Harbourview Inn
2 Vendue Range

Harbour View Inn is a historic landmark, and the only waterfront hotel downtown. Original structural elements such as brick walls have been preserved, and the rooms have southern style (four-poster beds and white quilted coverlets). A gorgeous rooftop offers some of the city's best harbor views, and tons of shops, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance. Free extras such as breakfast, Wi-Fi, weekly skyline tours, and treats throughout the day add value, but the hotel lacks a fitness center, pool, and restaurant.

Indigo Inn
1 Maiden Ln

Indigo Inn is a quaint budget-friendly inn situated in the heart of historic Charleston. Its two biggest selling points are its location and reasonable prices, though the 40 small rooms are pleasant enough, with old-fashioned decor items such as four-poster beds, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel doesn't offer much in terms of amenities, though there is a free hot breakfast and a free afternoon service of wine and cheese, plus luggage storage, a picturesque courtyard, and parking (for a fee). Overall, it's a decent budget choice for those who don't need a lot of extra bells and whistles, but there are better options in the area, such as the slightly pricier Jasmine House Inn, which occupies a restored mansion.

Island Vista
6000 North Ocean Blvd.

The upper-middle-range Island Vista Resort is a 12-story property with a quiet beachfront location north of Myrtle Beach. While its location is away from the main action, there are a handful of casual dining options within a 10-minute walk. The 171 rooms and suites are spacious and come with kitchenettes, private balconies, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel's main restaurant, Cypress Room, is open for breakfasts and dinners, though neither are included in room rates. There's also a more casual poolside Tiki Bar, open for lunches, dinners, and cocktails. The three pools (indoor and outdoor), lazy river, kids' pools, and hot tubs keep guests busy throughout the day. Additional features include a fitness center, massage services, and a ballroom. Travelers looking for a more central location can also consider Landmark Resort, which offers more water and dining facilities.

Montage Palmetto Bluff
477 Mount Pelia Rd

This sprawling estate in Carolina Lowcountry provides a one-of-a-kind experience that uniquely blends southern history and almost otherworldly natural beauty: rivers, misty marshes, old oaks draped with wispy Spanish moss, and salty breezes. The main hotel building looks like a classic southern mansion, and the 50 Cottages and Cottage Suites are simultaneously homey and utterly luxurious, with working fireplaces, screen porches, and gorgeous bathrooms. The multi-bedroom Village Homes are also luxurious, but lack some of the nuances of the cottages. Guests can enjoy a range of recreational facilities, including golf, bicycling, tennis, croquet, kayaking, and swimming (in the two pools), and the luxury spa is highly acclaimed. It's not an overstatement to say that the Montage Palmetto Bluff is one of the most special properties in the entire country.

Dunes Village Resort
5200 North Ocean Boulevard

Designed to appeal to kids and families, Dunes Village Resort is a 456-room, mid-range hotel on a wide stretch of beach with activities such as four water slides, a pirate ship-style playground, lazy river, indoor and outdoor pools, and lots of games. It’s located directly on Myrtle Beach and priced similarly to other nearby family-friendly properties, but decor and furnishings in the rooms (most with full kitchens and ocean-view balconies) could use an update, and the property charges a mandatory resort fee.

Captains Quarters Resort
901 S Ocean Blvd

Captain's Quarters Resort is like many of the mid-range family-friendly hotels along Ocean Boulevard -- rooms are a bit worn, but the beachfront location is a highlight. Another top draw here are the numerous pools, including both indoor and outdoor options, two lazy rivers, hot tubs, and a kids' pool with a pirate ship. There's also a large entertainment center with a 20-lane bowling alley and arcade games. Dining options include casual fare and drinks as well as a seasonal beach shack. As mentioned, guest rooms are dated and worn, plus past guests have complained of cleanliness issues, but rooms come with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Suites add kitchenettes with stoves/ovens. For something more modern and with nicer decor, check out the Island Vista Resort, but note that rates are a bit more expensive.

Planters Inn
112 N Market St

The small, upper-middle-range Planters Inn is an authentic way to experience the Historic District; the inn's 60 rooms are decidedly Savannah, with details such as four-poster beds, floral prints, and dark-wood accents. Some rooms even have cozy fireplaces and shared furnished balconies. Some of the "charm", though, means somewhat dated, with complaints of old mattresses and some wear and tear throughout. A simple continental breakfast is served on-site every morning free of charge, and the hotel’s renowned Olde Pink House Restaurant is located across the street. There are few amenities here, but freebies such as wine and cheese receptions, warm cookies, and Wi-Fi are great perks that add value. For something cheaper in the area, consider the Holiday Inn Express Savannah – Historic District

Sea Watch Resort
161 Seawatch Dr

The mid-range Sea Watch Resort consists of two gated towers on North Myrtle Beach, a five-minute drive from Tanger Outlets. The 275 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos are individually owned, so decor and maintenance varies, but all have full kitchens and ocean views. Families love the six oceanfront pools, 10 whirlpools, and two lazy rivers. Captain's Cove serves a hot buffet breakfast (not included) and casual a la carte items. There's also an oceanfront tiki bar and a coffee shop with gourmet coffee drinks and to-go snacks. Entertainment includes a poolside DJ and family movie nights, but some features are seasonal. This place is definitely oriented towards families, so couples may want to check out the upscale North Beach Plantation House -- though rates are higher.

Marina Inn at Grande Dunes
8121 Amalfi Place

The upper-middle-range Marina Inn at Grande Dunes is a large hotel set on the lush grounds of the Grande Dunes Resort. It's located on the outskirts of Myrtle Beach with little within walking distance -- the beach is a five-minute drive (the hotel offers a free shuttle). The 200 guest rooms are spacious and come with mini-fridges, microwaves, private balconies, and free Wi-Fi. Three main dining facilities are available, along with seasonal beach and pool bars. There is both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool along with two hot tubs, a nice fitness center, and a sauna. Breakfast is not included in room rates and there's a daily resort fee. Travelers looking for a beachfront location can compare rates at the Anderson Ocean Club and Spa, with similar features.

Hotel On Market
35 Hayne Street

The Doubletree by Hilton features rooms outfitted in golds, reds, and greens, with dark wood accents and draped curtains. Some may find the decor somewhat dated and stuffy, but the hotel has a more luxurious feel than other chain hotels, especially in the lobby, which is bedecked with chandeliers and high archways. The basement fitness center and the quiet courtyard are nice features, and the historic downtown location is a highlight, but families may want to consider the nearby Embassy Suites, which has a pool and free Wi-Fi.
