SureStay Hotel by Best Western Santa Monica
3102 Pico Boulevard

In a trendy part of town with a lot of four- and five-pearl hotels, the SureStay Hotel by Best Western Santa Monica offers a budget-friendly alternative. There's a variety of rooms available, including some with whirlpool tubs and kitchenettes. The hotel also provides free breakfast, (occasionally unreliable) free Wi-Fi, and parking, and pets are allowed in some rooms for a fee. A business center and an internal courtyard with picnic seating and barbecues are added perks, but there's no gym or pool.

Sea Shore Motel
2637 Main St

The 25-room budget Sea Shore Motel is on historic Main Street in the heart of Santa Monica, and within a five-minute walk of the beach, restaurants, shops, coffee houses, a farmers' market, art galleries, and small museums. Rooms have terra-cotta tile and European shutters, and include mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and tube-style TVs. Deluxe Suites include fully equipped kitchens, flat-screen TVs, and balconies with seating. Free Wi-Fi and parking are available. There's a rooftop sundeck with seating, and Amelia’s, the on-site cafe, is a favorite local haunt.

Ocean View Hotel
1447 Ocean Avenue

The 66-room upper-middle-range Ocean View Hotel is across the street from the beach, and within easy walking distance of Santa Monica Pier, the Third Street Promenade, and several renowned restaurants along Ocean Avenue. A family-owned, eco-conscious boutique hotel, the Ocean View has a beachy ambience and stylish rooms -- some have furnished balconies and ocean views. The 24-hour business center has an Apple computer and a device-charging station. Travelers might also want to check out the Shore Hotel, which is located just down the street, operated by the same family, and equally "green."

Rest Haven Motel
815 Grant St

The 14-room Rest Haven Motel is a budget property on a quiet street at busy -- and gritty -- Lincoln Boulevard and Grant Street in Santa Monica, with the beach, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. Built in 1938, the motel nostalgically evokes an earlier time. Rooms are quaintly decorated with pine-knotted furniture, hooked area rugs, and inspirational wall hangings, and include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, safes, and ceiling fans, but no air-conditioning, king-size beds, or coffeemakers. Free Wi-Fi and parking are available, along with daily housekeeping. The hotel has no lobby, but there is a delightful backyard courtyard with seating and pretty flowers, where guests can gather.

Wyndham Santa Monica at the Pier
120 Colorado Ave

This upper-middle-range Wyndham is ideally located for family-friendly activities at the Santa Monica Pier. Guests can walk to the Pier, the beach, numerous shopping spots, and a variety of eateries, and reach Venice Beach in about 15 minutes by bike. The modern lobby is looking fresh following a 2014-2015 renovation, and it has a new open-concept restaurant and bar. The 132 rooms also look fresh, and the heated outdoor pool is a plus. Because its location is so convenient, however, the hotel is a bit pricey, as is its valet parking. Another nearby option is the Ocean View Hotel, which is significantly less expensive, as it's located across the street from the beach.

Seaview Hotel
1760 Ocean Ave

Location and price are the two best features of the budget Seaview Hotel. This small Art Deco-style motor hotel from the 1950s is located a block away from the beach and a short walk to the Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade. Rooms have some of the lowest prices in the area and have a certain retro charm. But you get what you pay for -- rooms are furnished plainly, don't come equipped with air-conditioning, and the walls are so thin that you can hear guests in other rooms. (Light sleepers may want to bring earplugs.) The property does have a few lovely features, including a rooftop sundeck, manicured grounds full of plants, and an open-air courtyard. Wi-Fi and parking are both free. Overall, this is a solid pick for guests seeking an affordable, centrally located hotel that don't mind some noise.

Oceana
849 Ocean Ave

Small, intimate, and beautiful, this Santa Monica boutique hotel more than compensates for its lack of on-site features -- no spa, a long walk to the beach -- with a welcoming atmosphere cultivated by personal service and elegant design and ample amenities (50-inch flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, Frette sheets) in its 70 rooms, which, starting at 450 square feet, are some of the biggest in the area. Plus, Oceana Beach Club has a relaxed, low-key vibe unmatched by its luxury rivals Fairmont Miramar, Shutters on the Beach, and Hotel Casa Del Mar.
