Cambria Hotel & Suites Pittsburgh - Downtown
1320 Centre Ave

The three-and-a-half-pearl Cambria Hotel & Suites Pittsburgh-Downtown, fresh from a late-2016 renovation, offers an enticing combination of location, modern facilities, and affordable rates. Despite its name, the hotel isn't situated in the heart of downtown, but it's popular with Pittsburgh Penguin hockey fans, as the PPG Paints Arena is next to the property. The hotel's 142 suites are spacious and come equipped with mini-fridges, microwaves, Keurig coffeemakers, and sleeper sofas. Highlights include two restaurants with bars, a fitness center, an indoor pool, whirlpool, guest laundry facilities, and free Wi-Fi, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a more central stay can check out the Omni William Penn Hotel.

Lancaster Arts Hotel
300 Harrisburg Ave

With an emphasis on all things local, this upper-middle-range boutique hotel is housed in a renovated tobacco warehouse and situated near Lancaster’s lively arts district. Its 63 vibrant rooms incorporate the warehouse's original design details, like red brick walls and ceiling beams, alongside contemporary local art. Modern in-room conveniences include flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. The hotel's restaurant, John J. Jeffries, is a favorite among locals and hotel guests alike, serving organic, locally sourced fare. It’s a little pricier than nearby Hotel Lancaster, but with meeting rooms and a business center as well as free parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast, it's a solid choice for couples and business travelers.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort
100 Shawnee Inn Drive, P.O. Box 67

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is a gracious mid-range resort in the Pocono Mountains, right on the Delaware River. Built in 1911, it retains much of its vintage charm and is a nice trip back in time. The 103 charming rooms and suites come with mini-fridges, plush beds, and flat-screen TVs, though some could use an update. Features include a 27-hole championship golf course, indoor pool and hot tub, tennis, full-service spa, outdoor activities, and several restaurants plus a craft brewery. Travelers who want to be closer to NASCAR's Pocono Speedway should consider The Village at Pocono in Long Pond, which has sharp rooms and lower rates but lacks the golf course.

The Westin Philadelphia
99 S 17th St, at Liberty Place

The Westin Philadelphia is an elegant hotel with a central location close to Rittenhouse Square, shopping, and dining. The lobby is tucked away on the second floor, giving the hotel a somewhat private feel. Marble floors and ample seating in the lobby create a lovely space to relax outside of the room. A total of 294 rooms and 19 suites feature trademark Westin Heavenly Beds and signature White Tea bath products, along with 55-inch flat-screen TVs, thick bathrobes, and coffeemakers with Starbucks coffee. The hotel has a cramped fitness center, but no pool or spa, and fees for Wi-Fi and parking add up fast. For a Center City hotel with a large gym and the option of in-room spa services, consider the Hotel Monaco

Alexander Inn
301 South 12th and Spruce Street

The charming Alexander Inn is a mid-range, European-style boutique property in popular Center City Philadelphia. Furnished in an Art Deco style, this hotel boasts a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, colorful public spaces, and fine art in hallways and the lobby. It's a wonderful value given the central location, and the hotel provides free breakfast, free daily snacks, and free Wi-Fi, as well as a 24-hour fitness center and a 24-hour business center. The 48 rooms are clean and cozy, with large windows, but they do run small. While there is a fee for parking, it’s considerably less expensive than nearby options.

Hampton Inn & Suites Pittsburgh - Downtown
1247 Smallman St

The lower-middle-range Hampton Inn & Suites Pittsburgh-Downtown is popular with both convention goers, sports fans, and families and is conveniently located across the river from the major sports facilities, and between the city’s convention center and the Strip District’s entertainment attractions. You can expect to find standard Hampton Inn features such as free hot breakfast, small pool, free parking, and free Wi-Fi and 143 clean and spacious rooms with coffeemakers; suites add wet bars, mini-fridges, microwaves, and sleeper sofas. Downtown is at least 20 minutes by foot and there is no shuttle service. Beware of rate spikes that can be on par with rates at the upper-middle-range Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square on the waterfront.

Millstone Cottages
Tirhomin

A secluded atmosphere and a beautiful countryside setting makes the Millstone Cottages an ideal getaway for couples on a romantic trip or families looking to reconnect over the beauty of the Irish outdoors. The budget property has three self-catering cottages, each with three bedrooms, full-size kitchens, and living rooms. Two also have large hot tubs for up to six people. Another family-friendly option in the area could be the Inishowen Gateway, which offers a more typical hotel setting with ample facilities like a pool, a gym, and a restaurant, but rooms don't offer kitchens.

Pocono Palace Resort
206 Fantasy Road

Of the three couples-only Cove Haven resorts in the Poconos region, Pocono Palace is the most modern. That said, it still has all the corny retro romance factor that’s been attracting vacationing lovers to these mid-range resorts since the 1960s. Most of its 189 fantasy-themed rooms are equipped with their famously gaudy (and fun) heart-shaped hot tubs. It's hard not to marvel at the tri-level Roman Tower Suites with their whirlpools shaped as giant Champagne glasses -- though the saggy round beds, chintzy decor, and mirrors galore aren't for everyone, so simple contemporary rooms are available. All-inclusive packages cover breakfast, dinner, and non-alcoholic drinks. (Discerning diners need not apply.) Between the umpteen seasonal lake activities, pools, and nightly entertainment, there’s plenty to do at this lovers’ only compound. Those seeking romance without the cheesiness, could try Pocono Manor Resort & Spa.

Red Lion Inn & Suites Hershey
Rte 422 and Sipe Ave

The budget Red Lion Inn & Suites Hershey Inn is a family-friendly hotel in the heart of Hershey with an exceptionally large outdoor pool. A free continental breakfast is served in the lobby area, which also has a game room for kids. Although the lobby has been renovated, the 122 rooms are somewhat dated with smallish bathrooms. And guests have complained about stained carpeting and broken showerheads. Rooms include mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers. Rates are competitive but as with other hotels in Hershey, they can spike in peak season. Travelers might want to also consider the budget Comfort Inn at the Park, which often has lower rates.

Days Inn by Wyndham Gettysburg
865 York Rd

The two-pearl Days Inn Gettysburg offers a clean, comfortable, and affordable place to stay a brief drive from the city’s famous landmarks. Its 112 guest rooms offer ample space and feature above-average wood furniture, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Some rooms also offer two-person whirlpool tubs. With a free continental breakfast, it’s a solid choice for anyone visiting Gettysburg who doesn’t require staying in the historic district. However, there are several good alternatives in the area, including the pet-friendly Super 8 Gettysburg, which has an indoor pool, free breakfast, and offers better rates on some dates.
