Villa Awang Awang
Jalan Melayang, Melayang Village

Villa Awang Awang is a boutique property in the thick jungles outside of central Ubud. Its five villas, built of stone, teak, and terra-cotta tiles by local craftsmen, each have kitchenettes and private infinity pools. Apart from a free breakfast the hotel has limited services and facilities, with no full restaurant or spa, though meals and massages can be pre-arranged. The romantic seclusion is popular with couples and honeymooners, but the larger four- and five-bedroom villas can accommodate families and groups of friends too. Guests looking for a similar vibe but more amenities should compare rates with the nearby The Kayon Resort, though some will prefer the intimacy and privacy found here.

Tanah Merah Art Resort
Jl. Melayang

The 15-room Tanah Merah Resort and Gallery is a wonderfully eclectic and eccentric complex in the Melayang village, a 15-minute drive from Ubud that draws most of its charm and color from its Danish designer and owner. Individually styled villas, cottages, and studios in this four-pearl property are full of character with striking art objects and a generous splash of color as well as genuine antiques and good amenities including flat-screen TVs; some have private plunge pools. Two lovely pools and stunning valley views are also a real draw, although a shortage of shade might be a problem for some. The location too might feel a little far from Ubud, but for a secluded jungle resort with more personality than most -- and at reasonable rates -- this place is definitely worth considering.

The Samaya Bali Ubud
Banjar Baung, Desa Sayan

The luxurious Samaya Ubud is a peaceful, understated property along the Ayung River, about 15 minutes outside of Ubud proper. The hotel's 19 villas have one, two, or three bedrooms and come with their own private plunge pools and gardens. There are two restaurants on-site, in addition to a selection of romantic private dining options available for booking, such as candlelit dinners by the river. Beauty and body treatments are offered at the spa or can be booked in-room, and there's also a fitness center and small pool, though it's not used frequently as all villas have lovely private pools. The hotel offers a variety of activities (for an extra charge) including cooking classes, nature walks, and other excursions, but they can get pricey. The nearby Four Seasons Resort Bali At Sayan has more extensive spa facilities and stylish suites and villas, but rates are often more expensive.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
Jalan Raya Sayan Kecamatan Ubud, Sayan, Ubud 80571 Indonesia
WakaGangga
Jl. Pantai Yeh Gangga, Desa Sudimara

WakaGangga is a four-and-a-half pearl luxury resort overlooking the black sands of Yeh Gangga Beach and the Indian Ocean. The resort is 45 minutes from the action in Seminyak by car, but travelers coming here are searching for a relaxing setting away from the hubbub. All 27 villas are spacious and sharp, with wood and stone details, large furnished terraces, iPod docks, and flat-screen TVs. Some have private plunge pools. The resort also has a 20-meter outdoor pool, a rustic-chic spa, simple fitness room, and ocean-facing restaurant and bar. There's even shuttle service into Seminyak for those looking to party. While the WakaGangga isn't as big and doesn't have the facilities of the Pan Pacific Nirwana down the coast, it's more intimate and romantic.

Soori Bali
Banjar Dukuh, Desa Kelating, Kerambitan

The Soori Bali is a luxurious beachfront resort set on lush grounds surrounded by rice paddies. Features include two restaurants, a volcanic-sand beach, a beautiful spa, and a stunning infinity-edge pool overlooking the sea -- though all of the hotel’s 48 villas have private pools of their own. Villas are spacious, ranging from one-bedroom units to a lavish 10-bedroom estate complete with private gym, spa, chauffeur services, and more. Each is equipped with an array of modern amenities such as Apple TVs, Nespresso machines, and free Wi-Fi, as well as luxurious bathrooms with deep tubs and rainfall showers. As with most five-pearl hotels, rates are high, and the peaceful, secluded location might not suit everyone. Travelers might also want to check out the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort, which has an 18-hole golf course.

Furama Villas & Spa Ubud
Jl. Raya Mambal, Banjar Bindu

If you want to get away from it all, three-pearl Furama Villas & Spa Ubud just might be the spot for you. It's a 25-minute drive from the center of Ubud, tucked amid rolling greenery, and has a hushed, secluded ambience. The 24 villas are private and classic, with details like canopy beds and antique-style furniture, plus outdoor living rooms, private pools, and massive bathrooms. They do look a bit dated and tired, and we spotted some tube TVs during our visit, so upgrades might be due. The small spa has four treatment rooms, and a scheduled shuttle runs into Ubud five times daily. Travelers who'd prefer to be closer to central Ubud might consider KajaNe Mua Private Villa & Mansion instead -- the villas there are a bit nicer.

Fivelements Retreat Bali
Puri Ahimsa, Banjar Baturning

Set on lush tropical grounds, Fivelements Puri Ahimsa Retreat is a holistic, upscale wellness getaway with nine villas on the Ayung River in Mambal village, about a 20-minute drive from central Ubud. The hotel has a large free-form pool, therapy pool, Balinese spa, herbal remedies laboratory, and vegetarian restaurant that gets rave reviews. Constructed in bamboo, the spacious villas are breezy and rustic, with river-facing terraces, free Wi-Fi, stereos with iPod docks, and bathrooms with outdoor soaking tubs and showers. For a simpler, less pricey option with an eco-friendly commitment, travelers should consider Swasti Eco Cottages, which is a five-minute walk from the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, though it lacks Fivelements' wellness programs.

Floating Leaf Eco-Luxury Retreat
Jl. Pantai Purnama 42

The four-pearl Floating Leaf Eco-Luxury Retreat is a secluded wellness resort located in a traditional Balinese village on the island’s east coast. The eco-friendly property caters to leisure travelers, as well as organized groups participating in on-site yoga and meditation. The peaceful property offers a host of facilities including a spa, open-air Yoga Sanctuary, healthy restaurant that serves organic produce grown in the garden, and a pool with in-water hammocks. The 10 modern, attractive rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and furnished outdoor spaces. Some feature a striking circular design, and views of the ocean and Mount Agung. Note that the property is a 15-minute walk from the beach and the restaurant doesn't serve beef or pork (there are no other dining options within walking distance). The Swasti Eco Cottages offers a similar experience in Ubud at a lower rate.

Santi Mandala
Br Bucuan Batuan

Santi Mandala is an upscale countryside resort in Sukawati, about 20 minutes by car or free resort shuttle from central Ubud. Situated on lush tropical grounds, the Santi has lots of rustic Balinese charm and features a large free-form pool, full-service spa, sauna, several hot tubs, yoga classes, and a restaurant. The 27 spacious villas are exactly what many visitors have in mind when coming to Bali, with vaulted bamboo ceilings, balconies or terraces, and modern features like free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Some have private swimming pools or open-air soaking tubs and showers. There's not much in the immediate area, though that's a draw for many, and travelers wanting to be closer to Ubud's artsy action should consider Ubud Raya, which has similar rates.
