Casa Costa Azul Boutique Hotel
Carretera Transpeninsular Cabo San Lucas - San Jose del Cabo Km 28.5

Casa Costa Azul is a 14-room boutique hotel with tons of charm on one of Los Cabos' few swimmable beaches. This hotel is ready-made for kicking back -- hammocks are strung between palm trees, and there's a sleek pool deck, a yoga studio, and an excellent homey restaurant. This family-run property's rooms are individually designed, with rustic hardwood furniture, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and bathrooms covered in vibrant Mexican tilework. All rooms have at least partial sea views from terraces. There is a highway behind the hotel that's a bit noisy, but the surf is the loudest sound at night. It'll be hard to top the charm here, however, those searching for something closer to foodie bars and restaurants could check out Tropicana Inn, right in San Jose.

Casa Natalia
Boulevard Antonio Mijares 4, In the heart of the Historic Downtown

Casa Natalia is a gorgeously executed 16-room boutique in downtown San Jose del Cabo. Everything from the quaint lobby with original artwork to the on-site restaurant has charming local flair. Even standard rooms are spacious, with living rooms and balconies featuring hammocks (though the tube TVs are one notable drawback). The only way to beat the heat on-site is an attractive but small and walled-in pool area, but the beach is only a short drive away. Book here if you want romantic seclusion -- but if a beachfront party spot is more your speed, consider the slightly pricier options in the nearby hotel zone.

Barcelo Gran Faro Los Cabos
Blvd. San Jose S/n, Seccion Hotelera 1 Zona Fonatur

This 350-room beachfront property on the Sea of Cortez is an affordable all-inclusive resort for families and adults alike. It’s a big property with a great layout consisting of three sections of rooms wrapped around three pools (one with a swim-up bar) and facing a huge beach. Thank goodness for those pools, too, as swimming in the sea is often too dangerous due to the strong current. Long walks along the shore, however, are not to be missed. Renovated rooms are pretty basic but have balconies, rain shower heads, and minibars stocked with free items. There are two buffets and three a la carte restaurants (with restrictions), and a sky bar with some of the best views in town. More dining and shopping can be found a few miles away in the historic district of San José del Cabo. Expect an upgrade pitch when checking in.

Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos All-Inclusive
Blvd Mijares S/N, Zona Hotelera

This reliable, mid-range all-inclusive resort has 390 rooms and sits along the water at the very end of San Jose del Cabo's Hotel Row. It has a massive beach but it's unfortunately not swimmable -- as is the case for all hotels on this coast because riptides are too dangerous. Still, solid property features include three pools (one of which is adult-only), two modern restaurants, and six bars spread out to avoid overcrowding. Though their decor is a bit bland, air-conditioned rooms have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and balconies, and some first-floor units have hammocks. There are also tennis, basketball, and a 24-hour fitness center. Those who wish to be closer to Cabo San Lucas and have more resort entertainment should consider Villa del Palmar

Marquis Los Cabos All-Inclusive Resort & Spa
Carretera Transpeninsular km 21.5, Fracc. Cabo Real

The luxury Marquis Los Cabos All Inclusive Resort & Spa is conveniently situated on The Corridor, the main road running between Los Cabos International Airport and Cabo San Lucas, and beachfront to Costa Azul -- though the beach can be too rough for swimming. With three pools, several restaurant choices, a full-service spa, chic bar, and 24-hour room service, this is a great choice for couples who want an adult-only experience. However, Canto del Mar costs extra and some of the specialty restaurants have limited hours. The 235 rooms are spacious and luxurious with L’Occitane bath products and ocean view balconies -- some suites have private pools. Coffee is delivered to the rooms every morning. Those looking for a swimmable beach and lower rates should check out ME Cabo by Melia, a more lively option geared towards adults.

Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort
Ctra Transpeninsular Km.19.5

Las Ventanas al Paraiso is one of the most luxurious resorts in Mexico. The service is impeccable -- you won't go more than a few feet without finding staff who can help you, guide you, or answer any questions you might have. That level of attention is complemented by the resort's features, including a spa, gourmet dining, butlers for all guests, and spacious rooms tricked out in gorgeous traditional decor. This is the kind of place you come to be spoiled, and romance abounds. The beach bar, with its dramatic fire pit, is a swoon-worthy spot at night, while the pools that form the heart of the property make a dramatic visual statement. If you're looking for equally attentive service with a slightly more modern vibe, check out One&Only Palmilla instead.

Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort
Carretera Transpeninsular Km. 19.5

The Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort is a family-friendly upper-middle range property that has broad appeal for travelers seeking sun, surf, and a lively vibe. That's matched by numerous features, including great beach-view pools, a spa, gym, free kids' club and activities, and six bars, restaurants, and cafes. The 375 rooms have attractive modern Mexican decor, plus terraces that look out across the resort and -- in many cases -- to the sea. The vibe can feel a bit impersonal, and we found standard services like being escorted to your room by a porter or welcome drinks to be uneven. Even so, the Hilton Los Cabos is popular with families, groups of friends, and destination events. If you'd like a more polished resort, check out the JW Marriott Los Cabos on the other side of San Jose del Cabo.

One&Only Palmilla
Km 7.5 Carr. Transpeninsular

One&Only Palmilla is easily one of Mexico's most luxurious properties. The velvet-gloved treatment includes personal concierges, butlers, aromatherapy turndown service, and some of Cabo's best dining. The 173 rooms and villas blend classic Mexican design with contemporary accents like Venetian stucco and walls of windows to create bright, elegant spaces. All have terraces, many with direct ocean views, and some include private pools. Dining includes Asian-Mexican fusion and Mediterranean options, plus a steak house by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The resort has one of the area's only swimmable beaches, an elegant spa, and two gorgeous pools, all of which are hard to top -- the manicured-jungle setting doesn't hurt either. Esperanza, An Auberge Resort is the closest competition. It has a more intimate vibe, though isn't as seamlessly luxurious.

Alegranza
Calle Paseo Las Misiones 927, Colonia Club de Golf Fonatur

Far removed from the party atmosphere of Cabos San Lucas, this upscale property is comprised of 95 residences on beautifully landscaped grounds that include pools, putting greens, fire pits, a fitness center, tennis court, and restaurant. Units are spacious, with large living rooms, full kitchens, and private yards or patios. Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias is part-owner of this quiet and well-kept property, mostly frequented by couples and families on long vacations. It is a 15-minute hike from the beach, which has rougher waves than the southern shores. Families hoping to be near calmer waters may consider Villa la Estancia, which also offers large rooms and is right on tranquil Medano Beach.

Tropicana Inn
Boulevard Antonio Mijares No 30, Col. Centro

With just 39 rooms, the quaint two-and-a-half-pearl Tropicana Inn fits right in in charming San Jose del Cabo. The location is enviable -- right near the town's main plaza and a short walk from dozens of galleries and cafes. The hotel also has one of the most popular restaurants in town, with live music and dinner shows regularly in high season. Rooms are simple but pleasant, with a blend of rustic and more elegant details, though some -- like the Gardenia Suite -- are more upmarket than others. The hotel has a lovely courtyard swimming pool, swim-up bar, and romantic Cabana Troje can be booked for those celebrating special occasions. For a boutique stay on the beach instead, check out Casa Costa Azul, though it's farther from the town center.
