Hampton Inn Holland
12427 Felch Street

This 179-room, three-and-a-half-pearl Hampton Inn has way more personality than most of its sister properties, and includes a beautiful indoor pool and whirlpool, an outdoor hot tub, and a full bar and restaurant. Sharp, modern rooms come with mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers -- and extremely comfortable beds. Travelers might want to also check out the neighboring Holiday Inn Express, which has slightly lower rates, but with a private business area, a large game room, a fitness center, and a free hot breakfast, the Hampton Inn Holland offers more bang for the buck.

Main Street Inn and Suites
7408 Main Street

This small boutique hotel sits right on Main Street in the middle of downtown Mackinac Island. The clean, but dated, 18 guest rooms are individually decorated with floral bedspreads, and some come with bedroom hot tubs and nice views of Main Street and the harbor. Interior rooms are less expensive, but only have skylights instead of windows. The two-and-a-half pearl hotel accommodates romantic escapes and family vacations. Rates are slightly less than similar hotels of the same quality, such as the Hotel Iroquois. Breakfast isn’t available, so guests looking for that amenity can try the Cottage Inn of Mackinac Island.

The Inn at Harbor Shores
800 Whitwam Dr

The 92-room Inn at Harbor Shores is an upper-middle-range, cottage-style property on the waterfront with excellent views from a rooftop deck, a poolside bar, and the restaurant’s terrace. The hotel has two indoor/outdoor pools, hot tubs, and a spa, while active travelers will appreciate the outdoor volleyball and 24-hour gym. Simple, elegant rooms have private balconies overlooking the golf course or harbor, while suites feature kitchens and Lake Michigan views in some. A popular wedding venue, the property has 13,000-square-feet of event space. Guests should note that rooms have poor sound insulation, so wedding parties and passing trains can be disturbing. It's one of the priciest properties in the area, so travelers seeking something less expensive might want to consider the Holiday Inn Express St. Joseph instead.

Comfort Inn Traverse City
460 Munson Ave

Two-pearl Comfort Inn Traverse City is a pleasant, small hotel that's a short walk from the lakefront and a five-minute drive to downtown Traverse City. Welcome freebies include a shuttle bus that heads downtown and to the airport, and a buffet breakfast with hot and cold items. The 62 rooms come in a variety of configurations, but are a bit tired -- some have kitchens or extra beds, while others have in-room jetted tubs. Despite its budget status, there's a decent selection of amenities here, including an indoor pool with a whirlpool, a fitness room, game room, and coin-operated laundry facilities. Travelers willing to push the budget a bit could look at Cherry Tree Inn & Suites instead, which is right on the waterfront and adds an outdoor pool.

Best Western Greenfield Inn
3000 Enterprise Dr

The mid-range Best Western Greenfield Inn is a full-service pink Victorian-style hotel with lots of attractive amenities, located just off Interstate 94 between the airport and downtown Detroit. Its 209 rooms are clean and comfortable, but a bit dark and traditionally decorated. They’re well equipped with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Hotel highlights include a huge selection of vintage car photos, Mugly’s Food & Spirits, spacious indoor pool, fitness center, and sauna. It also has guest laundry facilities and meeting space. Free shuttle service is provided to the airport, nearby Henry Ford Museum, and other area attractions. Compare rates with the Comfort Inn Near Greenfield Village which, unlike the Best Western, offers a free breakfast.

Amway Grand Plaza, Curio Collection by Hilton
187 Monroe Ave NW

The 682-room Amway Grand Plaza Hotel is many things at once: upscale, historic, architecturally impressive -- all of these combine to make it a landmark in Grand Rapids. Guests can choose between the faithfully restored Old World atmosphere of the original hotel tower or the new building, with its airy, sleek vibe and modern decor. With lots of ballroom and meeting space on-site, this is a popular pick for business travelers, though tourist sights like the Gerald Ford Museum are only a five-minute walk away. The property is home to an indoor pool and hot tubs, outdoor tennis court, a large fitness center, and a spa. There are eight on-site options for dining and drinking, and the property is within walking distance of more restaurant options in Grand Rapids.

The Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport
2501 Worldgateway Place

The upscale Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport is a step above most airport hotels -- it has a beautiful, serene atrium with a huge reflecting pool, and it's exceptionally quiet for an airport property. Attached to the Delta Air Lines terminal, the hotel offers unmatched convenience for flight-bound travelers, with its own airport security checkpoint and e-ticket center. Amenities include a full-service restaurant, large fitness center, indoor pool/whirlpool, concierge services, and meeting space. Its 414 rooms are spacious, and include One- and Two-Bedroom Suites -- all with coffeemakers, safes, robes, and lovely marble bathrooms. In-room spa treatments can be arranged as well. But Wi-Fi isn’t free for all guests, and its restaurants and rooms can be pricey. Travelers seeking to stay near the airport could also consider the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Detroit-Dearborn, with lower rates and a free airport shuttle.

Holiday Inn Grand Haven - Spring Lake
940 W Savidge St

The 120-room mid-range Holiday Inn Grand Haven - Spring Lake is a family- and dog-friendly hotel on the Grand River, with a private marina and water views. Guest rooms are clean and contemporary, with private balconies or patios, though the bathrooms leave a bit to be desired. This hotel is a step above what many may think of a typical Holiday Inn, and offers spacious lawns, scenic river views, sundecks, a popular restaurant, a tiki bar, and an event planner on-site. There are also indoor and outdoor pools, a modern fitness center, and conference facilities, plus drives into charming Grand Haven only take five minutes.

Ann Arbor Regent Hotel & Suites
2455 Carpenter Rd

The two-and-a-half-pearl Ann Arbor Regent Hotel & Suites is an independently-operated, family-owned property that offers a comfortable stay at reasonable rates. Located just off Interstate 94 between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, it’s a short drive to the universities and to other area attractions. Highlights include free breakfast and parking, a fitness center, and a game room, but there's no full-service restaurant/bar on-site, and the indoor pool is small. Its 125 guest rooms are comfortable, but they lack personality. Microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi are standard amenities. Travelers looking for stay with a nice pool and on-site restaurant can try Hilton Garden Inn, but rates can be higher.

Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Detroit-Dearborn
5801 Southfield Fwy

The upper-middle-range DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Detroit-Dearborn sits between the Detroit Metropolitan Airport and downtown Detroit, making it a convenient, busy hub for business travelers and tourists. There's free shuttle service within a 15-mile radius, including the airport, but not downtown. Its 347 rooms include coffeemakers, safes, and mini-fridges. Suites have wet bars and whirlpool tubs. It has 16,000 square feet of meeting space, and the hotel hosts numerous business and social functions. Other amenities include a small indoor pool, fitness center, full-service restaurant and bar, a business center, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers seeking to stay closer to the airport could compare rates with the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which is attached to the terminal.
