Tomir Portals Suites
Calle Miguel de Cervantes 4

This shabby, but clean, hotel with severely outdated rooms is one of the only budget options in Portals Nous. Slightly saggy mattresses, ancient TVs, and blonde lacquer wood furniture that wouldn’t look out of place in a hostel make for somewhat gloomy rooms, though some have nice views of the water. All rooms have a kitchenette including an electric stovetop with a double burner, and a small concrete balcony. There are a handful of recreation options for both kids and adults in the form of game areas, and the outdoor pool is lovely. Full- and half-board meal plans are available. Those with a little more room in their budget may want to consider the nicer Salles Hotel Marina Portals.

Salles Hotel Marina Portals
Carretera Andratx S/N, KM 10

Salles Hotel Marina Portals is an upscale resort set into the hillside in the relaxed and relatively posh resort of Portals Nous. While the surroundings are pleasant and quiet, it's a 10-minute walk to the beach. Renovations of all 188 guest rooms were completed in 2015, resulting in a chic, modern look. They have flat-screen TVs and minibars, and all furnished balconies face the gardens -- some also have glimpses of the sea. Various dining options offer decent food from buffet to tapas, and poolside bars provide lounger-side service. The atmospheric spa offering body treatments and aromatic showers is a real highlight, though lack of mini-club or activities program might mean bored kids. For this reason, families might prefer the more child-focused Hotel HSM Maria Luisa nearby, which is also closer to the beach.

Portals Hills Boutique Hotel
Calle Segui 4

Portals Hills is a glitzy and glamorous, luxury boutique hotel set in the hills overlooking the upmarket town of Portals Nous. Its secluded setting and Miami-inspired vibe attracts the international yachting set as well as the occasional celeb. The 31 immaculate rooms feature high-end amenities such as 40-inch TVs and 24-hour room service, and all have balconies with distant sea views. Though expensive, dining is excellent, and the hotel's bar is a genuinely hip local nightspot. Spa and leisure facilities are minimal, though an infinity pool provides a scenic spot to cool off with a drink. Overall it's one of the choicest boutique hotel experiences on the island, and with eye-watering rates to match; a similar vibe can be found at Puro Hotel in central Palma for almost half the price.

OD Talamanca
Calle de Jesus 28

This four-pearl hotel located on a quiet hill in Talamanca was rebuilt from the ground up, and opened its doors in May 2017 showcasing superb design and attention to detail. The 117 guest rooms are large and modern, with super-cold AC, free minibars, and balconies. Extra perks for higher category units include free Smart cars and airport transfers, plus private kitchens and rooftop pools. While this isn't a resort property, there are three chic pools, a trellised outdoor terrace, sleek lobby bar, rotating weekly events, and a small but high-tech gym. Freebies include Wi-Fi throughout, a great breakfast buffet, and valet parking. There's nothing quite like OD Talamanca in the area, but if it's booked up, check rates at the El Hotel Pacha.

Hotel Lux Isla
Calle Josep Pla 1

The 33-room mid-range Hotel Luz Isla is a good value, ideal for anyone looking for a no-fuss, quiet spot with contemporary rooms and walking proximity to the waterfront. It's one of the older hotels in the area, but thanks to frequent updates, rooms are up-to-date and attractive. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and AC, plus balconies in most. This property sees a ton of repeat guests that are known on a first-name basis, speaking to the high level of hospitality. Outside of a small TV lounge, public spaces consist of a breakfast room serving free buffets and an attached corner cafe with bar and terrace seating. The lack of a pool is a downside for families with young kids (try the nearby Sinbad Hotel for a pool). Wi-FI is free, while parking is available for a fee.

Hotel Ses Figueres
Calle Figueres 18

Hotel Ses Figueres is a mid-range, dated property located across from the Talamanca marina. There's no denying that the 39 guest rooms here are basic and old-fashioned, though they are reliably clean and in good shape. Flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, AC, and mini-fridges come standard, and some rooms have balconies with pleasant water views. The on-site restaurant and bar serves simple fair at good prices and offers great views of the marina. There's also a concrete sundeck with free loungers on the marina. Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, and a small lounge with books and a TV complete features. It's worth noting that finding street parking can be a pain in high season. For a simple but free breakfast buffet, as well as parking and modern rooms, it's worth comparing rates at the nearby Hotel Lux Isla, though you'll lose the waterfront location.

OD Ocean Drive
Port Deportivo Marina Botafoch, s/n

The three-and-a-half-pearl OD Ocean Drive is a boutique property that is thin on public space but heavy on the details. Designed to reflect the Art-Deco style of Miami's South Beach and 1920s Manhattan, this compact property is full of great style inside and out. The 40 handsome rooms run on the small side, but come with free minibar items, bathrobes, rainfall showers, and fresh fruit, plus most have balconies with pleasant views. Suites pack a punch with extras like a free smart car and airport pickup. In summer, the hotel hosts frequent parties an the rooftop Sky Bar and serves breakfast until late, while winter sees a calmer crowd. Expect free Wi-Fi, gorgeous marina-facing views, and access to the pools at the adult-only OD Talamanca up the street. Unfortunately, limited parking and noisy hallways are also present.

Simbad Hotel
Calle Figueres 22, Playa de Talamanca

The 111-room Simbad Hotel is a three-pearl property set on the waterfront overlooking the north end of Ibiza's Talamanca Bay. The surrounding area is generally quiet and relaxed -- a far cry from the bustle of Ibiza Town a 10-minute drive away. Public spaces are mostly modern, though rooms -- with blue patterned bedspreads and matching curtains -- remain on the dated side. Nonetheless, it's all about the sea views here, and half of the rooms, the restaurant, and the outdoor pool all overlook the water. Those preferring to be a little closer to town and with direct beach access should take a look at Hotel Argos on the south side of the bay.

Hotel Argos
Talamanca Beach, Playa de Talamanca

Hotel Argos is a 106-room, upper-middle-range property set overlooking a sandy beach on the western end of Talamanca Bay. While the immediate area is relatively serene, it's just a short stroll to plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as the buzzing party area. Renovations in 2016 gave the rooms a contemporary, white-filled design, plus they all have furnished balconies -- the majority featuring sea views. A choice of indoor and outdoor pools are welcome amenities, as is direct beach access -- though expect some seaweed. All in all, it's a good balance of setting and facilities, although to be closer to the action travelers might want to consider Sirenis Hotel Club Tres Carabelas & Spa.

Hotel Aiguablava
Platja de Fornells s/n

Hotel Aigua Blava is an 85-room, mid-range hotel located on a rocky hillside overlooking Aiguablava Bay. The property features many on-site activities -- including tennis courts, several bars, a playground, and a small fitness center -- but the highlights here are the tasty (but pricey) restaurant, and the saltwater pool, both offering great ocean views. Rooms are nice enough overall, with large windows and solid amenities such as flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. A few, however, are a tad dated and bland. The location -- within walking distance of two small beaches and a short drive to several historic towns -- makes it a good pick for beach-goers and culture buffs alike.
