Novotel Phuket Resort
282, Phrabarami Road

The 215-room Novotel Phuket Resort is a three-and-a-half-pearl property situated on a hillside overlooking Patong Bay and within a short walk of the beach. Rooms are pleasant and each includes modern amenities like air-conditioning and minibars plus a balcony or terrace, some with stunning views of the sea. The free breakfast buffet draws rave reviews, and there are two restaurants and three bars. The lovely outdoor pool has different sections for relaxing, sports, and kids, and the spa offers massage and body treatments. As an alternative, Burasari Resort is a more modern upscale hotel close to the action, and it offers free minibar items plus a happy hour with free snacks.

Paradise KohYao
24 Moo 4

There are 69 rooms at this four-pearl property set on the northern coast of Koh Yao Noi. It’s a quiet and unspoiled spot, and will suit those wanting to do nothing but recharge their batteries. Rooms are chic and spacious -- with lovely rustic details -- and have free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, open-air living areas, and gorgeous sea and landscape views. The Hilltop Villa is especially lovely, with a pool and stunning Phang Nga Bay views. The hotel has a good range of low-key activities on-site, from painting classes to kayaking. There are two restaurants and two bars to try, and a spa and pool. Those wanting a more traditional Thai feel in their rooms may prefer Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa, on the neighboring Koh Yao Yai.

Majestic Suites
110 - 110 / 1 Sukhumvit Road, Between

Majestic Suites is an affordable three-pearl hotel in a central location next to the Nana Plaza red light district. Decor in its 55 guest rooms and studios is a tad dated, but they're still pleasant and tidy, and all are nicely equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, kettles, robes, slippers, safes, and free Wi-Fi. On-site facilities are limited to a Thai international restaurant, but guests have access to a fitness center, indoor hot tub, sauna, and outdoor pool at the nearby Majestic Grande hotel. Travelers who want a more upscale, boutique hotel in this area might consider Galleria 10 Hotel, which also features a rooftop pool with views.

Aonang Buri Resort
118 Moo3, T Aonang, Muang

The 70-room Aonang Buri Resort is a mid-range pick across the street from the beach in Ao Nang. Rooms have minibars (fee), free coffee and tea, and private balconies or terraces -- some of which have direct access to the lovely garden pool -- but bathrooms are hopelessly out of date. The hotel's street-facing restaurant is open all day, starting with the free breakfast buffet, and, in high season, the pool bar serves drinks until mid evening. Thai massages are available in a communal room near the pool, but there's no full spa or fitness center. Both features can be found at the next-door (and pricier) Holiday Inn Krabi Ao Nang Beach.

Villa Phra Sumen Bangkok
457 Phra Sumen Road, Bavorn Niwet, Phra Nakhon

Villa Phra Sumen Bangkok is a funky budget hotel that's a 10-minute walk from the heart of Khaosan Road. The 29 rooms vary considerably in size, making this property a good option for both couples and families. Rooms are clean and feature traditional and contemporary Thai touches, along with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and views of the street or the canal beside the property. Cooked-to-order breakfasts are available for a fee and the hotel also has a canal-side veranda, and a Thai massage cottage. Free tuk-tuk service to tourist sights is a nice bonus, though most of the city's popular areas are not within walking distance. Guests might also want to consider the (typically) less expensive Rambuttri Village Inn & Plaza, which has two rooftop swimming pools.

Koh Tao Montra Resort & Spa
1/51 Moo 2

Koh Tao Montra Resort is a three-pearl beachfront hotel with a relaxed family-friendly vibe and a great range of facilities. Ideally located in a quiet part of downtown, a short walk from both Mae Haad Pier and Sairee Beach. Facilities include a large infinity swimming pool with a swim-up bar, a beachfront restaurant, a spa and gym, a tour-desk, and affiliated dive center. Sixty rooms are clean and pleasant with options including spacious suites, pool villas with ocean views, and two-bedroom family rooms. Interiors blend contemporary stylings with traditional Thai decor, and rooms have balcony seating areas and modern amenities. The beachfront is fairly quiet and nice for lounging or walks, but not as clean as neighboring beaches. Another hotel in the area worth considering is the Sensi Paradise, which has a multi-tiered pool.

The Yard Hostel
51 Phahonyotin Soi5, Phahonyotin Rd., Samsennai,Payatai

The Yard Hostel is one of Bangkok's top budget options. The stylish property is located in a hip neighborhood filled with boutiques and coffee shops, far removed from frenetic Khaosan Road. It's rare to find a garden courtyard in central Bangkok, and the hostel makes the most of it, with hammocks and a little open-air bar that serves beer and cocktails. All of the hotel's 10 units have AC and free Wi-Fi, and some have direct access to the leafy common space. There's also an indoor communal lounge with a kitchenette, and free breakfast. Travelers looking for a larger hostel can compare rates with the industrial-chic Bed Station Hostel.

LaRio Hotel Krabi
849 Moo 2, Ao Nang Soi 2/1

LaRio Hotel Krabi is a 25-room value hotel located 20 minutes by foot from the beach in Ao Nang. Built in 2017, the hotel has a fresh and stylish coastal-inspired design (picture lots of blues and rattan accents) throughout its common areas and rooms. Guest rooms come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free safes, and larger units -- including two-bedroom suites with bunk beds -- are great options for families and groups. In the mornings, a simple breakfast is served in a small breakfast room alongside LaRio's narrow dipping pool. Guests generally love the hotel for its tidiness, modern design, and friendly staff. Nonetheless, it's worth comparing LaRio's rates to the ones at the across-the-street Centra by Centara Phu Pano Resort Krabi, which has a full-service restaurant and a proper swimming pool.

Hotel Clover Asoke
9/1 Soi Sukhumvit 16, Klongtoey

This three-and-a-half pearl, 95-room hotel has a convenient location in the heart of Bangkok. It's a few minutes' walk from Asoke Train Station and Terminal 21 Shopping Mall, with plenty of trendy bars and restaurants within walking distance. The hotel has a fresh and modern feel, decorated with bold colors and quirky furnishings. Air-conditioned rooms are clean and contemporary, with flat-screen TVs, Segafredo coffeemakers, free welcome non-alcoholic minibars, and great city views -- though bathrooms are a tad cramped. The rooftop glass-bottom pool is a big hit, offering stunning city views and a poolside bar. There's also a stylish restaurant, plus a small fitness center. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Alternatively, travelers might also like the Legacy Suites Bangkok, which adds a huge outdoor pool and rooftop sports field.

Citadines Sukhumvit 16 Bangkok
38 Sukhumvit Soi 16, Klongtoey

The 79-room Citadines Sukhumvit 16 Bangkok is an upper-middle-range, apartment-style hotel that is aimed mostly at the corporate market and long-term guests. Studios and one-bedroom units feature fully furnished kitchens, spacious living quarters, work desks, and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a small pool and fitness center up on the roof, along with a guest laundry, but there is no restaurant on-site -- though there is a small breakfast area. The hotel is within walking distance of the major Asok intersection, where guests can find both Skytrain and subway stations, along with the popular Terminal 21 shopping mall. Travelers might also want to consider Phachara Suites or the Legacy Suites Bangkok, both of which offer suites with kitchens/kitchenettes.
