The Charm Resort Phuket
212 Taweewong Rd.

The Charm Resort Phuket is an upscale property with 246 rooms and a stunning rooftop infinity pool that's located just one block from Patong's legendary beach. It's a bit removed from the main action of Patong -- meaning the strip of sand nearby is a bit more laid back -- but plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops line the 15-minute walk to Bangla Road. A free shuttle also is available for getting to the major shopping areas. Rooms are sleek and modern, and feature balconies or terraces, some with whirlpools or direct pool access. The restaurant serves all meals, and there's a sharp little fitness center too. Families may want to consider Senses Resort, which has a kids' club and great views.

Blue Ocean Resort
273 Rat-U-Thit Song Roi Pee Rd.

Crammed among shops and bars on the main street that runs through Patong, the 100-room Blue Ocean Resort caters to vacationers who want to be immersed in the city's hustle and bustle. Guest rooms are spacious and clean, with free bottled water and rainfall showers. At the center of the hotel is a large pool with plenty of lounging space and a poolside bar; the beach is also just a short walk away. The hotel also serves a free daily buffet breakfast, and there's a spa offering massages and body scrubs. However, the property is showing signs of age, and much of its decor is dated and clashing. Guests wanting a more stylish atmosphere may want to check out the Banthai Beach Resort & Spa, a few minutes' drive north.

Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach
99 Muen-Ngoen Road, Tri-Trang Beach, Phuket

A six-minute drive from Patong Beach, the luxury Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach is a large, contemporary property with ample to keep guests of all ages entertained. Its beach is private and generally quiet, but the ocean is extremely rocky and water shoes are a necessity. Fortunately, there are three big pools -- one with a waterslide and another with a swim-up bar, in addition to a spa, kids' club, and a Muay Thai boxing stage. Several restaurants offer Thai, Italian, and international cuisines, plus there are a coffee shop and smoothie spot. The 414 rooms are spacious and modern, albeit chain-like and lacking Thai flair, all equipped with furnished terraces, separate tubs and showers, and coffeemakers, plus some add pool access or sea views. Some minor wear and tear, older shower fixtures in certain units, and noise issues are notable downsides. For something closer to the airport, consider JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa.

The Royal Paradise Hotel & Spa
135/23 Rat-U-Thit 200 Years Road

The three-and-a-half pearl, 350-room Royal Paradise Hotel is in one of Phuket's tallest buildings, so great city views are a given. The hotel is a quick walk to the beach and Bangla Road, the heart of Patong's nightlife, and has three outdoor pools, several international restaurants, a swim-up bar, a hot tub, a spa, fitness center, meeting rooms, and a business corner. Suites with kitchenettes are also available -- some have terraces with hot tubs. Some guests find the decor in the reasonably priced rooms to be a bit dated and old-fashioned. For something more modern, guests might want to compare the Royal Paradise with the Nap Patong Hotel.

Patong Beach Hotel
124 Taweewongse Road

The 245-room, three-and-a-half pearl Patong Beach Hotel is located in central Patong, on popular Patong Beach, in an ideal spot to sample the fabled nightlife of Bangla Road. The hotel is busy and fun, and the rooms are super bright and colorful, with private balconies and luxe four-poster beds. This hotel combines city location and a true Thai -- and young -- vibe. Guests who don’t like noise or late night comings and goings -- who prefer a more sedate environment --  may want to book elsewhere.

Deevana Patong Resort & Spa
43/2 Raj-U Thid 200 Pee Road

The three-pearl Deevana Patong Resort & Spa is a large resort tucked away on a quiet alley in the outskirts of Patong, with two separate wings, each offering a distinctive style. There are two beautiful pools, including one with a swim-up bar, and a small spa with whirlpool and private treatment rooms. The 216 guest rooms are spartan and clean, with mini-fridges and balconies with pool or garden views. While the surroundings are quiet and peaceful, the walk to either Patong Beach or the city center takes about 15 to 20 minutes. While it's not ideal for those who want to be in the center of the action, there are plenty of activities at the property to keep couples and, in particular, families occupied.

Millennium Resort Patong Phuket
199, Rat-Uthit 200 Pee Road

The 418-room upscale Millennium Resort Patong Phuket is a city hotel that is part of the 200-shop Jungceylon shopping mall. The hotel, located in the heart of busy Patong, is super contemporary but has a chain feel, like a Marriott or Hilton, without much of a Thai vibe. The location makes the Millennium great for business travelers and nightlife-loving tourists. There are two lovely pools with poolside bars. Rooms are spacious and clean, with modern bathrooms and private balconies.

Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong - MGallery Hotel Collection
39/9 Muen Ngern Road, Tri-trang Beach

The Avista Hideaway Phuket Patong, MGallery by Sofitel is a luxury property perched on a lush hillside bordering Patong city that offers a quiet atmosphere and a modern, vaguely futuristic aesthetic. The 150 rooms and suites are decorated in metallics and rich earth tones, and have all have private balconies. On-site features include three infinity pools with poolside and swim-up bars, a spa with hillside views, a sleek rooftop terrace with a cocktail bar, and an opulent international restaurant. However, the resort's location on the outskirts of Patong make it less than ideal for those wanting to be in the center of the city's action.

Baan Laimai Beach Resort & Spa
66 Thaweewong Road, Patong Beach

The Baan Laimai Beach Resort is a mid-range property in the tourist center of downtown Patong, near a slew of bars, shops, and nightlife venues. Guest rooms are spacious and clean, with simple wood decor and homey accents; some offer direct access to the pool or a grassy terrace. The sprawling 172-room property is a quick walk from the beach across the street, and has a massive pool with a swim-up bar, a restaurant, and live music that tends to continue until late at night. A colorful kids' club and kiddy pool area are available, but the property's noisy, seedy surroundings may deter some families from staying here.

Burasari Resort
18/110 Ruamjai Road

With its authentic Thai decor, open-air bar and restaurant, and two beautiful pools, the upscale Burasari Resort provides an idyllic respite from the hectic pace of Patong. This 186-room property is right across from the beach and a short walk from the heart of the city, yet feels cozy and secluded thanks to its leafy, tropical grounds. A variety of room types are available, and all come with free minibars. The property's spa offers a host of pricey treatments, but the Thai and continental buffet breakfast is free. This is a good choice for couples seeking a relatively quiet, romantic stay within close proximity of livelier environs in Patong.
