Sunset Plaza Beach Resort & Spa
Diego Rivera 121, Zona Hotelera Las Glorias

The luxury Sunset Plaza Beach Resort provides an intimate and high-end hotel stay right on Las Glorias Beach. The entire resort reflects a contemporary and stylish vibe that focuses heavily on natural stone elements and vibrant colors. A sheer vastness defines the property as well, throughout its public and private spaces. All 80 rooms and suites feature oceanfront views and come with butler service and a customizable aromatherapy menu. There are three outdoor pools (including one for adults), a kids' club, and the decadent Zen Set Spa with treatment rooms. All-inclusive packages are available at the two restaurants and two bars. The Sunset Plaza is a bit pricier than the next door Plaza Pelicanos, which has less polished decor but a similar stretch of beach and amenities.

Barcelo Puerto Vallarta
Zona Hotelera Sur, Km. 11,5

The upscale, 316-room Barcelo Puerto Vallarta is one of the best family-friendly all-inclusive resorts in the region, and towers above the beautiful Mismaloya Beach. It features several blue-tiled pools with beautiful bay views and groomed jungle grounds, as well as a jam-packed activities schedule -- aerobics, water sports, ping-pong tournaments, beach volleyball, archery, and basketball are all on the menu (though the animation team might be less present during the off season). Other kid-friendly features include the kids' club for ages 5 to 12, games room, and nightly theater shows. Couples might not appreciate that the pool and swim-up bar can be surrounded by screaming tots, however. The beach is generally more peaceful, though vendors can be a nuisance. Spacious rooms all have balconies with at least partial ocean views, and the property is a bit secluded, which is a positive for many. Those looking for something in the Hotel Zone might consider the Sunset Plaza Beach Resort and Spa.

Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort
Ave De Las Garzas 136, Zona Hotelera

The 259-room, all-inclusive Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort is priced at the higher end of resorts in the Hotel Zone of Puerto Vallarta, and it scores on some counts but fails on others. The rooms are modern and spacious with some gorgeous ocean views (plus coffeemakers and minibars). Restaurants are varied from an above-average buffet to fine French dining. The infinity edge adults-only pool and a luxe spa are havens from the family-centered kids' club. However, with charges for spotty Wi-Fi and short staffing at the bars, the high price point can be hard to justify.

Secrets Vallarta Bay Puerto Vallarta
David Alfaro Siquerios No. 164, Col Zona Hotelera Las Glorias

Secrets Vallarta Bay is a luxurious, adult-only, all-inclusive resort right on the beach in tourist-friendly Puerto Vallarta. With 271 suites, it's not the biggest resort around -- the smaller size means less of a wait and better service. This property does a lot of things right: luxe rooms with butler service, unlimited premium alcohol, and gorgeous pools -- however, the vibe can get rowdy (blame the combination of all-inclusive booze and a swim-up bar). Guests should also note that some of the restaurants and daily entertainment are next door at the family-friendly Now Amber Puerto Vallarta. Still, Secrets is a quick drive to the airport and downtown, making it a convenient spot for an upscale couples getaway on the beach.

La Quinta Gran Bahia Cuastecomates
Bahia de Cuastecomates s/n, Cuastecomate Costalegre Jalisco

The 75-room La Quinta Gran Bahia Cuastecomates is a mid-range property set on a beautiful beach along Mexico's Pacific coast. Guest rooms are generic but modern, featuring black wooden furniture, flat-screen TVs, air conditioners, and large balconies. There's some wear and tear throughout the property, but it doesn't pose much of an issue. The lively hotel is geared toward Mexican families, with activities around the pool during the day, and nightly entertainment that lasts until late. All-inclusive packages are available for those who want to eat all three meals at the restaurant, though food receives mixed reviews and several restaurants are nearby. There's plenty to like about this hotel for vacationing families, but couples should look elsewhere.

Verana
Calle Zaragoza No 404

Verana is an adults-only boutique resort nestled in a hillside high atop the bay of Yelapa, a small village on the coast of Mexico that is only reachable by boat. Forty-five minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, Verana offers eight uniquely designed, rustic houses that include completely open-air, gazebo-style rooms perched out over the jungle; some have private pools. While facilities are minimal and not exactly upscale, this secluded jungle experience -- which includes a lovely restaurant, spa and infinity pool -- is popular among couples looking to get away from it all. Due to the isolated location, though, it takes some effort to explore Yelapa beyond the property.

Grand Miramar All Luxury Suites & Residences
Calle Paseo de los Corales 139, Conchas Chinas

Perched in the swanky precincts of Conchas Chinas, the Grand Miramar Resort & Spa offers some of the most spectacular views in all of Puerto Vallarta, visible from almost any corner of the 100-suite luxury resort. The property has 80 massive suites and 20 family-sized residential units, all with balconies, bay views, and separate living areas with sitting and dining space and generously equipped kitchenettes. The resort features several pools, including one with a swim-up bar; a rooftop, adults-only infinity pool; and a big whirlpool. There are five restaurants and bars (a swanky rooftop lounge among them), plus a decent spa and gym and tons of outdoor lounge spots. On the downside, it requires a shuttle ride to reach the beach or downtown. There are plenty of luxury alternatives in nearby Marina Vallarta, but if views are what you’re after, Grand Miramar will be hard to beat.

Plaza Pelicanos Grand Beach Resort
Jose Clemente Orozco # 131, Zona Hotelera Las Glorias

Most of the 100 rooms in this mid-range oceanfront hotel are drab and dated -- with the best-looking ones being the 15 on-site timeshares located in the tall tower. Of course, only a few of those are available at any given time, so you'll likely be stuck with the standard rooms -- and the on-site sales pitches to purchase a timeshare can feel invasive. But other features, such as the beachfront location with quick walking access to downtown; the beautifully groomed gardens; the spacious pool with infinity edge and swim-up bar; and an outdoor tennis court make this a great option for the price. Be warned, though, not all rooms have balconies, and some face the noisy street at the entrance of the property.

Vallarta Shores
Calle Malecon 400

At the end of a cobblestone street in the Zona Romantica of Puerto Vallarta’s old town, the upscale Vallarta Shores offers 15 polished, residential-style suites with colorful decor and local charm. Full kitchens, living rooms, and large ocean view patios come standard. Posh Sky Suites and a Penthouse feature three or four bedrooms, private pools, and panoramic ocean views. There’s a beachfront infinity pool and a hot tub, as well as a furnished beachside terrace offering excellent sunset views -- but there’s no restaurant, bar, spa, or fitness center. The hotel has its own private area on Playa Los Muertos, one of the city’s most popular beaches. Wi-Fi and parking are free. The nearby Resorts by Pinnacle 180 offers similar residential-style suites, plus a bar and a spa, but it’s not on the beach.

Cabo Blanco Hotel
Armada y Puerto de la Navidad s/n, Fracc. Pueblo Nuevo

The Cabo Blanco Hotel is a peaceful value property in Barra de Navidad adjacent to a marina. Dated guest rooms and villas have beige wicker furniture, motel-style comforters, flat-screen TVs, and air conditioners. There's a large pool and separate kiddy pool with plenty of loungers, and the beach is a 10-minute walk from the property. There's also a restaurant and bar that's open for all three meals, and some rates include breakfast. Other on-site features include tennis courts, a volleyball net, playground, a massage treatment room, and event room. Note that Wi-Fi isn't available in the rooms, and there have been complaints of non-guests using the pool.
