First Hotel Reisen
Skeppsbron 12

The 144-room First Hotel Reisen is a historic waterfront property in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town, just a six-minute walk from the Royal Palace. The hotel has a stylish restaurant serving Swedish fare and a popular bar that attracts both guests and locals. Wellness facilities are situated in an atmospheric basement with vaulted brick ceilings, and include spa treatment rooms, a sauna, plunge pool, and a small gym with limited equipment. Other features like meeting rooms and a charming library with a fireplace round out the perks. Guest rooms offer traditional decor and modern amenities, but some entry-level rooms can be small. Travelers could also consider the Scandic Gamla Stan -- it lacks a restaurant and wellness facilities, but does have a small rooftop terrace.

Freys Hotel
Bryggargatan 12

The 127-room Freys Hotel is an upscale hotel with boutique touches that's two blocks from Central Station in the middle of Stockholm. The hotel has a quirky equine design scheme and solid eco-friendly credentials. Rooms are sharp and cozy, and spacious suites have balconies, but many rooms are small. The bustling Belgian restaurant on-site offers an outdoor terrace plus an excellent beer selection, and the free breakfast buffet is excellent (just be prepared for a crowd). The hotel's rates for its location are hard to beat, but guests looking for even more personality in their rooms should consider the nearby Story Hotel.

Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington
6 Storgatan

Located in an affluent residential neighborhood, the mid-range Clarion Collection Hotel Wellington is within walking distance to Stureplan's street life, shopping, and nightclubs. A subway station is an eight-minute walk from the hotel, connecting to the city center in 10 to 15 minutes -- Stockholm Central Station is one stop away. Most of the hotel's 60 guest rooms have balconies or terraces, and all include flat-screen TVs, DVDs, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Suites add minibars and Nespresso machines. But none of the rooms have air-conditioning. A breakfast buffet and a dinner buffet are included in the rate. The hotel also has a lobby bar and terrace, but it lacks a fitness center (though discounts are available to a nearby gym). Travelers might want to consider the Elite Eden Park Hotel, which has a full restaurant, pub, gym, and sauna.

Elite Eden Park Hotel
22 Sturegatan, Hörnet mellan Linnégatan och Sturegatan

An upscale, city-center hotel located right next to Stockholm's lush Humlegarden Park and Stureplan square, Elite Eden Park Hotel is a stylish and serene property in Stockholm’s vibrant center. Built in 2011, the hotel has 124 bright and modern rooms spread over six floors, two restaurants, and a sauna. Miss Voon -- the chic, Asian-inspired main restaurant -- attracts discerning locals and well-heeled guests alike, while the stately, English-style Bishops Arms pub is a popular watering hole. The central location is especially popular with business travelers who appreciate a bit more character than the average chain options, but all guests enjoy perks like free chocolates and cognac each evening, Penhaligon toiletries, and free Wi-Fi.

Radisson Collection Strand Hotel, Stockholm
9 Nybrokajen

The 171-room Radisson Collection Strand Hotel, Stockholm is an upper-middle-range option with an excellent location in Stockholm's city center overlooking the harbor. A number of attractions plus restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the views of the water are spectacular, especially from higher floors. Many rooms have a fresh Scandinavian style plus flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea/coffee kettles. Superior Rooms and suites, which are more spacious and have gorgeous water views, are probably worth the splurge. The on-site restaurant serves all meals, and there's a bar in the lobby. Alternatively, travelers who don't need to be on the waterfront could check out the Sheraton Stockholm, which has an on-site fitness center and massage, plus free breakfast and parking.

Freys Hotel Lilla Radmannen
Rådmansgatan 67-69

Freys Hotel Lilla Radmannen is a mid-range, boutique-style hotel occupying a rather characterless building in central Stockholm. While the setting is relatively quiet, it's just round the corner from the busy Drottninggatan shopping area, and within walking distance of the main central station. Although most rooms are small -- with some in a neighboring block -- they are clean and decor has a personal touch. Breakfast is very good for this level of hotel, though a charge for the gym seems petty. All in all, while far from perfect, Freys Hotel offers a cheaper-than-most option in a decent location.

Scandic Hotel Star Sollentuna
8 Aniaraplatsen, Stockholm

With an elegant restaurant, a stunning atrium, and a lovely indoor swimming pool, the four-pearl Scandic Hotel Star Sollentuna is a well-rounded, stylish pick that's particularly well-suited to business travelers. Though most of the rooms are modern, some are in need of updates, and there have been complaints of cleanliness and maintenance issues. Moreover, rooms lack air-conditioning and only higher-category rooms include coffee- and tea-making facilities. The location might also put some tourists off from staying here, as the hotel is far from Stockholm’s city center (although there is a tram station nearby). Scandic Victoria Tower is a good alternative, as it's slightly closer to Stockholm and has a rooftop bar and stylish rooms.

Elite Hotel Marina Tower
25 Saltsjoeqvarns Kaj

Housed in an old converted redbrick flour mill on the edge of Stockholm's waterfront, the Elite Hotel Marina Tower is an upscale property with 186 generously sized guest rooms and suites spread over seven floors. Some rooms offer sea views, but as the hotel is in a converted mill, the windows tend to be small and rooms can feel dark. On-site wellness facilities include a spa, pool, and a fitness center, but all cost extra. The large breakfast buffet is free, and there's an on-site a la carte restaurant and bar. The hotel's location away from the center of things may deter some travelers from staying here; those looking to be closer to the city center may prefer the Elite Hotel Arcadia instead.

Scandic Grand Central
70 Kungsgatan

A stylish design hotel in a 19th-century schoolhouse and former theater, the 391-room Grand Central by Scandic is located in central Stockholm, at the major Kungsgatan-Vasagatan intersection in the Norrmalm neighborhood, putting design-conscious guests in the heart of the action. The upscale hotel offers an extensive, free daily breakfast, with organic and gluten-free options, and hosts live music events in the lobby on certain nights. It's also home to several popular bars and restaurants, and has a well-equipped gym with a sauna. Note that some of the rooms in the basement do not have windows, but this is reflected in the lower rates. It may be worth comparing to the Clarion Hotel around the corner, which has similar rates and modern rooms, but also the perk of an outdoor pool.

Hotel Skeppsholmen
Grona gangen 1, Box 1616

Boutique Hotel Skeppsholmen, located on a serene island in the center of Stockholm, is luxurious but casually so, a stylish urban retreat for travelers looking for calm without losing out on location. Housed in a historic building, the hotel blends Old World charm with modern, minimalist Scandinavian design with a finger on the pulse of all things cool -- staff uniforms come courtesy of cult brand Acne, bath products are Byredo, and bathrooms are equipped with Italian Boffi sinks. Those looking for a slightly more affordable, but equally hip, upscale stay might consider the Story Hotel in Östermalm.
