Paradise Holiday Village
154/9 Palangathurai

The 49-room Paradise Holiday Village is a lower-middle-range property set on a main road in Negombo, near dozens of restaurants and shops. Bare-bones rooms and public spaces suffer from dated and worn furnishings, plus there are cleanliness and maintenance issues throughout. However, it does have a few solid amenities and cheap rates that attract budget-minded travelers. Rooms include mini-fridges, TVs with some English-language channels, and suites add wet bars. The outdoor pool is surrounded by a lawn and loungers, and a free hot and cold buffet breakfast is served in the all-day restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Though not along the beach, the public waterfront can be reached in a quick five-minute walk. This hotel is one of the cheapest area options, but it's worth paying a bit more at the more modern Paradise Beach Hotel.

Pledge 3
No 03 Kattuwa Road

The 14-room, upper-middle-range Pledge 3 is a boutique property located on a side street near a main road lined with restaurants and shops, and a five-minute walk from Negombo Beach. Rooms are chic and modern, outfitted with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and kettles, but windows overlook the exterior hallways and hinder privacy. Features are limited to a courtyard with a lovely swimming pool, open-air restaurant and bar that serves top-notch local and international cuisine, and free Wi-Fi throughout. The quiet, relaxing ambience is better suited to couples, though low-key families are still frequent guests. If ocean views and wellness facilities are a must, check out Jetwing Sea, which has a furnished beachfront and rooftop spa.

Jetwing Blue
Porutota Road, Ethukale

Stretched out on Negombo's beige sand beach near the Colombo airport is this modern, upscale 112-room hotel and spa with history -- it was the brand's first of 22 properties (circa '72) and has grown considerably since then, with a major renovation completed in 2011. This particular Jetwing tends to attract business travelers, wedding attendees (the hotel has a ballroom that can fit up to 800 guests) and couples in transit. Restaurants include one with an open kitchen and impressive tasting menus; guests are also within walking distance to cafes and restaurants for more choice. Spacious and modernly simplistic rooms have bold blue-green tiles against crisp white linens, and a respectable eco-friendly mission, hence LED lights and solar panels. Vendors wander around the beach and sun loungers near the infinity pool, but they're a part of the local culture.

Jetwing Sea
Palangathurai, Ethukale

This relaxed mid-range hotel is located along a beige-sand beach in Negombo, near the Colombo airport. One of Jetwing’s 22 properties (all local-owned), the Sea is typically lower in price than sister properties nearby, and tends to attract leisure couples. Two restaurants include the main buffet with a wine cellar, as well as a romantic seafood option on the beach. Guests are within walking distance to cafes and restaurants for more choice. Modern rooms have central air-conditioning and balconies that face the ocean; the majority are Deluxe Rooms with more space, bathrobes, and jetted tubs. Vendors may wander around sun loungers at two outdoor pools (one that is infinity). Eco-friendly practices (a brand trait) include the use of solar power. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Dickman Resort
26/7 Poruthata Road, AK. Schnakenberg

The mid-range Dickman Resort is a stunningly designed, adult-only boutique located on a quiet street just a few minutes' walk to numerous restaurants and bars. This LGBT-friendly property has nine individually decorated rooms -- almost all of which are named after a color and have coordinating furnishings -- that feature minibars, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with DVD libraries, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Some are also equipped with furnished balconies or outdoor bathrooms. Facilities aren't extensive, but they do include a lovely freshwater pool, garden with plentiful seating, and a pool table by reception. A quality cooked-to-order breakfast is included in room rates, but the outdoor restaurant stops serving food in the early evening. This is easily one of the top hotels in the area, but if beach views are a necessity, consider the nearby Jetwing Beach.

Hotel Goldi Sands
Poruthota Road Ethukala, Negombo 11500 Sri Lanka

The 71-room Hotel Goldi Sands is a mid-range property with an excellent setting along the beach, near ample restaurants and a 25-minute drive from the airport. Rooms are simple but appealing, outfitted with flat-screen TVs, artwork, and mini-fridges, and many with sea-view balconies. However, some are showing a bit of wear and tear, and occasionally bathrooms have an unpleasant odor. Although there's no gym, facilities include a long outdoor pool with hot tub, a sandy area with wooden loungers facing the ocean, and a spa offering Ayurveda treatments. The well-reviewed restaurant and bar serves buffet-style meals, but not all rates include breakfast. Travelers looking for a more upscale stay may prefer the nearby Jetwing Blue.

Paradise Beach Hotel
289 Lewis Place

This clean and basic 66-room hotel along Negombo Beach is close to the airport and a good pick for those seeking budget accommodations in Sri Lanka. A variety of rooms and suites have balconies, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free bottled water. Bright colors and contemporary furnishings add pizzazz to the overall look, but bathrooms have outdated tiles. There's a standard buffet restaurant serving all three meals (breakfast is free), and a fun highlight is the Pirate Bar with authentic English pub decor. Manicured grounds lead to a public beach area -- sunsets are beautiful from here -- though most guests choose to plant themselves around the outdoor pool, which could use more lounge chairs.

Cantaloupe Levels
Bonavista Road, Rumassala

The upscale Cantaloupe Levels is a calm, boutique oasis with a chic design and panoramic views of the ocean. There's little in the immediate surrounds, but the beach is a 10-minute walk away and the attractions of Galle are roughly a 20-minute drive. The vibe is peaceful and intimate, particularly with just 9 rooms and suites. The stylish rooms have flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, and huge bathrooms with jetted tubs, plus most overlook the ocean. Local and Asian cuisine at the restaurant are delicious, while a sleek pool and spa offering massage treatments round out the facilities. Travelers looking to be right along the beach should consider CoCo Bay Unawatuna, which also has free yoga classes, a gym, and bar with daily happy hour.

The Frangipani Tree by Edwards Collection
812 Matara Road

Frangipani Tree is a small beachside boutique with nine suites that have a rustic, yet up-to-date, casual-chic vibe. Minimalist-style rooms are large with big outdoor bathrooms, polished concrete tile floors, and (tedious) door latches. Public space is slim, but includes a narrow pool, small dining area with a limited menu, tennis courts, grassy grounds, a small, unequipped beach area, and an unused TV and library lounge. Frangipani Tree is a place to unplug, so if you're looking for more than just a passive, disconnected type of holiday, you may want to venture further into the towns.

Flower Garden Hotel
14 Wella Dewalaya Road

This mid-range, budget-friendly boutique packs 53 rooms across two property lots, and features four restaurant spaces sharing the same menu, two pools, a jewelry store, and both wild jungle and landscaped grounds. It is about a 10-minute walk to the beach in one direction and the same distance to the town's main road in the other. Mostly filled with families and older couples, the property is characterized by a few stray dogs, lingering employees, a small (and hot) gym, and a great disparity between the lowest and highest of the nine categories of rooms. This is a relaxing, quiet spot that's ideal for anyone on a budget (or with a pet).
