Fenwick Inn
13801 Coastal Hwy

The Fenwick Inn is a 198-room, two-pearl property that sits a block from the beach at Ocean City’s northern tip. Popular with bus tours, the hotel is under new management and has been updating its dated room decor and adding new mattresses. Hallways can be a little dark, but the lobby is large and well lit, and the staff is friendly. It's a good location for travelers who prefer a quieter area away from the bustle of the boardwalk. The hotel has a pleasant indoor pool and hot tub with plenty of windows and a partial-glass ceiling, and the eighth-floor restaurant offers lovely views. Travelers might want to compare rates with the Comfort Inn Gold Coast, also at the northern end of Ocean City.

Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel - Oceanfront
10100 Coastal Hwy

A large, mid-range hotel that caters to mature couples, families, and large groups, the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau overflows with amenities: nightclub, fitness center, playground, pet park, gift shop, indoor and outdoor pools, four bars, a restaurant, and a health spa with a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool. A variety of clean (if slightly dated) rooms are available, including bi-level cabanas with spiral staircases near the pool. A path offers direct beach access, and it's about a 10-minute drive from the boardwalk. This is one of the only pet-friendly hotels in Ocean City, and one of only two that sells liquor on the sand.

Princess Royale Resort
9100 Coastal Highway

Princess Royale Resort is a three-pearl property with a nice public beachfront and loads of features, but it's beginning to show its age in terms of decor and cleanliness. Most of the guests are families and couples who want to enjoy the indoor swimming pool, restaurants, on-site spa, and video game arcade while taking advantage of spacious suites and condos with full kitchens; some have ocean views. The condos are privately owned, so decor and maintenance varies from unit to unit. The location is about 10 minutes from the boardwalk, making this a slightly out of the way but quieter hotel option.

Holiday Inn Express Ocean City
12601 Coastal Highway

This 122-room chain is a solid value for a comfortable, mid-range hotel, albeit one that lacks character. An indoor and outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast are welcome extras. The location is off the beaten path—the hotel is across a major highway from the beach and a short drive from the boardwalk and heart of Ocean City. The rooms are bright and clean, and offer microwaves and mini-fridges, but have a generic feel (picture plain furnishings, bland artwork, and wall-to-wall carpeting). Those looking for a more central beach location might consider the Sea Hawk Motel, or for more modern decor (and slightly higher prices), try the Hampton Inn & Suites Ocean City.

Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Ocean City
1701 Atlantic Ave

This 210-room, mid-range chain hotel is pleasant and inviting, albeit with a somewhat generic feel. With multiple pools, restaurants, and a fitness center, it does offer an array of features to accommodate kids and adults. Its location right on the Ocean City boardwalk is convenient for those wanting plenty of beach and boardwalk time. Rooms are spacious, with fully equipped kitchenettes and private balconies, and some have pretty bay views. The decor and furnishings are somewhat chain-like and outdated, however.

Hampton Inn & Suites Ocean City
4301 Coastal Highway

This 113-room property on the bay covers all the chain hotel basics: Clean, comfy, modern furnishings; free Wi-Fi and breakfast; and sunny, attractive indoor and outdoor pools. The location is great for convention-goers—right near the convention center—but across a busy six-lane highway from the beach, and a 20-block walk to the boardwalk. Rooms are big and contemporary, if generic.

Sea Bay Hotel
6007 Coastal Hwy, 61st Street & Coastal Highway

The Sea Bay is a basic, budget choice for Ocean City. A flat, lackluster feel pervades the lobby and guest rooms. Though rooms have convenient kitchenettes and balconies, they have very sparse decor and a somewhat dingy look overall. The Sea Bay stands along a major highway, which guests must cross in order to get to the beach. The hotel is located a short drive away from the convention center, the boardwalk, and the heart of Ocean City's action. Limited features include two outdoor pools and free Wi-Fi. The Sleep Inn & Suites is a newer, more pleasant option at a comparable price.

The Spinnaker
18th Street & Baltimore Avenue

The 100-room Spinnaker has location going for it: The property is situated right in the heart of Ocean City and a few minutes' walk from the boardwalk and the beach. This budget hotel doesn't offer many amenities, though, with just an outdoor pool that overlooks a parking lot and a little café that serves breakfast and lunch. Rooms have convenient amenities that include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, private balconies, and kitchenettes, but the generic furnishings make for a chain-like feel.

The Flanders Hotel
719 11th St

The 94-suite Flanders Hotel is a historic, mid-range property located directly on the Ocean City boardwalk planks with easy access to the beach, neighboring amusement park, and all sorts of other fun and food that the area has to offer. The property has a lovely heated outdoor pool with shaded seating (open seasonally), as well as a day spa and fitness center. Breakfast and lunch are served daily at the on-site restaurant, and dinner is available in season. Suites are pleasantly decorated, though some of the furnishings are dated, and range in size from one- to five-bedroom units with separate living rooms and either kitchenettes or full kitchens. Some feature lovely ocean views and larger penthouses are also available with fireplaces and panoramic views. Unfortunately, the beachfront location means suites are pricey and get outside noise, but that's the trade-off guests make to experience this top boardwalk hotel and its lively atmosphere. There are several other comparable properties in the area like the Wild Dunes Inn, Biscayne Suites, or the Beach Club Suites, so travelers should compare rates.

Dunes Manor Hotel, Court & Suites
2800 Baltimore Ave.

The Dunes Manor Hotel is a 170-room property with a refined, distinctive look, complete with Victorian-style details in the public spaces. The guest rooms are not so unique however, as they have fairly generic, unremarkable decor. Each room does have a private balcony overlooking the beach. The hotel is located right on the ocean, with lovely views of sand and sea. It is situated in an ideal spot that is near the boardwalk, but far enough off the main drag for peace and quiet.
