Wine Valley Lodge
200 S Coombs St

The budget Wine Valley Lodge offers budget-minded travelers affordable, no-frills accommodations within a short drive of downtown Napa. The motel-style property has been around since 1953, and it has some celebrity attached, with past guests including Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. Its 53 guest rooms are tidy and comfortable, but dated with worn-out furniture. All units contain AC, flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges, but there are no kettles. Freebies include parking, continental breakfast, and Wi-Fi throughout, and there's also a pleasant heated outdoor pool. Rates are among the cheapest in the notoriously expensive town. Travelers looking for a stay that's a step up who don't mind paying more can consider Best Western Elm House Inn, but there's no pool.

Carneros Resort and Spa
4048 Sonoma Hwy.

The luxury Carneros Resort and Spa is geared toward high-budget travelers -- it's pricey -- but guests who can afford it will find a sort of homey elegance here. Hillside Adirondack chairs overlook the vineyard. Crackling fireplaces warm every room. Private gardens and tree-lined infinity pools invite guests to relax. The entire resort feels like it's set on a farm, with cottages strewn about that house some of the guest rooms. The rooms are very comfy, with private decks and stone patios surrounded by overgrown greens and a fire pit. They also have outdoor tubs and showers, which is a cool feature. The open bathrooms inside are huge, with walk-in showers and a soaking tub. The property has three restaurants, one of which overlooks the vineyard, a bright and airy yoga studio, a fitness center, a hair salon, and a grocery store called The Market at Town Square.

Chablis Inn
3360 Solano Ave

The Chablis Inn is basically a simple two-level mid-range motor lodge with no frills. The rooms are big and comfortable enough. While it does have a (tiny) pool and perks such as free Wi-Fi, this place is probably better suited as a one-night stopover for wine country visitors than a long-term stay. It's close by to some great wineries, but the hotel itself isn't the type of environment where you'd sit outside with a couple of glasses of wine and relax.

Best Western Plus Inn At The Vines
100 Soscol Ave

The Best Western Plus Inn at the Vines is a mid-range Napa hotel with more updated decor than one might expect from the chain. Its 69 large rooms have vine-patterned carpets, work desks, microwaves, and coffeemakers. There's an outdoor pool and hot tub, but both are small, and there's neither a restaurant or a bar here (however, breakfast is included for rewards members at the Denny's next door). Its location, at a major intersection, may dampen the wine-country romance, but the rates make it a good-value choice. Those looking for a spot that's walking distance to downtown Napa attractions may consider spending a little more for a stay at the Best Western Plus Elm House Inn.

Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa
3425 Solano Ave

The Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa is a three-and-a-half-pearl property renovated in 2016 and situated right off the highway for easy access to the wine region. There isn't much in the immediate area, but extensive features on-site are geared toward relaxation. There's an outdoor pool, a spa with a whirlpool, steam room, and treatment rooms, plus a 24-hour fitness center, and a restaurant and bar with a patio and fire pits. A resort fee cover perks such as daily wine tastings, morning yoga by the pool, tours of the hotel's garden, and Wi-Fi throughout. The property's 275 guest rooms are fresh and contemporary, with farmhouse accents and amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. If lack of wellness facilities aren't a deal breaker, the Andaz Napa offers chicer decor and a downtown location.

RiverPointe Napa Valley Resort
500 Lincoln Ave

RiverPointe Napa Valley is a mid-range property with bright, repurposed-mobile-home "cabins" situated in a peaceful spot along the Napa River, about a five-minute drive from downtown. The 104 compact units are nicely equipped with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and furnished decks. It's a self-service hotel for slightly longer stays -- there's no restaurant or bar, for example -- but the property has lots of hangout space, such as an outdoor heated pool, hot tub, small sauna, and picnicking areas with barbecues. Nightly events are held in a clubhouse, which sometimes has free wine tastings. Drawbacks include a resort fee, limited housekeeping, and a fee for parking. Guests looking for a more traditional hotel might consider The Inn on First, but it lacks the open space and self-service style of this property.

Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Napa Valley
314 Soscol Ave

The lower-middle-range Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Napa Valley offers budget-friendly rates in a location that’s just a short drive from downtown Napa. It’s an older, motel-style property with exterior corridors, but public spaces have been well-maintained. However, while its 60 guest rooms are spacious and have nice amenities including flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, they’re rather dark and dated, with worn out furniture. The hotel serves a free hot breakfast in a room with an outdoor patio, and there's also a small indoor pool and fitness center with up-to-date equipment, although the space is cramped. Overall, it’s a good value in what can be a pricey area during peak season. Travelers looking for a stay that's modern and a step up might consider the Best Western Plus Inn at the Vines.

Hotel Indigo Napa Valley
4195 Solano Ave

Hotel Indigo Napa Valley is a mid-range, mid-size hotel in the heart of Napa Valley between downtown Napa and vineyard-dotted Yountville. Thanks to 2017 renovations, the lobby, breakfast room, and guest rooms are fresh and contemporary, though decor is standard chain fare. Its 115 rooms are spacious with executive desks, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and rainfall showers. On the downside, their thin walls can let in outside noise. The property has a small fitness center and an outdoor pool and hot tub (not included in the renovations), but there's no full-service restaurant or bar, though a buffet breakfast is offered for an extra fee. Those looking for the convenience of on-site dining could compare rates with the nearby Hilton Garden Inn Napa, which has a restaurant -- although decor here is more dated.

Inn on Randolph
411 Randolph St

The Inn on Randolph is a newly remodeled, gabled property dating to the late 19th century on a residential tree-lined street, walking distance from downtown Napa. The inn consists of a mix of buildings, including the main historic house, which contains a handful of rooms, and a small number of stand-alone private cottages. The lovely rooms are airy and luxurious with soft neutral tones; some have fireplaces and terraces. There is an excellent gourmet breakfast and peaceful shaded gardens with Adirondack chairs for sipping wine in the evenings. Service is consistently praised; the innkeeper can help make arrangements for wine tours and restaurant reservations.

Vino Bello Resort
865 Bordeaux Way

The 182-room, Tuscany-inspired Vino Bello Resort borders Napa vineyards and offers two heated pools as well as use of the spa and dining options at the adjacent Meritage Resort. Rooms are large, traditionally furnished condominiums with flat-screen TVs and balconies or patios. The time-share sales pitch guests receive at check-in is a common complaint. To avoid this, another option is the SpringHill Suites Napa Valley.
