Kamuela Villas and Suite Sanur
Jl. Cemara No. 33

Located in the center of Sanur, within a five-minute walk of restaurants and the beach, the 19-room Kamuela Sanur is upscale and serene. Large, stylish suites have free Wi-Fi, LCD TVs, and outdoor hot tubs, while villas feature between one and three rooms, private plunge pools, and outdoor living areas with kitchenettes. Some furniture, though, is showing wear and tear. The pool is a pleasant spot, complete with about a dozen loungers and waiter service, and there is free shuttle service to the beach, where the hotel has a few chairs and umbrellas that guests can use free of charge. The restaurant is popular with guests and non-guests alike, and serves tasty international cuisine in a charming greenhouse with sidewalk seating. The hotel’s peaceful atmosphere is great for couples, but families may prefer the more lively Sanur Paradise Plaza Suites.

Tandjung Sari Hotel
Jln. Danau Tamblingan No. 41

Opened in 1967, the three-and-a-half-pearl Tandjung Sari is one of Bali's first boutique hotels, but its 28 traditional bungalows are pleasantly modern. Each bungalow has polished wood interiors, traditional Balinese decor, and its own private garden, plus modern amenities like air-conditioning and minibars. Special touches like a mosquito canopy and complimentary cotton nightshirts and sarongs add a nice bit of character. The hotel is on the beach, and has a small pool that overlooks the sand, plus a restaurant serving international and Balinese cuisine. There's also a modern fitness room and a gift shop. For a cheaper alternative with beach access, the Sudamala Suites & Villas additionally offers a full-service spa and far more modern rooms at the southern end of Sanur.

Parigata Resort & Spa
Jln. Danau Tamblingan No. 87, Batu Jimbar

Garden-filled grounds and easy beach proximity make Parigata Resort & Spa a decent budget option, but interiors throughout are old and dated. The 43 rooms include Family Rooms that can fit up to five people, and all feature air-conditioning, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and furnished balconies or terraces. There's a restaurant and two bars, and the hotel puts on themed nights in high season. The pool is lovely and makes a lively centerpiece for the hotel -- families were splashing around during our visit. Treatments and massages are available at the small spa, and a free one-way shuttle is available within Sanur. Travelers who'd like something more modern might opt for wallet-friendly Taksu Sanur, though it's farther from the beach in the southern part of town.

Kayumanis Sanur Private Villa & Spa
Jl. Tirta Akasa 28

There aren't too many high-end villa options in Sanur, though Kayamunis makes a convincing argument for sacrificing beach proximity for upscale digs. With only 11 villas on the grounds, this is an intimate, quiet escape that works for romantic couples and families alike. All villas come with private pools, outdoor living areas, separate bedrooms with private bathrooms, and butlers that are shared with other units. Keep in mind that some villas are more modern than others. The garden- and tree-clad grounds hold a lovely restaurant that serves authentic Indonesian fare, as well as a tranquil spa. A free on-call shuttle runs to Sanur and the beach club, which is a blessing because Kayamunis isn't within walking distance of either. For something closer to the buzz, opt for Mahagiri Villas instead.

Atta kaMAYA Resort and Villas
Jl. Tanjung 41, Sanur Kauh

The three-pearl Kamaya Resort and Villas is a gorgeous, intimate boutique packed with authentic Balinese charm. It features 14 rooms and villas housed in stand-alone thatched cottages tucked amid lush gardens, many with private pools, and others providing outdoor bathrooms with sunken tubs. All have air-conditioning and minibars, but maintenance is lacking in most, and Wi-Fi is generally spotty. Designed like an ancient Balinese bath, the pool is lovely and peaceful, as is the spa. The restaurant serves a small but tasty breakfast, as well as Asian cuisine for lunch and dinner. The hotel offers free shuttle service on request to Sanur and the beach, but its location away from the city center may not be ideal for those looking to explore the area on foot. Travelers on a tighter budget may want to compare rates at Puri Mesari.

Maya Sanur Resort and Spa
Jl. Danau Tamblingan

The Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is a 103-room boutique hotel that's one of the most chic options in town. From its environmentally friendly ethos to its eye-catching art and contemporary style, this luxury hotel is refined but light-hearted. Rooms are tricked out with everything from free Wi-Fi and luxe soaking tubs to private infinity pools and espresso machines in the suites. There are three dining options, including an excellent Japanese restaurant, and the gorgeous spa makes unwinding a delight. Happy hours at Tree Bar, overlooking the beach, are a popular go-to spot for travelers from across Sanur, and there are multiple pools. If you prefer a more traditional take on luxury, it's worth considering the Fairmont Sanur down the coast instead, though rates there will be higher.

Tamukami Hotel
Jln. Danau Tamblingan 64X, Denpasar - Bali

The three-pearl Tamukami Hotel is a welcome surprise in Sanur because it does traditional style without looking old and dated. Tucked down a long driveway off of Sanur's main drag, this quiet and compact property is set in Balinese-style buildings around a lovely central pool. Balinese carvings are everywhere, and the charming outdoor restaurant hosts live local music on select nights. The 19 rooms are massive and quiet, with spotless interiors and attractive local art on the walls. They include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and minibars. It's at least a 10-minute walk to the beach and there's no shuttle, making the comparatively high rates a bit of a bummer. In fact, you can be beachfront at the clean and more modern Respati Beach Hotel for prices that are often lower.

Besakih Beach Hotel
Jln. Danau Tamblingan No 45, Po Box 3306

This quiet, garden-filled property is a decent two-pearl option for travelers who only need the basics for a beachfront stay. It's not exactly a new hotel, though the 79 rooms feature air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and basic minibars. However, they are tired and worn, and some features are outdated. The hotel has two dining areas and bars, and the two pools are definitely a highlight. They're immaculately kept and the one by the beach has great views out to sea. It was filled with relaxing guests during our visit. There's low-key entertainment on select nights of the week, plus seating exclusively for hotel guests on the beach. If you don't mind losing direct beach access, you'll get far more style and substance for your money at Oasis Lagoon Sanur.

Emerald Villas
Jalan Karangsari no 5, Sanur,Bali, Indonesia

The three-pearl Emerald Villas -- at the southern end of Sanur -- is a fine option for guests wanting a private tropical getaway without the luxury price tag. There are 31 units here, though common amenities are kept to a bare minimum. That's because each of the villas, which range from one- to four-bedroom configurations, include private pools, full kitchens, and other homey comforts. Despite the hotel's luxury claims, the atmosphere is casual and the Balinese-influenced style is showing some wear. There is a restaurant and bar on-site, but that's about it for features. Travelers who'd like a more refined take on Balinese style, but are willing to sacrifice private pools, might consider Klumpu Bali Resort instead. But keep in mind that rates there will be higher.

Prama Sanur Beach Bali
Jl Cemara Sanur

The 428-room Prama Sanur Beach Bali is a family-friendly, upper-middle-range resort located on one of the best beaches in Bali and within walking distance of dozens of restaurants and shops. Rooms are spacious and feature balconies, minibars, and electric kettles, but range from stylish and contemporary to dated and worn. High-end villas have full kitchens and big gardens with private pools. Although the on-site beach is the definite highlight here, the hotel also features two large pools -- including one with slides for children -- an excellent spa, and four restaurants, two of which have panoramic beach views. The Prama Sanur offers a relaxing beachfront vacation without the luxury price tag, but couples seeking a more intimate property may prefer the Kamuela Sanur.
