Blu St Lucia
Rodney Bay

This family-friendly, 72-room mid-range hotel on St. Lucia's northwestern coast is a five-minute walk from Reduit Beach -- a popular hub for tourists. Though the hotel shows its age, rooms have been updated with newer furnishings and flat-screen TVs (however tile floors and bathrooms could use replacing). The spacious courtyard doesn't have much of a view but offers a nice pool, outdoor dining, and tennis; there's also a breakfast buffet (included in many packages), fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. Nearby is bustling Rodney Bay for shopping, bars, and restaurants. Those seeking a more romantic experience may want to consider Crystals Hotel overlooking the breathtaking Pitons.

Boucan by Hotel Chocolat
Rabot Estate, P.O. Box 312

Boucan by Hotel Chocolat is a luxury hotel located on a historic cocoa estate outside Soufriere. The hotel’s 14 Lodges and Luxe Lodges are full of understated glamor, with plantation-style slatted shutters evoking a sense of place -- plus all have eye-popping views of Petit Piton. True to its name, chocolate plays a role in almost every element of the hotel, most notably its popular restaurant that attracts locals and non-guests with its “cacao cuisine.” There’s a sleek infinity pool, a splendid spa, and an overall atmosphere of exclusivity. The lack of in-room air-conditioning and TVs won’t appeal to everyone, and there’s no beach (although the hotel provides free daily shuttles to one nearby). Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort offers an excellent alternative for travelers looking to stay right on the beach.

Villa Beach Cottages
Choc Bay-Gros Islet Hwy, PO Box 129

Villa Beach Cottages is a three-pearl property located on Choc Bay Beach. The property’s 20 suites, which include full kitchens, are roomy if not overly modern. The two pools are small, but both have waterfall features and views of the sea. While there’s no on-site restaurant, several supermarkets and dining options are within walking distance, and meal service can be arranged upon request -- plus there’s a convenience store on-site. A great beach, barbecue facilities, and an internet room round out the features of this low-key, mid-range property. Travelers might want to compare rates and amenities with nearby Harmony Suites.

St. James's Club Morgan Bay
Gros Islet Highway, Choc Bay

The upper-middle-range, 335-room St. James's Club Morgan Bay is a family-friendly all-inclusive resort located along beach in Choc Bay. Although rooms – ranging from standard guest rooms to two-bedroom suites – are done in outdated decor that’s showing wear, they all have flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and furnished outdoor spaces with appealing views of the grounds, pools, or sea. The big draw are the resort’s reasonable all-inclusive rates, which includes food at six restaurants, alcoholic drinks at several bars, and an extensive array of activities and entertainment. Solid on-site features consist of two pools by the beach – one with a swim-up bar – an adults-only pool, and family pool with waterslides, in addition to a small spa, a well-equipped fitness center, and a decent beach. While St. James's Club doesn’t offer anything out of the ordinary, guests seeking a convenient, all-inclusive experience are likely to be satisfied. It’s worth comparing rates with the Coconut Bay Beach & Spa Resort, another all-inclusive resort with a longer beach, water park, and more impressive spa.

Bay Gardens Inn
Rodney Bay Village

The three-pearl Bay Gardens Inn is a simple property located in Rodney Bay, and while tidy, the hotel has dated decor throughout, and it isn't directly on the beach. The inn’s 33 guest rooms are unstylish but comfortable, and all come equipped with AC, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, plus furnished balconies or terraces. Features are limited to a pool, restaurant, and a bar. The added perk is that guests have access to the facilities at the inn’s two sister properties, one of which is set on Reduit Beach. Guests may want to compare rates with Ginger Lily Hotel, which is closer to the beach, but offers fewer amenities.

The Downtown Hotel
Bridge Street

The Downtown Hotel is an older, two-pearl property located in downtown Soufriere. The hotel’s 18 guest rooms are past their prime, offering worn-out decor and minimal amenities. Units do have nice views of the coast or surrounding town, but balconies are unfurnished. All come with AC, flat-screen TVs, microwaves, kettles, and fridges. Aside from free Wi-Fi, this hotel lacks any amenities, making rock-bottom rates its most appealing feature. While the hotel’s central location is convenient for exploring the attractions of south St. Lucia, the neighborhood is a tad seamy. Guests with flexibility in their budget should try Hummingbird Beach Resort instead -- the higher rates are well worth it.

Stonefield Villa Resort
Stonefield Estate

Stonefield Estate Villa Resort & Spa is a four-pearl, adults-only resort located just outside the town of Soufriere. Most of the 17 rustic-chic villas have large separate living areas and private pools, all with kitchenettes or full kitchens. The open-air restaurant and pool make the most of the resort’s striking views of Petit Piton and the Caribbean Sea below. Other amenities include a spa and a fitness center, and free freshly prepared breakfast is included in the room rate. The main downside here is the lack of beach access, although the resort provides free shuttle service to nearby beaches. Travelers might want to compare rates and amenities with nearby Anse Chastanet Resort, which has direct access to two gorgeous beaches.

East Winds
La Brellotte Bay

East Winds Inn doesn't try to compete with the mega all-inclusive resorts on St. Lucia. Instead, the intimate, 30-room, upper-middle-range all-inclusive caters to guests who want to relax in a quiet location without constant attention. It lacks amenities such as a gym and spa but offers a laid-back vibe among lushly landscaped gardens. Guests hide out in air-conditioned, cottage-style rooms, snorkel the reefs from the lovely gold-sand beach, and lounge at the pool, where they can also mix their their own cocktails at the swim-up bar.

Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort
Labrelotte Bay, Saint Lucia

Set on a private stretch of beach along the calm waters of Labrelotte Bay on St. Lucia's northwest coast, the Windjammer is a 234-room, upper-middle-range resort with Mediterranean style and a slew of amenities that cater to equally to families and couples. The property offers six pools (two for kids), five restaurants, a spa, kids' programs, and a stellar water sports program that covers everything from snorkeling to sailing to diving. Rooms range from the standard 425-square-foot Ocean View Rooms to sprawling four-bedroom villas with full kitchens, expansive decks, and private pools. The property is set into a steep, terraced hillside with views of the Caribbean.

Mystique Royal St Lucia
Reduit Beach

This 95-suite upper-middle-range resort delivers on location -- it's steps from Reduit Beach and close to Rodney Bay Village. A stylish swim-up bar services a lagoon-style pool ringed by palm trees and cushy white loungers and day beds, which are spaced far enough apart for privacy. The resort offers three restaurants, but the most intimate is the Beach Shack, an open-air pavilion right on the beach. Some of the spacious suite-style rooms have terraces with dead-on views of the sea, but the rooms do show hints of wear and tear with scuffed floors and spots on the rugs.
