H10 Metropolitan

The 85-room H10 Metropolitan is an upscale hotel with an outstanding in Barcelona's posh Eixample, just a half-block from Plaza Catalunya. Barri Gotic and El Raval are within an easy walk, and there are shops and restaurants in every direction. Compact rooms have a fresh vintage-contemporary look and some offer private outdoor spaces with lounge chairs. Two outdoor pools include one on the rooftop with views of the city, plus a courtyard pool with a bar for drinks and light fare. An excellent breakfast buffet is served, but it's quite expensive, and dining is limited to light fare in the hotel's Eden Bar. For a similarly priced hip hotel, travelers could check out the sexy, LGBT-friendly Axel Hotel Barcelona, which has a spa.

Casa Marcelo Barcelona
2 Carrer de Rera Palau Ciutat Vella Barcelona

Tucked away on a pedestrian street in Barcelona’s hip El Born district, the five rooms at the budget-friendly Casa Marcelo Barcelona exude early 20th-century charm -- though note that only two have private bathrooms. Amazing shopping is just outside the hotel’s door while the Picasso Museum and the Barceloneta Metro station can be reached in less than 10 minutes on foot. Breakfast can be a bit light, but guests have access to the kitchen to store or prepare additional meals, and the shared balcony is a lovely place to relax and watch the street scene below. Those would prefer to stay in Eixample should consider the comparable Ana's Guest House B&B.

Hotel Paral·lel

Hotel Paral.lel, is a two-pearl boutique hotel in the once gritty but now hip enclave of Poble Sec, a neighborhood located between the bustling Avenida del Para-lel and Montjuic. It is a two-minute walk to the metro and funicular and 10 minutes to the waterfront. The sleek, contemporary, property has 64 rooms, some with terraces and good natural light. While guests report wishing the walls were thicker and the rooms had blackout drapes and kettles, they praise the design and tidiness of the hotel. A generous buffet breakfast is served for a fee, and the lobby provides free newspapers. For a property off Las Ramblas, travelers might want to check out the budget Hotel Curious, which also has an on-site massage treatment room.

H10 Art Gallery

The 91-room H10 Art Gallery is an upscale boutique property that incorporates the work of seven modern artists. The Eixample address is hard to beat -- it's nicely positioned for exploring Barcelona on foot, or taking the metro to places farther out. Rooms are stylish and fresh, with furnished balconies in some rooms, and each highlights the work of a particular artist. The on-site restaurant and bar are modern and chic, and the rooftop pool is a relaxing place to enjoy city views. For a similar-sized property in the Eixample district, check out the Alma Barcelona, which has a large indoor pool.

Hotel Zenit Borrell

This small, contemporary hotel may be better suited for business travelers, due to its location near the city's financial district and its limited amenities. The hotel offers a full-service restaurant that serves breakfast and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as a bar with lounge space and an outdoor terrace with dining area. However, the property lacks a fitness center and pool. The hotel houses 74 rooms, which are decorated in a contemporary fashion typical of the Zenit brand: wood floors, striped wallpaper, and wood furnishings. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, pillow menus, and minibars -- some rooms have unfurnished balconies overlooking the street below. Guests traveling for business may appreciate the four meeting rooms and free Wi-Fi throughout.

Hesperia Barcelona Presidente

Hesperia Presidente Hotel is a three-pearl property located in Barcelona's popular Eixample neighborhood, near many of Gaudi's most celebrated architectural masterpieces. The 71 rooms here are uniformly unmatched. Many room configurations sleep up to three guests, making them a good choice for families. Bathrooms are particularly noteworthy thanks to jetted walk-in rainfall showers. Facilities include eight meeting rooms (the largest of which can host banquets for up to 220 people), a well-equipped fitness center that looks out on a sunbathing deck, a breakfast buffet, a restaurant, and a bar serving tapas throughout the day. The only major drawback of this hotel is its absence of a pool. Travelers for whom this is a deal breaker should consider the nearby Hotel Catalonia Passeig de Gracia instead, though rates are higher.

Renaissance Barcelona Hotel

The 211-room Renaissance Barcelona Hotel is an upscale property in Barcelona's posh Eixample, close to high-end shopping on Passeig de Gracia, as well as Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas. Rooms are contemporary and chic, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and high-end coffeemakers. Some have balconies with nice city views. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi isn't free and bathrooms aren't exactly luxurious (despite nice products). The rooftop bar and terrace also offers beautiful city views in nice weather, and the two restaurants and lobby bar are open year-round. The spa and modern fitness center are other pluses, though the rooftop pool is tiny. As an alternative, the nearby NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderon is a similar property and it doesn't charge a fee for Wi-Fi, but it lacks a spa.

Hotel Constanza Barcelona

This 46-room value hotel combines modern comforts with classic European touches, such as French balconies that overlook a quiet street in the Eixample district. The Hotel Constanza prides itself on providing a hip atmosphere: communal areas have low lighting and stylish decor. The earthy color palette and modern vibe extend to the guest rooms, which offer updated amenities and spacious bathrooms with sleek, minimalist fixtures. Some rooms are a bit on the dark side, though, as ones in the rear of the hotel may face a brick wall. A highlight is the seasonal rooftop terrace with city views, although it is only open during warmer months.

Sallés Hotel Pere IV
Pallars 128 - 130

The 195-room Salles Hotel Pere IV is a mid-range property located in a residential part of Poblenou, far from the tourist sights, but close to metro and train stations. Its rooms feature colorful, classic decor and offer air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The spa is small, but it offers a little indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and special showers. There's also a fitness center, and the business center provides computers and a printer. This place is looking a little dated, and the restaurant gets mixed reviews at best, but it's a reasonable value for the area. Travelers wanting to be closer to more action could check out the Condado Hotel, a more modern boutique in the Eixample that has similar rates but fewer features.

Barcelona Centro
Barcelona

Location is the big draw at the NH Duc de la Victoria, as this 156-room hotel sits in the city's popular Gothic Quarter, which is filled with restaurants, shops, and landmark buildings. Rooms are a bit generic, but offer contemporary furnishings, flat-screen TVs, and stocked minibars. Some have small balconies and all have soundproof windows. A breakfast buffet is served daily, which is standard for the NH brand, but the property lacks a full restaurant. Cocktails are served in the lounge, but the lively neighborhood is full of more authentic bars within walking distance. Those guests seeking a rooftop terrace and pool should check out nearby sister property NH Calderon.
