Marriott Stanton South Beach
161 Ocean Drive

The 224-room Marriott Stanton South Beach is an upscale beachfront hotel at the quiet southern end of South Beach's lively Ocean Drive. Fresh rooms have tasteful beachy decor plus coffeemakers and mini-fridges; furnished balconies are a nice touch and some have ocean views. Two outdoor pools and a hot tub overlook the Atlantic, and a small spa offers a sauna and modern gym. On-site dining options include a Mexican eatery and a great beachfront seafood restaurant and bar, plus several shops including a gelateria that's a perfect treat in tropical Miami. Renovations are ongoing until 2018, so guests may want to compare prices at The Savoy Hotel, though rooms aren't as nice.

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
2552 Kalakaua Avenue

Marriott Resort Waikiki beach is a three-and-a-half-pearl, 1,310-room resort located across the street from the beach, along the southeast edge of Waikiki’s strip. It's also just a block away from the Waikiki Aquarium and Zoo, making it a great spot to experience Waikiki but not be in the center of it. The rooms are a bit dated, but include necessities like Netflix-loaded flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. There's a nice gym and Aveda spa, plus a range of dining options from seafood to Italian. Excellent Diamond Head sunsets are on offer from the ocean-view restaurant and bar. For travelers seeking a straightforward family-friendly resort near the beach, this hotel is a decent value, especially when compared to other area options like Princess Kaiulani

The Standard, High Line
848 Washington Street, at West 13th Street

The Standard, High Line is an upscale, one-of-a-kind Meatpacking District hotel that’s architecturally striking, hovering above the High Line park on concrete pillars. The 338 ultra-modern rooms look a bit like ship cabins and feature huge windows, which flood them with natural light and present staggering views (and can also result in a bit of a peep show, so consider yourself warned). However, some are small and have limited storage space. Several trendy eateries and bars, including a rooftop bar, nightclub, and a beer garden, make this one of the hippest hotels in New York City. Be aware that there's no spa on-site. Cool-seekers might also be drawn to the scene at the Gansevoort.

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort
2169 Kalia Rd

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort is a three-and-a-half-pearl oceanfront resort that sits along a quieter stretch of Waikiki's beach. It’s 635 spacious, air-conditioned rooms have old-school tropical interiors plus flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and mini-fridges. Sadly, balconies aren't standard, but ocean views can be stellar. Upgraded rooms include private lounge access with free breakfasts, snacks, and drinks. Two restaurants, a modern 24-hour gym, a well-liked spa, and entertainment round out the amenities. Freebies range from vow-renewal ceremonies to cultural activities like ukulele and hula lessons. While the pool lacks sea views, the live music in the evenings is a nice bonus. So is the lack of resort fees. Sister property Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort is also worth a look, as it's often a touch cheaper (though the beach there is busier).

Napili Kai Beach Resort
5900 Lower Honoapiilani Rd

This low-key, low-rise condo hotel in serene Napili Bay has an authentic Hawaiian vibe that you won't find at Maui's mega-resorts. The pools are small, the gym is small and dank, and some rooms could use renovation, but it's still a gem for travelers intent on quiet, beachside relaxation and an ocean view from every room.

Grand Hyatt New York
109 East 42nd Street, Park Avenue at Grand Central Terminal

The upper-middle-range Grand Hyatt New York has a prime location in New York's corporate and tourist center. The highlight here is the location -- it's next door to Grand Central Station and within a 15-minute walk of Times Square, Bryant Park, and Rockefeller Center, although the Midtown address can be too chaotic for some guests. The 1,306 modern rooms come in a wide range of categories, and all include a mini-fridge and windows that open (rare for NYC). New York Central restaurant, lounge, and bar serves upscale western European-inspired fare with views right over 42nd Street. There's also a 24-hour to-go market in the lobby, modern fitness center, and business center with secretarial services. Travelers seeking a chain hotel in a slightly quieter setting, should check rates at The Westin New York Grand Central

Magic Castle Hotel
7025 Franklin Avenue, Hollywood

Located steps from Hollywood Boulevard, the Magic Castle is a quirky, unpretentious 40-room hotel with simple, spacious rooms, an exhaustive list of free perks (Wi-Fi, breakfast, minibar treats), access to the exclusive Magic Castle club next door, and exceptional service. Overall, it's a terrific value and one of L.A.'s hidden gems.

Loews Miami Beach Hotel
1601 Collins Ave

The large Lowes Miami Beach Hotel is a luxury oceanfront resort in South Beach with 790 contemporary rooms, local artisan eateries, and family-friendly features. Contemporary rooms have elegant furnishings in soft hues, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and Keurig machines, while some upgrades add balconies, VIP check-in, and separate living spaces. Guests here can use the lounger-lined beach, 24-hour room service, and big pool with a hot tub and ample loungers, as well as a swish spa and top-notch kids' club. A moderate resort fee covers non-motorized water sports, beach photoshoots, property-wide Wi-Fi, and up to two beach loungers per room. Unfortunately, umbrellas cost extra, the adults-only SOAK area requires a high fee, and some past guests have complained of noise issues. For a family-friendly hotel with more of a wild side, consider the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, which sports a popular nightclub.

SIXTY LES
190 Allen St

This gorgeous 141-room boutique joined other high-end hotels and restaurants to help revitalized the once-gritty Lower East Side neighborhood, which is known for its raucous late-night activity. For well-heeled hipsters looking for downtown action, the cool design, attentive staff, fitness center, and pool combine to make this a very fine place to crash after a night out.

Salish Lodge & Spa
6501 Railroad Ave SE

The Salish Lodge & Spa features 84 rooms in a gorgeous setting overlooking the falls in Snoqualmie, about a 40-minute drive from Seattle. The historic property, which originally opened with only eight rooms back in 1916, is a popular romantic getaway and wedding destination. The restaurants feature beautiful views, and the elegant spa has numerous signature treatments (including one with homemade honey!). Sexy rooms have wood-burning fireplaces and peek-a-boo bathrooms with two-person tubs. Families may consider staying elsewhere, as there is no pool and no amenities geared towards kids. The entire property has a soothing, rustic-luxe style; features such as stone fireplaces, stacked firewood, cashmere throws, bookcases, and warm, earth tones complement the outdoor scenery. And guests can indulge in the lodge's famous four-course breakfast before heading out to the many nearby outdoor activities. All of this comes at a price, and a daily resort fee on top seems excessive -- but then, this lodge is one of the most romantic destinations in the Pacific Northwest.
