space for the bed (in the case of the standard rooms, that's only a full-size bed). In Murray Hill, there are better, equally well-located hotels for the price, like the Affinia Dumont.

Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan Times Square

This mid-range hotel offers a range of extras that make it a solid value, including free Wi-Fi and free breakfast (the only hot items, however, are heat-and-eat egg sandwiches). The indoor/outdoor rooftop bar, which is particularly popular during the summer, boasts views of the Hudson. Contemporary rooms feature spacious work desks, large flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. There is a fitness center, though it's small and lacks weight-training machines, and the Midtown West location is within walking distance of Times Square -- but the street is gritty. All in all, it offers decent value for the area, but it may be worth comparing rates with the TRYP New York City Times Square South, which is more upscale but often similarly priced.

Crowne Plaza HY36 Midtown Manhattan

The 2017-opened Crowne Plaza H36 Midtown Manhattan is a contemporary, upper-middle-range property with a great location near Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and multiple subway lines. The 251 rooms are decently sized and outfitted with comfy beds, ample charging ports, mini-fridges, and showers. Some minor outside noise can be heard, though there are designated quiet floors. A street-side restaurant and bar serves tasty American fare, and room service is available during select hours. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi, meeting spaces, and a small but well-equipped fitness center with treadmills, Peloton bikes, and free weights. The busy surrounding area with ongoing construction may be a bit hectic for some, though it's convenient for both business and leisure travelers. For something with a bit more charm, consider the 48-room Casablanca Hotel, which provides free breakfast.

NoMo SoHo Hotel
9 Crosby Street

Opened in February 2011, this stylish 270-room hotel is located right on the southern border of chic SoHo. NoMo is a combination of "nostalgic" and "modern" and the hotel aims to have an aesthetic that unites the two. It has small, beautiful rooms with white-and-blue decor, high-tech amenities -- like large flat-screen TVs and iPads -- and floor-to-ceiling windows, many with jaw-dropping views. The fitness center, though small and in the basement, has state-of-the-art machines with personal screens and headphones. There's an on-site restaurant and bar in a pretty conservatory space with windowed ceilings.

Club Quarters Hotel, opposite Rockefeller Center

The 203-room Manhattan Centre Hotel is the slightly older sister property to the Jewel Hotel a few doors down. Like its neighbor, the hotel's biggest draw is its prime Midtown location, across the street from Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. Rooms tend to be a bit dark, but are but clean and modern, with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. A small but modern fitness center, free Wi-Fi, and access to the members-only Terrace Club help make this a good value.
