Vineyard Hotel
60 Colinton Road

Set along the Liesbeek River, the Vineyard Hotel is known for its historic charm and esteemed restaurants. Its sprawling garden grounds are planted with grape vines that actively supply several local wineries. Far from downtown and the waterfront, the property is in a pleasant residential area and most of its rooms are large and luxurious with extras like espresso machines. Still, beware of older rooms that haven’t been updated. Like at so many hotels in Cape Town, Wi-Fi is limited to a daily allotment, but breakfast and wonderful views of Table Mountain are free.

The Commodore
Portwood Rd, Portswood Square, V & A Waterfront

The 236-room Commodore is a pleasant enough, but slightly dated upper-middle-range hotel located in the V&A Waterfront area of Cape Town, a few minutes' walk from the quayside. Decor has a maritime theme throughout, which may not appeal to all, and there's not a great deal to get excited about beyond Table Mountain views in some rooms. Rooms are mostly adequate, however, with all amenities present and correct for this category -- though beware there is limited Wi-Fi. All in all it's a solid choice for those who like their hotels traditional and want to stay near the bustling harbor. It's usually significantly more affordable than its luxurious neighbors, but those who prefer a city center location should consider a boutique stay at the similarly priced Cape Heritage Hotel.

Lawhill Luxury Apartments
Dock Road Bluff, Marina Residential

Overlooking the canal on the bustling waterfront, Lawhill Luxury Apartments are all about posh living with everything a traveler could want in an upscale hotel room -- but little else. It's more of an upmarket condo building that lacks the usual hotel facilities, save an outdoor pool. The full kitchens, large living rooms, and private balconies are well-suited to families and couples on long stays who like cooking for themselves. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of the amenities at the more expensive One&Only Cape Town hotel. For travelers wishing to experience that property’s celebrity eateries, staying at the Lawhill is a cost-saving alternative.

Victoria & Alfred Hotel
On the Waterfront Pierhead

The Victoria and Alfred Hotel is a fairly upscale, 94-room property set in a shopping complex overlooking Cape Town's harbor. Its bustling quayside location is a pleasant setting for the hotel's restaurant overlooking the water. Modern rooms have either water views or look out at the iconic outline of Table Mountain. Although some rooms are showing signs of wear, bathrooms are all smart and contemporary with walk-in showers and separate soaking tubs. There is access to an outdoor pool plus a fitness center and seafood restaurant are on-site. Rates are a bit high compared to similar options downtown, but they're probably the lowest you'll find for a hotel right on the water. Check out the nearby Commodore or PortsWood hotels for cheaper, but off the waterfront, rates.

Blackheath Lodge
6 Blackheath Road, Sea Point

The Blackheath Lodge is a 12-room boutique property in a Victorian house, a 10 minutes' drive from the center of Cape Town. This upscale hotel, set between Signal Hill and the waterfront, is close to beaches and the city, and it's within walking distance of cafes and restaurants. Guest rooms have lovely wood balconies and whimsically sophisticated decor, which extends to the common areas. The hotel serves a free breakfast on a terrace beside a cozy garden and pool, and the extremely helpful staff offers travel and restaurant tips. Special touches throughout -- board games in the sun room, blue and white dishes, colorful wall art, dripping chandeliers -- further the personalized experience. Guests who want to be in the city center could try the Rouge on Rose, a boutique B&B.

Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Cape Town
100 Beach Road, Granger Bay

This Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Cape Town is a 177-room luxury hotel with a smart, contemporary vibe and prime setting overlooking the sea. There's not much in the immediate vicinity, but the V&A Waterfront tourist hub is walkable or accessible via a free shuttle. Facilities and service are good, though not perfect, and the pool is a little small -- though views are superb. Ocean vistas from rooms are impressive too, though you have to upgrade for the privilege. Rates unsurprisingly aren't cheap for this high-end hotel and without a sea-view room it might feel too steep, so consider a Superior Room or higher for the full experience.

POD Camps Bay
3 Argyle Street

The POD Camps Bay is a 15-room luxury hotel with a chic, minimalist style employing natural wood, gray stone, and glass. Set in an upscale residential area a few minutes' walk from Camps Bay Beach, the property is a 10-minute drive from the center of Cape Town. Rooms have a natural aesthetic and views of the beach or mountains; most have balconies, and some have private pools. The rooftop pool has ocean views, and there's a bar offering poolside drink service. Breakfast is free and includes daily specials, and minibars are restocked daily with free goodies. This eco-friendly hotel draws younger couples, and is a more modern alternative to the area's Victorian-style B&Bs.

Parker Cottage
3 Carstens Street

This small, upscale boutique hotel is in a quiet, residential area that's within a 15-minute walk of downtown attractions. The owners and staff offer personalized service for their guests and are always more than happy to recommend and book trips, tours, restaurants, and taxis. Each room is individually designed to have a luxurious but homey feel, though TVs and radios are only provided upon request. There’s no swimming pool or spa (both of which can be found at 2Inn1), but there are thoughtful extras such as wine tasting evenings and an exceptional (included) five-course breakfast.

DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town - Upper Eastside
31 Brickfield Road

A business hotel with a chic interior design, this DoubleTree hosts constant meetings and conferences in Cape Town's Upper Eastside. The rooms are modern and have work desks with ergonomic roller chairs. The location is convenient to reaching the downtown area, business district, and airport by car, making it a reasonable choice for business travelers, but there's nothing within walking distance for tourists. And the neighborhood isn't considered safe at night. However, the rates are more reasonable than hotels along the waterfront, and the DoubleTree has a free shuttle that takes guests there.

Pepperclub Hotel
Cnr Loop and Pepper Street

Pepperclub Hotel is a luxury property with lavish amenities and indulgent decor. The rooms range from swanky studios with kitchenettes to extravagant suites with outdoor pools. The restaurant and bar have a classy vibe, and breakfast is included in room rates. Though right in the city center, the hotel includes a private club on the popular Camps Bay beach front, with guests shuttled there for free. Some visitors may wish to stay there, however, instead of returning to the the Pepperclub which is located in a loud part of town that's not always safe at night.
