Hotel Gibbs Downtown San Antonio Riverwalk
105 N Alamo St

Housed in a 100-year-old bank office building, the 98-room Hotel Indigo San Antonio at the Alamo manages to preserve its historic originality while offering modern amenities and decor. Its prime location -- right next to the Alamo -- makes it a great mid-range pick for people who prefer the uniqueness of a boutique hotel.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Dallas-Medical Center
1521 Inwood Rd

Chances are if you're considering the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Dallas Central - Market Center, you're not looking for much more than an affordable place to sleep -- and there's nothing wrong with that. The rooms are clean and in good condition, the beds are comfortable, and there's a free buffet breakfast -- standard in all Holiday Inn Express hotels. The main downfall is the hotel's location -- downtown Dallas and all area attractions and restaurants are a drive away. If you're here for the Market Center, this is a great budget option. But if you're a business traveler less concerned with value and want to be closer to the action, consider staying at the Crowne Plaza Downtown instead.

Peninsula Island Resort & Spa
340 Padre Blvd

Peninsula Island Resort & Spa is an older mid-range vacation property catering to families and groups on a budget. Most of the 70 units here are apartments with cooking facilities and sofa beds, but even standard rooms feature furnished balconies, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and minibars. Maintenance, however, seems to be lacking, and there have been complaints of sloppy housekeeping. The main courtyard houses a large pool with two whirlpools, a giant chess board, and lots of lounge chairs. A wooden path links to the beach in the distance, where there are more lounge chairs still. Other amenities include a spa that uses Aveda products, a small (and dark) gym, and a restaurant with limited weekday hours. It's worth considering Isla Grand Beach Resort nearby, which offers rooms and condos and features sleeker amenities. Rates, however, are generally higher there.

Hotel Saint Cecilia
112 Academy Dr

Stylish Hotel St. Cecilia, with just 14 rooms, is a boutique hotel in the truest sense of the word. It features a sexy lounge (complete with patio seating), spacious grounds, and uber chic rooms that meld with Austin's weird vibe and cool music scene via distinct decorative touches and amenities. The centerpiece is an historic Victorian home fronting spacious, sylvan grounds and harboring four of the hotel’s beautiful suites. The long, narrow pool offers a classy place to beat the Austin heat. Plus, it's located in one of Austin's coolest neighborhoods, close to downtown shopping, historic sites, and entertainment.

Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, College Station, TX
1010 Southwest Pkwy E

The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, College Station offers travelers a comfortable stay at reasonable rates. While there isn't much within walking distance of the three-pearl hotel, it's only four minutes by car to shops and restaurants at the Post Oak Mall and 10 minutes to downtown and Texas A&M University. Freebies include a hot breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi, and there's also a heated outdoor pool and whirlpool plus a fitness center, but no full-service restaurant is on-site. Its 64 contemporary guest rooms are spacious and they come well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Travelers who want to be a bit closer to the university can compare rates at Four Points by Sheraton College Station.

Club Quarters Hotel in Houston
720 Fannin St

The 382-room Club Quarters Hotel in Houston offers a solid overall value in a central downtown location within walking distance to many attractions. The three-pearl property is a classy and contemporary business hotel housed in a historic building that was last renovated in 2015. Highlights include a restaurant/bar, 24-hour fitness center, laundry facilities, concierge and room service, and a beautiful lobby with a comfortable lounge for informal meetings, although there's no pool or whirlpool, and breakfast costs extra. Guest rooms have modern decor and come equipped with flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, but they’re a bit small and mini-fridges and microwaves aren't standard. Travelers looking for a step up can consider the upper-middle-range Embassy Suites Houston-Downtown.

Hotel Granduca Austin
320 S Capital of Texas Hwy, Bldg B

Located about 10 miles from the heart of Downtown Austin, the Hotel Granuca Austin is a luxury property styled after an Italian Villa, perched on a hillside with astounding views. Guest rooms and suites are spacious with homey, high-end Tuscan decor and amenities like minibars and bathrobes, plus huge walk-in showers. There’s also a beautiful courtyard; an outdoor pool with a bar, hot tub, submerged loungers, and cabanas; a classy Italian restaurant and cocktail bar sometimes featuring live music; a billiards room; a gym with a sauna and steam room; two spa treatment rooms; and more. Travelers can expect high-end service like concierge, valet, and room service, available around the clock. Those on the hunt for more wellness facilities, like an indoor pool and tennis courts, might consider the nearby Barton Creek Resort & Spa

Best Western Plus Lackland Hotel & Suites
3635 Crooked Trl

The two-and-a-half-pearl Best Western Plus Atrea Hotel & Suites offers modern, spacious, colored-coordinated rooms at reasonable rates. Its proximity to the Lackland Air Force Base makes it an obvious choice for visiting military families and friends, but its appeal could extend to any travelers seeking a clean, well-maintained hotel. The 77 rooms, which include two-bedroom apartment-style suites with full kitchens, come with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, and a hot breakfast is included in rates. There's also an indoor heated pool with whirlpool, a small fitness center and business center, and a cozy lobby bar. Its isolated location might be a drawback for some travelers -- there are no restaurants within walking distance, and it's a 20-minute drive to downtown. A more centrally located budget option is the Best Western Plus Sunset Suites-Riverwalk.

The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas
2121 McKinney Ave

The Ritz-Carlton Dallas is big on both style and amenities. The 218-room property is surrounded by neatly manicured hedges in a central part of Dallas, and has a sophisticated lobby with plenty of space to lounge. Rooms have traditional decor in warm colors, big, comfy beds, and generous space -- but they lack wow factor. Bathrooms have double sinks and some have a separate tub and walk-in shower. The great on-site restaurant, Fearing's, has an appealing outdoor dining pavilion. A stunning 12,000-square-foot spa and fitness center includes a full service salon, modern cardio equipment, and a relaxing outdoor pool. The fees for parking and Wi-Fi are a nuisance at a hotel of this caliber.

Hotel ZaZa Dallas
2332 Leonard St

This 169-room upscale hotel has a decidedly trendy, eclectic vibe, and offers a cool alternative to the sometimes stuffy luxury hotels in Uptown Dallas. Sophisticated rooms have lovely bathrooms with walk-in showers, and some have fun themes, such as Bohemia and Medusa. Locals and guests alike mingle at the happening bar and restaurant, and at the aptly named Poolside lounge, where DJs spin. The small pool has cushioned loungers and water features, and there's also a well-equipped fitness center. Travelers in search of a boutique property with a trendy atmosphere may also want to consider the nearby W Hotel Dallas Victory Park
