Radisson Hotel Bloomington by Mall of America
2100 Killebrew Drive

With its Water Park of America, the largest indoor water park in Minnesota, the Radisson Hotel Bloomington naturally appeals to vacationing families; that the Mall of America is just a free, five-minute shuttle ride away only sweetens the deal. Its 403 rooms and suites cater to families -- many have bunk beds and sofa beds -- and features include a fitness center, on-site spa, and three restaurants. Those who want to have easy access to downtown Minneapolis should look to stay closer to the city center, as it's a 15- to 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Mystic Lake Casino Hotel
2400 Mystic Lake Blvd

The Mystic Lake Casino Hotel is one of the largest hotels in the Twin Cities, with 586 rooms, 10 bars and restaurants, a comedy club, and an 18-hole golf course. It also has a live performance venue that attracts national acts, not to mention the largest casino in Minnesota attached to its lobby. Its more conventional facilities include an indoor pool and a full spa, but the fitness center is off-site, down the road at the sprawling Dakotah! Sport & Fitness complex (the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community own both). Smoking is allowed in the common spaces and can be bothersome to some, but adult guests who don't mind will find plenty to do here. However, many guests complain of management and housekeeping issues. Recently rooms have contemporary decor and big 49-inch flat-screen TVs.

Sheraton Bloomington Hotel
5601 West 78th Street

Sheraton Bloomington Hotel is a four-pearl business property located in a suburb of Minneapolis, about a 25-minute drive from the city center. The 282 rooms  are consistently sleek and modern, with big flat-screen TVs and a minimalist, gray-dominant color scheme found throughout the property's common areas. The main clientele are business travelers, which is reflected in the amenities: a Club Lounge with free breakfast, a business center, free and fast Wi-Fi, and -- most of all -- a huge variety of flexible meeting spaces ranging from meeting rooms to a 500-person ballroom. There's also a fitness center with modern equipment, but the lack of a pool or spa might put some people off of staying here. Those keen on swimming should look into staying at the Hilton Minneapolis/Bloomington nearby, which has a small indoor pool and a hot tub.

Hampton Inn & Suites Minneapolis - St. Paul Airport
2860 Metro Dr

The 146-room Hampton Inn & Suites Minneapolis - St. Paul Airport is a value property with clean, conventional rooms near the airport and the Mall of America. Renovated in 2014, this hotel is well maintained and offers a free hot breakfast, free 24-hour shuttle, and free Wi-Fi. The indoor pool and hot tub are property highlights. Rooms are spacious but generic with comfortable beds, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. While parking in the surface lot is free, underground parking costs an extra fee. The adjacent SpringHill Suites Minneapolis - St. Paul Airport offers free garage parking and similar amenities, though rates can often be higher.

Fitger's Inn
600 E Superior St

Housed in the former Fitger's brewery, a building that dates back to the 1880s, this historic complex has been renovated into a 62-room inn with beautiful views of Lake Superior. A few minutes away from downtown Duluth by car, Fitger’s has several on-site restaurants and shops, including a brew pub, and bookings include free continental breakfast and valet parking. While the space definitely has an antique feel that isn’t particularly luxurious -- think older carpeting and wallpaper -- the venue’s history and amenities make it unique compared to the area’s other chain hotels.

The Grand Hotel Minneapolis
615 2nd Ave S

The 140-room Grand Hotel Minneapolis - a Kimpton Hotel is an upscale property in the heart of the downtown business district. Its crowning feature is the connected Life Time Athletic Club, which gives guests access to an indoor lap pool, a running track, an aerobics studio, and numerous athletic courts. Contemporary rooms are large and stately, with work desks, leather chairs, and marble bathrooms (some have separate walk-in showers and soaking tubs). A popular lobby bar draws locals and its steak and sushi restaurant gets favorable reviews. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Radisson Blu Minneapolis, though it lacks a pool and spa.

Hotel 340
340 Cedar St

Hotel 340 is an upper-middle-range historic downtown property within walking distance to many attractions. Built in 1927, the building retains many charming architectural details, especially in the lobby with its high ceilings and striking fireplace. The building also houses the private Saint Paul Athletic Club, which is free to hotel guests, and includes free fitness classes and an indoor lap pool. Its 56 rooms are attractively priced and have polished hardwood floors, comfortable beds, and nice conveniences including a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffeemaker. However, they lack the same grandeur of the public spaces. Still, a continental breakfast is included in all rates, although there's no full restaurant, just a lobby bar. A reasonably priced chain alternative is the Holiday Inn St. Paul Downtown, which is near the Xcel Center and has a restaurant and shuttle service.

Emery Hotel, Autograph Collection
215 S 4th St

The 222-room Hotel Minneapolis, Autograph Collection is an upscale property housed in a former bank, with original features throughout. High ceilings, large marble columns, and a lovely marble staircase are found in the striking lobby, but this sense of history doesn't continue into the rooms. Modern, somewhat generic rooms have contemporary amenities including big flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, but they also have small windows and lackluster views. Apart from its restaurant and bar, this hotel is slim on facilities, though it's connected to the city's indoor Skyway System for traversing downtown's malls and dining options with ease. Note that there's a fee to connect to in-room Wi-Fi, except for Marriott members. The nearby Westin Minneapolis, also housed in an old bank, has additional amenities that include an indoor pool.

Comfort Inn West
3900 W Superior St

The three-pearl Comfort Inn West is appealing to visitors for its modern design, indoor heated pool, and small bar. The 81 rooms are contemporary and come with great amenities like mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. The features cover a free hot and cold breakfast, plus a few extras like a sauna, hot tub, coin-operated laundry facilities, and evening weekday receptions. There is no gym, however. The hotel’s location is best for those with a car as it’s about a six- to 10-minute drive to downtown Duluth and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Park Point Marina is a good alternative for those who prefer to be closer to the beach and Canal Park downtown.

Park Point Marina Inn
1033 Minnesota Ave

This three-pearl property sits at the site of the former legendary Duluth Boat Club. While the hotel is well-maintained, the decor, which honors the former institution’s characteristics, can look old. However, the slightly dull interiors are offset by the lovely harbor-side pier walk and tranquil surroundings that are within walking distance to the busier Canal Park and Park Point Beach areas. The 68 rooms are spacious and well-appointed with microwaves, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and pleasant views. Amenities include an indoor pool and hot tub, free hot breakfast, room service, and bike rentals. The hotel also stands out for its emphasis on eco-friendly energy conservation and recycling practices. The Inn on Lake Superior has similar features and is much closer to Canal Park.
