Courtyard Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South
2501 Atlantic Avenue

The mid-range Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront/South has an excellent location on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk -- and each of its 141 guest rooms have furnished balconies with sweeping ocean views. All units are spacious, and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Microwaves are stationed on each floor in hallways next to ice machines. Features include a bistro and bar that serves breakfast for an extra fee, and there's a cafe with to-go items and Starbucks coffee. There's no outdoor pool, and while the indoor pool is in a bright space and there's a fitness center, both are on the small side. Travelers looking for accommodations with similar rates and free hot breakfast can consider Best Western Plus Oceanfront Virginia Beach.

Lux Hotel & Spa, Trademark Collection by Wyndham
117 S Watson Rd

The 192-room Blue Cypress Hotel is a reliable and affordable budget option for families, school sports teams, and other groups who want to be within a 10-minute drive to the AT&T Stadium or Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. Despite being independently owned, the property has the look and features of a chain hotel. Common areas and rooms, though renovated, appear dated, but have mini-fridges and microwaves. There’s a well-equipped gym, the restaurant has decent food and entertainment, and there’s an outdoor and an indoor lap pool (the latter could use better ventilation). Freebies include a simple breakfast, parking, and (spotty) Wi-Fi. For slightly higher rates, the Holiday Inn Arlington has a fresher aesthetic, plus free shuttles to the airport and local attractions.

Comfort Inn Williamsburg Gateway
331 Bypass Rd

The three-pearl Comfort Inn Williamsburg Gateway offers modern and clean accommodations that are only a short drive from Colonial Williamsburg and other area attractions. Formerly a Days Inn, the property remains bright and fresh from a 2015 renovation, with a lovely lobby and tidy grounds. Freebies include a hot breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi. It also has an outdoor pool and fitness center, but both are on the small side. Its 116 guest rooms are comfortable and well-equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Two-bedroom, two-bathroom suites also are available. Travelers looking to stay closer to downtown and don't mind spending slightly more can consider Williamsburg Lodge-Colonial Williamsburg.

Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection
310 South England Street

Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection is an upper-middle-range hotel situated within a five-minute walk from the Williamsburg Historic District. The hotel's central location is a huge highlight, and the free shuttle service around the area is another bonus. The 323 guest rooms feature traditional colonial interiors combined with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi; some have mini-fridges. There are two on-site restaurants; one serves a sit-down breakfast, or there's a buffet breakfast in the lobby (not included in room rates). Features are extensive and include three pools, a fitness center, and spa. There's a large conference center with 10 meeting rooms, as well as a business center. While further out from Colonial Williamsburg, The Historic Powhatan Resort is another colonial-style hotel with a broad selection of features to consider.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Alexandria-Old Town
1900 Diagonal Rd

This large, 288-suite hotel offers a solid range of amenities and a great location in the heart of charming Old Town Alexandria. Highlights include an indoor pool, restaurant, business center, free local shuttle, and a 24-hour fitness center. Competitive rates and a free breakfast buffet make Embassy Suites an especially good upper-middle-range value for families and groups (select suites can sleep up to six). Those who want to avoid parking fees should consider the Hampton Inn & Suites Alexandria Old Town Area South, located in a drab neighborhood two miles away.

Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Williamsburg Historic Area, VA
400 Bypass Rd

The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Williamsburg Historic Area is just a short five-minute drive from Colonial Williamsburg. This value hotel’s 66 rooms were renovated in 2016 and have microwaves and mini-fridges. A free breakfast buffet with waffles and biscuits and gravy is a great amenity and it's paired with an indoor pool and hot tub, business center, and free Wi-Fi and parking. The fitness center is a bit of a let-down with only three machines. Travelers may want to consider the Hampton Inn & Suites Williamsburg Historic District as it has a small snack shop on-site and the gym offers free weights and extra cardio machines.

Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center
2800 Shore Dr

This 295-room mid-range hotel sits on Chesapeake Bay and is a popular spot for events, but has certainly seen better days -- the look throughout is dated and worn. All rooms are spacious multi-room suites with efficiencies and balconies, but they're austere and feature old tube TVs. There is a private beach that's accessible only to guests and surrounding residents. On-site amenities are plentiful and include TradeWinds restaurant, which serves a popular Sunday brunch, plus a cafe, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, and a free local shuttle. For something more modern, travelers might want to check out the Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront / N 37th St.

Hyatt Regency Crystal City at Reagan National Airport
2799 Jefferson Davis Hwy

Especially popular among business travelers, this 686-room, upper-middle-range Hyatt has plenty of meeting space and a great location near Reagan National Airport and Washington, D.C. Highlights include a full-service restaurant, lounge bar, and heated outdoor pool. Rooms are modern but not stylish. Travelers should also consider Hampton Inn & Suites Reagan National Airport, three blocks north, which has more in-room amenities, free breakfasts, and a better location near the subway.

Best Western Historic Area Inn
201 Bypass Rd

The two-and-a-half-pearl Best Western Plus Historic Area Inn offers solid value and a convenient location for tourists visiting Colonial Williamsburg and other local attractions. Located on Bypass Road/Route 60, it’s a short drive to the area’s historic sites and amusement parks, and a brief walk to several restaurants. Features include a free hot breakfast buffet, heated indoor pool/whirlpool, guest laundry room, and free Wi-Fi and parking. It also has a fitness center, but it’s on the small side. Its 122 guest rooms are spacious but a bit dated, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, and Kings feature sleeper sofas. Rates are among the most attractive in the area, considering the free breakfast. For more modern guest rooms, compare rates with the nearby Comfort Inn Williamsburg Gateway, which was completely renovated in 2015.

DoubleTree by Hilton Williamsburg
50 Kingsmill Rd

The three-and-a-half-pearl DoubleTree by Hilton Williamsburg attracts droves of tourists who are visiting nearby Busch Gardens, and its large conference center is popular with business groups. The full-service hotel has value-added amenities, including a spacious indoor/outdoor pool, three on-site restaurants, a fitness center, and shuttles to Busch Gardens (for a fee). Its 295 guest rooms are spacious and comfortable, with pleasant, contemporary decor, and they come equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no microwaves or safes. Travelers looking for a more modern hotel with a free hot breakfast can check out Comfort Suites Bypass.
