Homewood Suites by Hilton Edgewater - NYC Area
10 The Promenade

This Homewood Suites located in Edgewater, NJ -- a 25-minute bus ride from Manhattan -- is a credit to the Homewood Suites brand. All of the big, clean rooms have comfortable beds, kitchenettes, and pull-out couches; some have separate living rooms, making this a particularly convenient choice for families. There are also freebies galore, which add up to an incredible value, including Wi-Fi, coffee and tea in the lobby, breakfast, shuttle service, abundant parking, and even a grocery shopping service. Features are also impressive for a mid-range chain: There's a modern 24-hour fitness center with a sauna, a business center with two computers and two printers, a guest laundry, and a convenience store. It's a great bet for families and extended stay travelers, as well as leisure travelers heading to Manhattan -- provided they don't mind trading value for convenience.

The Sand Box Motel
5310 Park Blvd

The Sand Box Motel is a 24-room budget-friendly motel that caters to families. The Sand Box has a heated pool with a tiny waterslide and a sand box for the little ones, as well as a sundeck, hot tub, and two separate grilling areas for the adults. Completely renovated in the summer of 2015, rooms feel refreshed with updated furniture, carpeting, bedding, and fresh coats of paint on the walls. Bathrooms maintain their charming, original 1950s tile, but most are teeny tiny and some smell musty. The San Box’s major pitfall is its location -- five blocks and a good 10-minute walk from the beach. The motel is pet-friendly for a fee, and offers free parking and Wi-Fi. Guests traveling with pets who’d prefer to be closer to the beach should check out Rus Mar Motel, although its rooms aren’t as nice and it doesn’t have a pool.

The Beachcomber Resort
7900 Dune Dr

This 53-room, budget hotel offers guests a simple, quiet stay just a few minutes' walk from the beach. Individually styled rooms -- some contemporary and others dated but homey -- with kitchenettes, sleeper sofas, and TVs appeal to families, as does the heated outdoor pool with a hot tub. Wi-Fi is free (albeit spotty), and there are both laundry and barbecue facilities available. There are a couple of restaurants and a park nearby, plus a supermarket just a two-minute drive away. Those seeking a modern hotel with more in the way of on-site amenities should check out Icona Golden Inn. However, the contemporary decor, two restaurants, pool, and entertainment do come at a price.

The Water Club Hotel
1 Renaissance Way

The Water Club is an 800-room modern and exclusive escape from the bustle of Atlantic City. Guests have access to the casino, restaurants, and nightlife of the attached Borgata -- but have their own exclusive amenities, including five adults-only heated pools and a serene two-story Immersion spa. Rooms have more amenities than at the Borgata next door, including iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and Keurig coffeemakers, but the pools can be crowded during the summer, and this level of quality comes with one of the highest price tags in Atlantic City.

Tropicana Atlantic City
S. Brighton Avenue and the Boardwalk

The Tropicana is an enormous megaresort with over 2,000 rooms and suites spread across three towers. The rooms, which are plagued with dated decor and tube TVs, are not the highlight at this boardwalk hotel. Its Havana-inspired three-story streetscape called the Quarter is much more inviting, with an IMAX Theater, shopping, restaurants, and nightclubs. The Tropicana also draws visitors for its high-end spa, Broadway-style theater, and seasonal outdoor pool and bar -- not to mention the huge casino floor. A location right on the boardwalk and freebies such as Wi-Fi are convenient perks, but beware of long lines at check-in.

Sandpiper Beach Resort
11 Beach Ave

Sandpiper Beach Resort offers guests a comfortable, well-kept environment directly across the street from a beautiful beach and in walking distance of several restaurants and shopping. All 51 rooms are suites with separate bedrooms, full kitchens, and laundry facilities, which makes a stay with kids more convenient. On-site features are limited, but there are an outdoor heated pool, sauna, and modern fitness room. Guests have access to other features at sister hotels, most notably free loungers and meal service on the beach at Congress Hall, a few minutes’ walk down the street. Those looking for more on-site features may find Congress Hall worth checking out with its two pools, restaurants and bars, and full-service spa.

La Sammana Resort
1400 W Brigantine Ave

The modern 62-room La Sammana Resort is an mid-range timeshare property on Brigantine Island situated two blocks away from the beach and a 15-minute drive to Atlantic City. Contemporary studios and one- and two-bedroom suites have flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, and living rooms, though the decor is a bit dated with some '80s touches. The hotel has a small pool on a rooftop sundeck with lovely beach views, as well as a small fitness center. A modern lounge offers a collection of books and board games and a flat-screen TV. The property has a one week minimum stay, however, and shorter bookings may incur a fee. The hotel can fill up during the season, and travelers seeking something comparable in the area should consider the nearby Legacy Vacation Club Brigantine Beach, which also features all-suite accommodations.

Bally's Atlantic City
1900 Pacific Ave., Park Place and Boardwalk

Bally's Atlantic City is a hotel and casino with a prime spot along the beach and Boardwalk, next to sister property Caesar's Palace. The 1,760 rooms and suites are spread throughout several buildings -- including the historic Claridge Tower -- and have coffeemakers and mini-fridges. The Ruby Rooms are the most recently renovated and feature contemporary decor along with nice linens, (some) flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. However, not all areas are the same, and many rooms still contain worn, outdated furnishings and tube TVs. Hotel features including the attached Wild West Casino, an indoor pool with huge skylight, fitness center, and 24-hour room service. This big complex has several nightlife options and restaurants ranging from casual to upscale, but expect fees for parking, Wi-Fi, and use of the indoor pool and fitness center.

Beach Terrace Motor Inn
3400 Atlantic Ave

The Beach Terrace Motor Inn is one of Wildwood’s larger hotels, with 78 rooms spanning eight stories. The hotel’s prime location on Atlantic Avenue, just one block from all the action of the beach, boardwalk, and water parks, is possibly its only truly great attribute -- otherwise, the place is pretty much a dump. The entire property shows signs of disrepair and neglect, from moldy air-conditioning vents in the rooms, to shaky railings on the balconies, to the stench of urine and cigarette smoke near the elevators. If you can ignore these failings, the hotel usually offers reasonable room rates, has a fairly nice rooftop pool, and is home to an on-site buffet restaurant and a happening bar and nightclub. Just about any hotel in the area is a better pick -- The Sunflower Motel has better hospitality, while AA Heart of Wildwood Motels has nicer rooms. Both have more expensive nightly rates.

Wyndham Garden Newark Airport
550 Route 1 South

About three miles from Newark Airport, the 349-room Wyndham Garden Hotel Newark Airport is an average sleep-and-fly kind of place with a few nice amenities. Updated in 2015, the rooms and lobby look refreshed, but still feature chain-like decor with little personality. There are a seasonal outdoor pool, a small gym, a business center, and an on-site convenience store. The mid-range hotel offers a free 24-hour shuttle to Newark Airport. For those looking for something a little more filling than muffins and yogurt, the on-site Starlight Restaurant and Lounge serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but the food is mediocre at best. Check rates at the comparable Ramada Plaza Newark Liberty International Airport, with many of the same features plus Keurig coffeemakers in the rooms.
