Hotel Mar Palace Copacabana
Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana 552

The 103-room Hotel Mar Palace Copacabana is a mid-range property situated in the heart of Copacabana. Guests can walk to the beach in less than 10 minutes and to the closest metro station in about five minutes. The area is filled with restaurants, shops, and bars. Rooms aren't fancy, but they're clean and come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. The restaurant serves all meals, including a free breakfast buffet, and there are bars in the lobby and on the rooftop. Other features include a small fitness center and five meeting rooms. Travelers looking for a similar hotel with slightly lower rates could check out the Golden Tulip Rio Leme, which has much better views from its rooftop.

Tivoli Mofarrej Sao Paulo
Alameda Santos, 1437, Cerqueira César

The 220-room Tivoli Sao Paulo Mofarrej is a luxurious option near the downtown area and Avenida Paulista. Rooms are decorated in neutral colors and feature flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and 24-hour room service, but bathrooms are on the small side. Suites and collection rooms might be worth the upgrade as they feature butler service. Hotel highlights include a spacious, light-filled lobby with a glass roof, a small outdoor pool (with odd orange tiling) surrounded by cabanas, and an upscale spa by Banyan Tree. There are several dining and drinking options on-site, including the top-level restaurant with beautiful city views. Family features include welcome gifts for kids and a policy where children under six eat free in the restaurants.

Transamerica Prime Barra
Avenida Gastao Senges 395

This four-pearl business hotel is located in a residential area in Barra da Tijuca that's closer to office parks than the beachElegant, Deluxe Rooms include kitchenettes and most have balconies with distant ocean views. There's a tropically landscaped swimming pool with a swim-up bar, two-story fitness center, and contemporary lobby bar. The restaurant serves a free breakfast buffet and a la carte lunch and dinner. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. This is a good pick for business travelers, but those who want fast access to the beach and restaurants should try Royal Rio Palace Hotel.

Merlin Copacabana Hotel
Avenida Princesa Isabel N 392

Three-pearl Merlin Copacabana Hotel has a solid location near the beach and Sugarloaf Mountain, and within easy reach of Copacabana's Posto 2 shopping and dining options. Decor in the shared areas is a little gaudy, but includes a nice split-level piano bar -- and the restaurant serves a free buffet breakfast. The hotel's best feature is its rooftop pool, which has a garden-like atmosphere and views over the city, ocean, and mountains. Meeting rooms, a small workout room, and sauna are also valuable pluses. The 145 rooms are basic and the furniture is dated, though features include air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. For more modern rooms in the same part of town, guests could take a look at Hotel Premier Copacabana, though it lacks a restaurant.

Hotel Bangalos da Serra
Rua Moze Scur 1511, Bairro Casagrande

The 48-room Hotel Bangalos da Serra is a family-friendly, upper-middle-range hotel with beautiful grounds in a quiet area outside of Gramado. With a focus on sustainability, the property is almost farmlike, with expansive green gardens and live animals on-site, a great feature for families with kids. Rooms and bungalows are simple and homey, with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and climate control; some even have charming wood-burning stoves. There is a nice outdoor pool with a children's pool, a small fitness center, and a game room plus a restaurant and bar open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The tranquil location is great for unwinding, but guests will need a car to tour the area sights.

Pousada Jardim Secreto
Rua Fredolino Guilherme Bier 110

This family-run, upper-middle-range bed-and-breakfast located in a quiet residential section just outside of downtown Gramado is a darling little romantic escape with -- as the name implies -- delightful gardens. Intimate and friendly, the property has 12 rooms that vary in decor and size, but all have individual charm and modern amenities like minibars, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are showers only but generally are very clean. There is no on-site restaurant, but the free daily breakfast is top-notch. An easy 10 to 15 minute walk to the city center, this hotel is well-positioned for exploring area attractions, as well as for enjoying a relaxing respite.

Landmark Residence
Alameda Jau 1607

The Landmark Residence is a value hotel with 49 rooms arranged over 13 floors in the heart of Sao Paulo. The hotel’s best feature is undoubtedly its location in the Jardins District, just two blocks from bustling Paulista Avenue. While the decor in some of the guest rooms has a '90s vibe, the hotel has elements that appeal to value-minded families or business travelers on longer stays. For example, all rooms include a small kitchenette, suites offer spacious living rooms, there’s a squash court, European restaurant, and a nice outdoor pool area. Overall, the Landmark Residence might work for those in need of a kitchen or a larger space while on a budget, but for most travelers to Jardins, check out the nearby Mercure São Paulo Jardins Hotel -- but rates are slightly higher.

Recanto Cataratas Thermas Resort & Convention
Av. Costa E Silva 3500

This upper-middle-range resort is situated on large, well-maintained grounds in Foz do Iguaçu. There's not much in the area, but it's about a 40-minute drive to the Iguazu Falls. Features cater to leisure travelers : outdoor and indoor pools, spa and fitness facilities, and a kids' club. Conference facilities attract business travelers, plus there are two restaurants and several bars, including a pub with bowling lanes. The 300 clean and spacious apartments and suites have flat-screen TVs and minibars, but the free Wi-Fi can be weak in some units and though there are balconies, they're not furnished. Travelers seeking proximity to the waterfalls and who don't mind splurging should check out the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas.

Atlantis Copacabana
Rua Bulhoes de Carvalho 61

The 86-room Atlantis Copacabana is a value property with an awesome location between Copacabana and Ipanema. Guests can walk to either in less than five minutes, and Ipanema's Sunday Hippie Fair is a 10-minute walk away. Buses stop close by as well. A free breakfast buffet with hot and cold items is served daily, and the restaurant and bar offer light fare throughout the day. Rooms are nothing fancy, but they have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Some have nice views of the ocean, but some look onto walls and there are no balconies. A rooftop terrace with a tiny pool provides spectacular views of the ocean. For a similar alternative, check out the Astoria Copacabana, which has a bigger pool, a fitness center, and a steam room.

Hilton Sao Paulo Morumbi
Avenida das Nacoes Unidas 12901, Torre Leste Brooklin Novo

This upscale hotel is an excellent option in Sao Paulo for business travelers. It's part of the massive CENU business complex, and provides underground access to a shopping mall and the convention center. Business-friendly amenities include everything from 13,000 square feet of meeting space and a staffed business center to cell phone rentals and 24-hour room service. And though it does not have a kids' club (very few hotels in Sao Paulo do), the Hilton is a surprisingly kid-friendly business hotel, with children's menus in the three restaurants and children's video rentals. Plus, though it's a bit dated, kids will likely enjoy the indoor pool, which is part of the large 24-hour fitness center. Rooms are spacious, and also well-equipped for business travelers, featuring large work desks, flat-screen TVs, and marble bathrooms. Rooms have a chain-like look with a color scheme of whites and beiges, but they still feel sleek and contemporary.
