The Tuscany - A St Giles Signature Hotel
120 East 39th Street Manhattan New York 0906

The 124-room Tuscany is an upscale hotel located in Murray Hill, a convenient base for exploring the city. Its large rooms come with wonderful beds, upscale amenities -- including flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and Molton Brown toiletries -- and elegant decor with pops of red (the hotel's signature color) . It bests its sister, The Court, with its excellent gym, quieter location, and stylish rooms.

Parker New York

The upscale The Parker New York packs in plenty of features and quirk, along with a prime Manhattan location just below Central Park and handy to MoMa and Fifth Avenue. Le Parker offers more amenities than many of its pricier neighboring competitors, with a 42nd-story indoor pool, roof deck, hidden burger restaurant, phenomenal fitness center, and a full (underground) floor dedicated to pampering and wellness in partnership with DryBar and Tenoverten. Higher-level rooms come with gorgeous Park or Manhattan skyline views -- but signs of wear in some rooms can disappoint and there's a daily facilities fee. The elegant look and hip vibe attract all sorts of travelers, including families and celebrities. Travelers seeking a similarly central hotel with updated rooms (and fewer families) could try the Dream Midtown

The Mansfield
12 W 44th St Off of Fifth Avenue

The three-pearl Mansfield Hotel is a charming and dignified throwback to another era in New York City. James Renwick (the lauded architect behind St. Patrick's Cathedral and the New York Public Library) designed the hotel at the turn of the century as a Beaux Arts gentlemen's club and hotel. Today, the handsome hotel houses 126 renovated rooms with hardwood floors and built-in window seats. Guests can mingle in the cozy library, decorated with antiques and a fireplace (supposedly F. Scott Fitzgerald spent time here) or have drinks and dinner in the popular M Bar. Continental breakfast is provided and weekly jazz performances are popular with locals. The walkable location is about five minutes from Times Square and two blocks from Bryant Park. As another historic literary alternative, the Algonquin Hotel and its famous Round Table restaurant are on the same block -- but the rates are higher.

InterContinental New York Barclay

The four-pearl InterContinental New York Barclay is a historic 1926-opened property located a six-minute walk north of Grand Central Terminal and eight minutes from Rockefeller Center. A $180 million renovation in 2016 updated interiors, though the design retains the feel of its '20s beginnings. The 702 rooms are elegant, outfitted with custom-designed furniture, coffeemakers, bathrobes, and flat-screen TVs, plus separate living areas and striking wall murals in some. Features aren't extensive -- there are no spa or pool facilities -- but they include a gin bar and restaurant, well-equipped gym, and business center. Corporate groups often make use of the extensive meeting space. This is a suitable pick for business travelers, but tourists might prefer the smaller and more stylish Benjamin nearby, which offers Federico Hair & Spa and a well-regarded bistro.

Excelsior Hotel
ground Floor The Siamheritage Hotel (inside 115/1 Surawong Road Khwaeng Suriya Wong Bangrak

The upper-middle-range Excelsior boasts an excellent Upper West Side location, across the street from the Museum of Natural History, one block from Central Park, and within walking distance of three subway lines. Art Deco-inspired rooms are clean and modern, though they lack mini-fridges and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi. Hotel features include spacious fitness and business centers, a relaxing lounge and breakfast area, and a popular restaurant for brunch on the weekends.

The Inn at Irving Place
56 Irving Place Manhattan New York 2314

Thorough attention to detail and old-world charm set this quaint boutique hotel apart. Its 12 rooms have been individually decorated with period antiques and fireplaces, and feature modern amenities, such as flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. The property lacks most of the amenities of larger hotels, including a fitness center and a full restaurant -- but it does offer an elegant tea salon, a central location a block from Union Square, and an intimate feel that's hard to come by in New York.

Hotel Edison Times Square

The mid-range Hotel Edison Times Square, dating back to 1931, is a popular choice with tour groups and travelers drawn by its convenient location in the heart of the theater district. Its 795 rooms have significant city views -- especially those on higher floors. Rooms are split between updated ones with contemporary design and less pricey unrenovated ones that are dated and don't have free Wi-Fi, but renovations are ongoing (as of winter 2016). Rooms with terraces and kitchenettes are also available. The hotel has comprehensive fitness and business centers as well as a bar specializing in rum drinks with a retro speakeasy vibe, plus a free wine and cheese reception is held twice a week. For a hipper vibe, travelers could try the TRYP by Wyndham New York Times Square, which tends to have lower rates as well.

Lowell Hotel

The Lowell is a high-end boutique known for its top-notch service and gorgeous individually decorated rooms. It is located in the tony Upper East Side, a block from Central Park, and a short walk from designer boutiques along Madison and Fifth avenues. Its 74 rooms and suites have elegant, stylish decor and great amenities, including DDC28 toiletries, flat-screen TVs with movies on demand, and free Wi-Fi. Most units also have wood-burning fireplaces, full kitchens, and terraces. On-site restaurant and the fitness center are perks, but the hotel does not offer spa services.

The Wolcott Hotel
4 West 31st Street Between 5th Avenue & Broadway

The historic Wolcott Hotel comes in impressive packaging for a two-and-a-half-pearl property, with a chandelier-studded lobby oozing with vintage New York grandeur and a Midtown Manhattan location walkable to Times Square, the Empire State Building, and several subway lines. However, the old-fashioned charm doesn’t quite carry over to the 160 rooms and amenities. Rooms are large enough by New York City standards, and some have Empire State Building views, but furnishings are dated and there are no tea/coffee-making facilities. The small on-site gym and business center are also in need of updating. There isn't a bar or a restaurant (just free coffee and muffins for breakfast) and guests are charged per-day fees for Wi-Fi. Travelers may prefer the almost equally affordable Broadway at Times Square Hotel, which has free Wi-Fi and free breakfast.

Courtyard New York Manhattan/Chelsea

A short walk from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, the Courtyard New York Manhattan/Chelsea is a bright and contemporary mid-range hotel that opened in late 2013. Its 273 rooms are clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated, but on the small side. Amenities include mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and roomy walk-in showers and suites have separate living rooms. Features include a bistro that serves breakfast and an attached pub with good lunch and dinner menus. There's also a laundry room, a 24-hour fitness center, a business center, and valet parking (with no in/out privileges). The nearby, mid-range Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden is a good alternative, with comparable rates and a free hot breakfast.
