A good fit for business travelers and leisure tourists alike, Radisson Blu Hotel Champs Elysées is an upscale, chain hotel in an excellent location near the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysees. Its 46 modern rooms get twice-daily cleanings and are equipped with minibars, coffee/tea facilities, free Wi-Fi, and spacious modern bathrooms. There’s an elegant restaurant on-site with outdoor seating and a chic bar with a fireplace, plus an English breakfast is included in most room rates. Amenities are fairly limited, however, for a four-pearl hotel (that's billed as five-star). For added features like a fitness center and pool, travelers might want to consider the Saint James & Albany Hotel-Spa or the Hotel Felicien by Elegancia.

The upper-middle-range Hotel Chavanel is a 27-room, design-conscious boutique hotel in the heart of Paris, just a 10-minute walk from the Place de la Concorde and extremely well-connected to the city via public transit. Rooms here may be Paris-small, but they're chic and contemporary -- a step above the typical fare -- with luxe details and high-end amenities like rainfall showers, bathrobes, minibars, docking stations, HDTVs, and free Wi-Fi. Property features are at a minimum, though: A simple organic breakfast is served in a vaulted cellar and the lobby features a small lounge and pop-up shop, but there's no other dining or wellness facilities. Those looking for chic decor plus amenities like a restaurant and bar might consider the New Hotel Roblin La Madeleine around the corner. 

Full of romantic and whimsical details, Les Plumes is an upscale boutique hotel with a theme of great writer romances. Many of the 35 rooms have playful details and 19th-century accents. Suites are named after specific scribes, such as Victor Hugo, and have claw-foot bathtubs. All rooms include minibars, safes, and flat-screen TVs. The common areas are equally atmospheric, with hallway doors resembling bookshelves; a little courtyard provides a small urban oasis. As with many small Parisian properties, features are fairly limited aside from breakfast service (for a fee) and free Wi-Fi. But the location is excellent, a 15-minute walk to the Palais Garnier Opera House and luxe shopping. Travelers should also check out the nearby Meyerhold Hotel & Spa, which has a few more amenities and a modern design for similar rates.

The 63-room Home Moderne is a lovely, peaceful budget hotel in the 15th arrondissement, and offers a lot of value for the money. Located south of the city's center, the neighborhood is very Parisian, and the major tourist attractions are easily reached by metro, which is a pleasant 12-minute walk from the hotel. There's a park nearby, and rooms are charming and European-size (meaning not large), and offer flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Larger "family" rooms (suites) are available.

Tucked away in an untouristy neighborhood of northern Paris, the quirky, three-pearl Kube might be too high-tech and unusual for its own good. Rooms are spacious with comfortable beds, but some find the auto-timed lighting, fingerprint keys, and the uber-modern TV/Wi-Fi setup too complicated. That said, this 41-room hotel has distinctive character, good food, and is more affordable than many upper mid-range hotels in Paris. Because it houses the only ice bar in the city, it tends to draw a party crowd.

The 30-room Hotel Marcel is a small but stylish and modern boutique hotel situated right across the street from the Gare de L'Est and in walking distance to the Gare du Nord. This upper-middle-range hotel has few common areas other than a small lobby, homey breakfast room, and tiny but charming courtyard, but its decor and service (24-hour room service, in-room massages, babysitting) make it a level above standard fare. Rooms can be tiny, but they're chic with a modern look and amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, plus thoughtful extras like bathrobes and mini-fridges stocked with a few free (non-alcoholic) drinks. Hotel Paris Louis Blanc is another boutique option in the area -- it features more common areas, but service isn't quite as high-end.

France Louvre is an old-fashioned, no-frills budget option on world-famous Rue de Rivoli, a five-minute walk from the Hotel de Ville and in Le Marais. The location is a dream for shoppers (BHV is three minutes away by foot), foodies, and aesthetes, as the historic district is brimming with trendy boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. The small rooms are in need of a renovation, but all have flat-screen TVs, safes, and free coffee, tea, water, and galettes. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and a buffet breakfast with croissants, ham, cheese, eggs, and yogurt can be added to the rates. Le Relais du Marais is another value hotel in the area -- it's worth comparing rates.

Set off from the street in the Saint-Germain-des-Pres neighborhood of Paris, the Hotel des Marrionniers is a mid-range boutique property with numerous charms and quirks. The common areas in the well-preserved hotel on the stylish Rue Jacob have plenty of shabby chic, colonial-style furniture. A backyard garden and stone-wall library make for top-notch lounging. Its 37 rooms have been updated with contemporary finishes and are decorated in a mix of vintage and retro French style. Rooms and bathrooms, though, can be small. The location, in one of Paris' most desirable neighborhoods, is within walking distance of the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, and the Jardin des Tuileries. Travelers might want to also check out the Hotel de Seine, which has slightly larger rooms with more amenities but at higher rates.

Set up more like a bed-and-breakfast than a hotel, the budget Hotel du Haut Marais has just eight guest rooms, including one apartment with a kitchenette. Nestled into the Marais district of central Paris -- with plenty of shops, restaurants, and museums within easy walking distance -- this hotel is a great value, with breakfast included in the room price. Small guest rooms are cozy and clean, with exposed beams and flea market finds, along with flat-screen TVs. The property is best suited for couples or families who don’t mind stairs, and who appreciate a family-run, home-like lodging situation.
