The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery Collection
Jl. Jenderal Sudirman no. 9

The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - MGallery Collection is a historic luxury hotel saturated with Old World charm. It's well-located just a 10-minute walk from bustling Malioboro Street. This huge property has the space for tons of features such as an elegant outdoor courtyard with a swimming pool, two big bar and lounge spaces, and an on-site restaurant. There's also a gym and a spa with a sauna and treatment rooms as well as a business center, conference rooms, and a souvenir shop. Its 144 rooms feature traditional decor and Eastern details, like carved wall art or ceramic tea sets, plus modern amenities (minibars and rainfall showers). Service is luxury-level and includes concierge, turndown, and 24-hour room service. Another option to consider could be Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta — it's less intimate but has a larger pool.

Villa Karang Hotel and Spa
West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

The 28-room Villa Karang Hotel is a mid-range property situated on a scenic beach, about a five-minute walk from Gili Air's ferry terminal. It's secluded and quiet, ideal for travelers seeking a true island getaway. Rooms range from simple entry-level options to better upgraded options with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, kettles for tea and coffee, mini-fridges, and open-air showers. All have balconies, free (spotty) Wi-Fi, or terraces and hot water. The open-air restaurant overlooking the beach serves all meals, including a free breakfast buffet, and generally gets good reviews. Spa services and diving are available on-site, and the outdoor pool is lovely. Travelers looking to save on rates could check out the 7SEAS Cottages, which also offers a variety of room choices though feels a bit more downmarket.

This upper-middle-range resort is located on the southeast end of the Gili Trawangan island, a short walk from restaurants and bars, but not in the thick of the action. Its location across a path from the beach is a major selling point, as are extensive and well-maintained grounds featuring two outdoor pools with swim-up bars, a spa, and restaurant that serves free buffet breakfasts. The 178 attractive lumbungs (Lombok’s traditional A-frame cottages) and villas feature flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and terraces, plus some add bathtubs and private pools. Wi-Fi is free but can be spotty. Also note that past guests have complained of noise and maintenance issues. Travelers may want to compare rates at the Trawangan Resort, a more intimate beachfront property in the same area.

Scallywags Smugglers Hideaway
Gili Air, West Nusa Tenggara 83352, Indonesia

The Scallywags Smugglers Hideaway is a stylish four-pearl option on the southeast coast of Gili Air. The 10 modern rooms have secluded walled courtyards, and some have gorgeous semi-outdoor bathrooms, but they’re an 11-minute walk from the main beach club and restaurant. Guests have access to a pair of small but beautiful pools, or can rent the separate self-contained villa with a private pool. The free breakfast buffet offers a good variety, and the all-day local and international menu is extensive. There’s also a full spa, a diving center, and free bikes to borrow. Wi-Fi is free, too, but the signal can be patchy. Rates are super low at Scallywags Smugglers Hideaway, but for a larger pool and slightly cheaper rates, try the Villa Karang Hotel.
