Hotel Le Crystal
1100 Rue de la Montagne

The 131-room Hotel Le Crystal is a sleek and luxurious high-rise with great Montreal city views from the 12th-floor indoor pool, a hot tub with a patio, and a modern gym. One- and two-bedroom suites feature kitchenettes and living rooms, and some have fireplaces and balconies overlooking the city. A bistro serves French cuisine and Starbucks is in the lobby. For conventions there’s 6,000 square feet of modernly designed space. This downtown location is near the Bell Centre; travelers seeking a quiet Old Town location can try the InterContinental Montreal.

Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-ville
380 Sherbrooke Street West

The Hilton Garden Inn has a convenient location near McGill University in Downtown Montreal, and spacious, clean (if generic) rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves. The indoor saltwater lap pool is attractive, with excellent city views and a connected outdoor terrace, and the fitness center is large and bright. But the property lacks distinctive charm.

Princess Hotel
35-39 Argyle Street, Kings Cross

There are 31 rooms at this two-pearl property set just off London’s Euston Road. It’s a central and convenient location for visitors to the city as many attractions and transport links like St. Pancras International train station are within a short walk. The guest rooms are basic, modern, and well maintained, though some do not have en-suite bathrooms. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and an airport shuttle and parking are both available for an additional fee, but there are few other features. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Alhambra Hotel, a similar property where breakfast is included in the room rate.

Rosedon Hotel
61 Pitts Bay Road

This 44-room Hamilton hotel centered around an early 20th-century mansion is all about ambiance, from the grand circular drive flanked by stunning gardens to the beautifully restored interiors of the main house. Of course, amenities are scarce at this boutique property -- it lacks a fitness center, spa, and restaurant -- but a small pool, beautiful and unique rooms, and an authentic English charm give it an edge over similarly priced hotels in the area. Still, if you simply must have a beach nearby, consider heading to a different neighborhood altogether, as the closest sand and surf is a good 10-minute drive away.

Loden Hotel
1177 Melville Street

This 77-room luxury boutique has a modern, stylish feel, with a glam lobby (think: velvet couches, dark wood ceilings, and a stunning black-and-white granite fireplace surround) and a popular French bistro. The large, sleek rooms may be the highlight, with subtle earth tones, floor-to-ceiling windows, and decadent marble bathrooms, but the Downtown Vancouver location is convenient as well. The only real downsides are the extra fees for valet parking and Wi-Fi.

Auberge du Vieux-Port
97 Rue de la Commune East

Situated across from Le Vieux-Port, this 45-room hotel reflects the charm of Old Montreal. Its beautiful, airy rooms -- some with water views -- feature details like wood-beam ceilings, exposed stone and brick walls, wrought-iron beds, and pine or bamboo floors, plus lovely bathrooms with big glass showers. The larger, apartment-style "lofts" are in a separate building, and designed for long-term stays. The hotel's seasonal rooftop terrace restaurant offers phenomenal water views, and the full free breakfast served at Taverne Gaspar each morning is a perk. But because of the location near restaurants and bars, noise in the rooms may be a problem, especially during the summer months. Travelers may want to compare rates with LHotel Montreal, another Old Montreal property housed in a 19th-century structure, but with a hip lobby bar, small gym, and a collection of contemporary art, including works by Botero and Warhol.

St. Regis Hotel
602 Dunsmuir Street

Despite the "St. Regis" name, this historic, mid-range boutique hotel in Downtown Vancouver is unaffiliated with the famous luxury brand. Rooms are on the small side for Vancouver, but they are cute and modern, and extras like free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and free long-distance calls add value. There's a casual bar and grill on-site, and two excellent restaurants next door: Gotham Steakhouse and the chic Shore Club Restaurant.

Crowne Plaza London - The City
19 New Bridge Street

With its corporate identity and awkward placement in London's financial district, the upscale Crowne Plaza London is a good fit for business travelers. But its chic modern rooms, proximity to popular sites, and unique perks -- such as a special "sleep packet" curated by a New York doctor to aid in a good-night's sleep -- make for a good value stay for leisure travelers, too.

Premier Inn London Leicester Square Hotel
1 Leicester Place, Leicester Square

The 47-room Premier Inn London Leicester Square is a mid-range, chain hotel with clean, comfortable, and modern facilities, if not somewhat generic decor. It’s a great value for the location, especially for those who want to sightsee in London -- the hotel is one-minute walk from the tube, a five-minute walk from Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus, and a 20-minute walk from Buckingham Palace. Rooms are well-maintained, quiet, and a good size for a central London property. They come equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and comfortable beds, but don’t have mini-fridges and the free Wi-Fi can be slow. The on-site restaurant serves a buffet breakfast, but it doesn’t come standard in the room rate. The price is hard to beat for the area -- the nearby every hotel Piccadilly is a similar property that has an on-site gym, but it’s usually more expensive.

Apex London Wall Hotel
7-9 Copthall Avenue

The Apex London Wall Hotel is located in the heart of the business and financial district of London. This 83-room hotel is part of a mid-sized chain that offers quality service and reasonable room rates. All rooms are tastefully decorated with comfortable furnishings, 40-inch flat-screen TVs, and stocked minibars. Room amenities include free Wi-Fi along with separate soaking tubs and walk-in showers in all room categories. Some rooms have balconies while all have an electric kettle and free mineral water. Hotel highlights include a modern fitness center and Off The Wall Restaurant and Bar. While this neighborhood can sometimes be quiet on weekends, it is near transport for easy exploration of London.
