PortoBay Rio de Janeiro Hotel
Avenida Atlantica 1500

The Porto Bay Rio Internacional Hotel is located across the street from the popular Copacabana beach. This clean, 117-room hotel is a good mid-range option with simple, sleek decor including blonde wood floors, small modern bathrooms, and a nearly all-white color palette. All rooms have stocked minibars and electric kettles, and some have balconies overlooking the ocean. The small rooftop pool, poolside bar, and fitness center all have great views, and on the beach, attendants provide guests with towels, chairs, and umbrellas. There are also tasty on-site restaurants (one with a free breakfast buffet), and 24-hour room service is available. However, there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi and the spa only offers limited services.

Belmond Copacabana Palace
Avenida Atlantica, 1702

The palatial 243-room Belmond Copacabana Palace is an historic Art Deco hotel just off the beach in Rio De Janeiro. The luxury property, now part of the Belmond hotel group, is classic and classy, with spacious, high-ceilinged common spaces and service staff that attend to guests throughout the hotel, the pool, and on the beach. Rooms are plush and elegant, and many have city or ocean views, well-stocked minibars, and beautifully tiled Juliet balconies. Features include a luxe spa, heated outdoor pool, and three highly regarded restaurants, as well as a lounge with a live DJ. This is one of the best hotels in town, and among the most expensive. Guests seeking something less formal, though still luxurious, could try Hotel Santa Teresa MGallery by Sofitel, which sits upon a tropically landscaped former coffee plantation.

Pousada Laguna
Rua dos Atobas 22, Foguete

Pousada Laguna is a wonderful budget option just across the street from the white sands and blue waters of Praia do Foguete. The hotel is much like a beach club, with a large outdoor space where kids can play, a heated outdoor pool, and all-day restaurant and bar. Breakfast buffet is included in the rates, and free Wi-Fi and beach gear to borrow add to the value. The 40 rooms are divided into charming Deluxe Rooms with hammocks and whirlpools or Standard Rooms with bunk beds. Note that there are some maintenance issues throughout and parking isn't available. As a nearby alternative, Pousada do Albatroz has free parking and a wider variety of room options.

ModeVie Boutique Hotel
Rua Augusto Zatti 160, Centro

The 15-room ModeVie Boutique Hotel is a mid-range property in downtown Gramado that offers a chic alternative to the chalet-style hotels in the area. Swapping Bavarian decor for clean, modern touches, this adults-only property is streamlined but still romantic. There's a delicious free breakfast served until early afternoon -- a bonus for late sleepers -- and a stylish, small bar off the lobby, plus an attached wine and cheese shop. Rooms include lots of tech toys such as large flat-screen TVs, iPads, and major sound systems; some rooms also have whirlpool tubs and balconies. While there is no gym or pool, there is a small, no-frills spa. Parking is street only, but bicycles are available for guest use, and most everything is walkable from this charming downtown hotel. Those looking for a family-friendly option could try the Hotel Ritta Höppner.

Windsor Copa Hotel
Av. Nossa Senhora De Copacabana 335

Windsor Copa Hotel is a pleasant mid-range hotel in the Posto 2 section of north Copacabana. It's a one-block walk to the neighborhood's famous beach and a five-minute walk to the Cardeal Arcoverde Metro station. The hotel's free hot-and-cold breakfast buffet is quite good and has lots of options, and the 146 rooms are clean, quiet, and modern. They include free Wi-Fi, minibars, and flat-screen TVs. Although the hotel fewer facilities than its sister property, the Windsor Atlantica, room quality here is more modern than nearby Astoria Palace. The Windsor Copa is a good choice for travelers who want affordable rates in a prime location near the beach.

Porto de Galinhas Praia Hotel
Rodovia PE 09-Km 06

Porto de Galinhas Praia Hotel is a simple, upper-middle-range property with immediate access to one of Brazil’s top-rated beaches. The lovely white-sand beach is lined with loungers and umbrellas, and more can be found at the outdoor pool that has activities during the day. An adjacent bar and spa pavilion, a kids' club with playground, and attractive event spaces. The 123 spacious rooms come with minibars, flat-screen TVs and private outdoor areas; unfortunately, only upgraded ones standout out in terms of style. Another downside is that there’s only one full-service restaurant here, which may be an issue for guests planning to spend most of their time on-site. Of course, Porto (as the locals call it) is a popular tourist destination, so there’s no shortage of area alternatives. For something a bit more modern, consider the similarly priced Kembali Hotel.

Hotel Pousada Experience João Fernandes
Rua Um, Village de Búzios

The mid-range, 30-room Hotel Pousada Experience João Fernandes offers a dual identity. The body belongs to a hotel, but the soul beats to the rhythm of a small "pousada" (guest house). In any case, it offers a great location just a five-minute walk from the popular João Fernandes beach. The hotel changed ownership in 2013 and renovations were completed in mid 2015. It offers basic but clean rooms that all come with furnished balconies and views. Breakfast is included in the room rate and Wi-Fi is free in all areas.

Comfort Suítes Oscar Freire
Rua Oscar Freire 1948

This mid-range hotel is located in the emerging Pinheiros neighborhood, situated between the nightlife of Vila Madelena and the upscale shopping of Jardins. The hotel’s distinguishing feature is that all it’s rooms are suites, which offer more space than standard rooms in the area, including a small seating area -- some units have space for a kitchette. Beyond the rooms, the amenities -- a drab restaurant with a free breakfast buffet, tiny lobby bar, and rooftop lap pool -- are functional but uninspired. For families or business travelers looking for rooms with extra space, the Comfort Suites Oscar Friere offers a good value. But for a stay in Pinheiros with more style (but smaller rooms) check out the nearby Mercure Sao Paulo Pinheiros Hotel at a similar price point.

Acapulco Copacabana
Rua Gustavo Sampaio 854

This mid-range hotel in the Leme district of north Copacabana offers clean, basic, colorful rooms, including large Family Rooms. The most appealing part of the hotel is its bright, stylish lobby with fresh orchids and a tropical feel.** **Amenities include free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There is no swimming pool, unlike at some other mid-range options (Windsor Martinique or Ibiza Copacabana), but the hotel is just a block away from Copacabana beach. The nearest metro station (Cardial Arcoverde) can be reached in a 10- to 15-minute walk.

Ipanema Inn
Rua Maria Quiteria, 27, Ipanema

The 56-room Ipanema Inn is a two-and-a-half-pearl property whose best feature is its location, just a two-minute walk from the beach and close to shops, dining, and nightlife. Its spartan, minimalistic rooms are on the small side, but they are modern, clean, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Some have views of the beach, and suites add terraces or balconies. The on-site restaurant is highly regarded, and it serves a free breakfast buffet daily, as well as lunch and dinner. For travelers who want to be in the thick of the action and close to the beach, Ipanema Inn is a solid choice. It's worth checking out Arpoador Inn, though, a mid-range property that sits directly on the beach closer to Copacabana. It has a bar and similar rates.
