Beaufort House
45 Beaufort Gardens, Knightsbridge

The upscale Beaufort House's, located one block from Harrods department store in the heart of posh Knightsbridge, has 21 spacious and bright apartments. Plenty of upmarket restaurants and bars are nearby, plus the South Kensington and Knightsbridge tube stations are within a five- to 10-minute walk. There’s no restaurant or bar on site, but all apartments have dining areas and a full kitchen that's stocked with basic groceries free of charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and guests can access a nearby Aquilla Healthclub for free. For a historic boutique hotel with an excellent on-site restaurant, guests may want to consider The Levin, just a few blocks away.

Holiday Inn Express London - Greenwich
85 Bugsby's Way, Greenwich

The mid-range Holiday Inn Express London - Greenwich is a basic chain hotel for couples and families looking to be within walking distance to the O2 Arena. But it’s far from London's center, and most nearby conference centers require at least a 15-minute drive. The 162 rooms have modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, though the style is dated and rooms are small. Hotel highlights include a free breakfast buffet, a restaurant offering a simple dinner menu, and two meeting rooms. There’s no fitness center, and parking requires a fee. At the time of this writing, renovations were taking place, slated to be completed by spring 2016. For travelers who want to explore tourist attractions, the Nadler Soho might be a better choice.

HI Montreal Hostel
1030 Mackay

Part of the worldwide Hostelling International chain, the two-pearl HI-Montreal is well located in a residential neighborhood downtown near attractions and public transportation. Spartan shared rooms are clean and no-frills, but they're reasonably priced for travelers who need little more than a place to bunk. A few private rooms have the added bonus of a flat-screen TV and in-room bathrooms, though their atmosphere is equally stark. But free breakfast, hostel-organized activities, and the hip bar/lounge make this hostel a friendly communal place. Rates at nearby hotels such as the Hotel Espresso aren’t much higher on certain dates, so shop around before assuming this is the best deal in the city for private accommodations downtown.

Clayton Hotel Chiswick
626 Chiswick High Road, Chiswick

A luxury boutique hotel with a "mid-century meets retro California" aesthetic, the Clayton Hotel Chiswick is located in west London, in a relatively peaceful suburban setting. Retro-styled rooms feature plush beds and flat-screen TVs. Facilities include a fitness room and a restaurant with British and Californian cuisine. There's a fee for in-room Wi-Fi and on-site parking is unavailable. The hotel is a good option for those who want a little boutique style and a relatively affordable rate, and don't mind staying outside of central London.

University of Toronto - New College Residence - Wilson Hall Residence
40 Willcocks St

If the 260 plain guest rooms at Wilson Hall Residence look like dorms, it's because they are. The University of Toronto’s downtown campus rents out dorms from May to August, when school isn't in session. The lovely central location is within a 10-minute walk of two subway stations, as well as attractions like Chinatown and the Royal Ontario Museum. Guests have free access to common rooms with kitchens, but most other amenities, from fitness facilities to breakfast, come at an extra fee. The two-pearl property is uninspiring overall, but it offers some of the best rates in the city for its location, making it a competitive choice for guests prioritizing price over amenities. Suite Dreams Toronto Bed & Breakfast is a nearby budget option, open year round with free breakfast.

ByWard Blue Inn
157 Clarence St

The mid-range ByWard Blue Inn offers comfortable accommodations for affordable rates in a central Ottawa location. It's situated on the edge of bustling ByWard Market, and although it's surrounded by restaurants and nightclubs, the property's street is residential and relatively peaceful. The 46 studio-style guest rooms are contemporary and very well-maintained, with hardwood floors and nicely equipped kitchenettes. Many units feature balconies with city views. There's no full restaurant or fitness center, but freebies include hot breakfast, loaner laptops, afternoon tea with treats, and a sauna that can be reserved. Travelers looking for a property with more amenities such as a restaurant and pool can check out Cartier Place Suites Hotel.

Courtyard Montreal Downtown
380 Rene-Levesque Boulevard West

The contemporary, three-and-a-half-pearl Courtyard by Marriott Montreal Downtown is a good choice for leisure and business travelers alike, situated only a block from the convention center and an easy walk to the subway station and Old Montreal. Its 210 rooms are spacious and clean with large, modern bathrooms. The rooftop indoor pool and fitness center are a big plus. But rates can be pricey on certain dates, and downtown Montreal has many comparable hotels from which to choose in equally convenient locations. Some, like the Embassy Suites by Hilton Montreal, could offer better rates so it might pay to compare before booking.

The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto
181 Wellington St W

From its high-end decor to its high-tech amenities, the 267-room Ritz-Carlton exudes a luxurious vibe. The design style is a blend of modern and traditional; the lobby, for example, features large open arches, wood-paneled walls, trendy mid-century modern furniture, high ceilings with funky fixtures -- and the occasional large marble leaf embossed on the tile floor. The sleek rooms, decorated in neutral colors with jewel-toned accents, are massive (even the standard deluxe ones). The large marble bathrooms are impressive, with separate showers and tubs, heated floors, and TVs in the mirrors. But with top-notch luxury comes over-the-top prices: the restaurant, lounge, and spa are super expensive, and the fee for Wi-Fi may make some guests feel nickel-and-dimed.

Hotel Le Crystal
1100 Rue de la Montagne

The 131-room Hotel Le Crystal is a sleek and luxurious high-rise with great Montreal city views from the 12th-floor indoor pool, a hot tub with a patio, and a modern gym. One- and two-bedroom suites feature kitchenettes and living rooms, and some have fireplaces and balconies overlooking the city. A bistro serves French cuisine and Starbucks is in the lobby. For conventions there’s 6,000 square feet of modernly designed space. This downtown location is near the Bell Centre; travelers seeking a quiet Old Town location can try the InterContinental Montreal.

Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-ville
380 Sherbrooke Street West

The Hilton Garden Inn has a convenient location near McGill University in Downtown Montreal, and spacious, clean (if generic) rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves. The indoor saltwater lap pool is attractive, with excellent city views and a connected outdoor terrace, and the fitness center is large and bright. But the property lacks distinctive charm.
