Ryad Mogador Kasbah
Zone Touristique Agdal

The Ryad Mogador Agdal is a large, mid-range resort-style hotel located south of the medina adjacent to the Agdal Gardens, but it's a distance from most attractions, about a 10-minute drive to Djemaa el Fna square. The rooms are tidy, if a bit generic, with furnished balconies, though there's no Wi-Fi or in-room refreshments. The large outdoor pool has plenty of loungers, but it's unheated, and the water can be cold. There's also a fair amount of air traffic from nearby Marrakech Menara Airport. But for those who want a pool, spa, and fitness facilities -- and prefer to stay outside the medina -- rates are a real bargain. Travelers looking for accommodations with more personality and closer to the medina's attractions should look at the Riad La Porte Rouge.

Hotel Marrakech le Tichka
Semlalia BP 894, Route de Casablanca

The Hotel Marrakech le Tichka is a mid-range, 138-room hotel featuring impressive Morocco-inspired interiors set in a quiet New City neighborhood. Its location a bit away from the medina means it's not ideal for tourists who prefer to explore the city on foot -- although taxis are quick and plentiful. Simple rooms are adequate with many extending to pleasant -- though not always furnished -- terraces overlooking the rear garden. The alfresco terrace and pool make for a particularly peaceful place to unwind and, for those who'd rather stay away from the more hectic side of Marrakech, it's an excellent value. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Palm Plaza Marrakech Hotel & Spa
Avenue du 7ieme Art, Zone Touristique Agdal

Palm Plaza Marrakech Hotel & Spa is an upscale hotel with 232 rooms, located in Agdal, a new residential area of Marrakech. The immediate area doesn't offer much in the way of restaurants or attractions, but the hotel provides a handful of services to alleviate that stranded feeling, including an hourly shuttle to the Medina. There's a large swimming pool and gardens that are never crowded along with a small children’s play area. Rooms are modern and some have balconies with Atlas Mountain views. However, the Wi-Fi signal strength can be weak in rooms, rendering it difficult to stream movies or make Skype calls. Those in search of a more traditional and boutique experience may wish to compare rates at Riad Noos Noos, which is directly in the middle of the Medina and has individually styled rooms decorated with local handicrafts.

Royal Mansour Marrakech
Rue Abou Abbas El Sebti

The King of Morocco spared no expense when he commissioned the Royal Mansour to be built on the edge of the historic Medina, resulting in a sprawling, gilded palace that truly earns its royal title. At this luxury property, each tile mosaic and carved wooden ceiling was crafted by an army of skilled artisans; the exquisite spa is rife with latticework; and an outdoor pool is encased in a beautiful glass pavilion. Three restaurants cover French, Moroccan, and Mediterranean cuisine respectively, and are helmed by a three-Michelin star chef. Even the most basic of the 53 rooms here is a two-story private riad with its own plunge pool; some have full kitchens, rooftop terraces, and even hammams. This is the most expensive hotel in Morocco, with the most extravagant rooms costing up to $20K per night. It's a tourist destination in itself, a historic sight in the making, and made for those to whom price is irrelevant.

Riad Dar Dialkoum
317 Derb Jdid, Derb Nakhla, Bab Doukkala

Riad Dar Dialkoum, with its simply styled traditional interiors, encompasses four lounges, two courtyards -- one with a plunge pool and orange trees -- a rooftop terrace, and seven guest rooms. Located at the northwest end of the medina, it's a 15- to 20-minute walk to the main souks and to Jemaa el Fna Square, and a five-minute walk to the main bus and taxi station. The rooftop terrace, with its Berber tent and pergola and plenty of seating, is a delightful place to relax or have a meal. Riad Dar Dialkoum is more traditionally homey than luxuriously chic -- there's no hammam or spa facilities on-site -- although the owners can arrange for these services. Guests looking for more of a luxury retreat might want to check out ZamZam Riad and Spa Marrakech -- about a 20-minute walk east in the medina -- at higher rates.

Jnane Tamsna
Douar Abiad, La Palmeraie

A luxurious property within a walled garden on a protected palm grove 20 minutes from Marrakech, the 24-room Jnane Tamsna offers a uniquely elegant retreat for couples, families, and celebrities alike. The property contains suites with fireplaces and verandas, sumptuous private villas, and five swimming pools, as well as a restaurant serving dishes made with ingredients from the on-site organic garden. Owned by an architect and landscape designer, this stylish estate offers the splendor of a five-pearl hotel combined with the personalized service of a boutique -- an ideal setting for those who prefer the calm of a distant oasis to the bustle of the ancient Medina. For a nearby upscale hotel with a peaceful vibe, though at a much lower price point, guests could try the Murano Resort Marrakech.

Palmeraie Village Residence
Les Jardins de la Palmeraie II, Circuit de la Palmeraie

The Palmeraie Village Residence is part of Palmeraie Resorts, a huge complex of hotels centered around a championship golf course just outside of the Medina in Marrakech's palm grove district. Of the many hotels and facilities clustered within the complex, the Village Residence is billed as a family-friendly option due to its 143 large apartments and 23 villas, all with kitchens and balconies or terraces. This upscale property has a huge outdoor pool, but travelers should note that most of the amenities available on the sprawling grounds are actually at the other hotels, and it's a hike to many of them. The Village has one of its own restaurants, but the casual fare won't impress anyone coming to Morocco to indulge in the country's fantastic cuisine. Also, apartments don't have Wi-Fi.

Hotel & Ryads Barriere Le Naoura Marrakech
Rue Djebel Alakhdar, Bab Doukala

Hotel & Ryads Naoura Barriere is a large, family-friendly luxury property with 85 rooms and suites and 26 Ryads (villas). The hotel is near Jemaa El Fna Square and between the old area of the Medina and the new town of Gueliz, but the ambience is relatively calm, despite the large number of children who stay here. The ryads are an excellent value for families and have kitchenettes, private pools, and up to seven bedrooms. Along with a spa, a Turkish bath, and a large outdoor pool, the property offers multiple play areas for children, kids' toiletries, and special menus. There's also a gym at the hotel, but it's old machines are in need of an update.

Riad Jona
Riad zitoune el kedim, 34, Derb Jdid

The seven-room Riad Jona is a particularly attractive, upscale guesthouse located at the southern end of the medina, near the Bahia Palace, within a 10- to 15-minute walk to Djemaa el Fna square. Interiors have elegant touches, like filigree lanterns, ironwork, and scatted rose petals, adding to the romantic vibe. Facilities include an above-ground rooftop pool and a hot tub (for a fee). Rooms are elegantly finished, especially the suites, and lunch and dinner, prepared by a resident chef, is excellent. Those looking for more fashion-forward decor could try the Riad Elizabeth.

Adama Resort
Route d'Amizmiz, KM 7,5

The 57-room Adama Resort is an upscale complex set in large, attractive gardens in the countryside outside the city of Marrakech. This villa-only resort draws heavily on various Moorish and Moroccan architectural traditions while providing all the facilities you'd expect from a self-contained vacation resort including pools, spa, and a restaurant. Kitchen-equipped villas are spacious and stylish, though limited dining and no local supermarket can be an issue. All in all, for families with kids prioritizing relaxing by the pool over exploring old Marrakech, this is an attractive option, though sightseers might want to look elsewhere. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
