Hotel Centro Cavour
Via Cavour 237

Hotel Centro Cavour is a centrally located budget property, less than a 10-minute walk from the Colosseum and close to many of Rome's other top sights, as well as restaurants, shopping, and public transportation. While the hotel's 26 modest guest rooms are well-maintained, the traditional decor of cherry-wood furniture and matching bedspreads and curtains is a bit dated. The hotel lacks common space and doesn't offer breakfast, but there's a 24-hour front desk, and free coffee for guests to sustain sightseeing energy. Those simply looking for a tidy place to shower and sleep will find exactly that here, but travelers seeking a more upscale stay nearby can consider Duca D’Alba Hotel

Hotel Bonvecchiati
Calle Carlo Goldoni San Marco 4488

The 124-room Bonvecchiati Hotel, opened in 1790, is an upper-middle-range, historic property located in the heart of the city with its own water taxi dock. Piazza San Marco is a short three-minute walk away, and most of the city’s major museums are accessible on foot. The Bonvecchiati has slightly formal and old-fashioned Venetian decor. Rooms vary in size, style, and views -- some are modern and sleek with crimson accents while others are traditionally elegant with dramatic long drapes that match upholstered furniture. There are a gym, sauna, and steam room on-site and the restaurant serves quality Venetian cuisine. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Palazzo Cardinal Cesi
Via della Conciliazione n. 51, Zona Vaticano

The 30-room Palazzo Cardinal Cesi is a mid-range hotel located right by the Vatican City and within walking distance of several top sights. Traditional rooms offer minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no coffeemakers, bathrooms are small, and some rooms get street noise. Hotel features are limited, but there's a tasty breakfast that's included in the rates as well as a bar area with beer and wine. The hotel also has a delightful courtyard garden with charming topiaries and plants as well as seating, plus event space is available for a variety of functions including weddings. Travelers might want to compare rates with some similar properties in the area, such as Relais Vatican View and Sant'Anna Hotel.

Hotel Greif
Piazza Walther Platz, Entrance Via Della Rena Raingasse

Hotel Greif is an upscale design-focused boutique housed in an ancient inn that dates back to medieval times. Extensive renovations brought the hotel firmly into the 21st century while maintaining much of the building's original period charm. Each of its 33 guest rooms and suites was styled by an individual artist, mostly with artwork ranging from sketches to sculptures. A superb setting overlooking the city's main square is also a highlight, as is their excellent breakfast service. Facilities are generally limited, and you'll have to pop over to the sister hotel for a swim. Overall, however, its an impressive and genuinely unique property with a winning location. The nearby Stadt Hotel Citta is equally well-positioned with an on-site wellness center.

Hotel Abbaruja
Via Sa Minda Longa 1, Località Pittulongu

The 16-room Hotel Abbaruja is a small two-and-a-half-pearl option located in the seaside town of Pittulongu, about a 10-minute drive from Olbia. Guests can walk to the beach in 10 minutes, and there are restaurants, bars, and a supermarket nearby, though a car is helpful for exploring the Costa Smeralda. Many guests return year after year, noting that the family running the hotel are extremely helpful. Rooms are clean and feature air-conditioning, minibars, and TVs, though the style is dated and they're compact. The gardens are a highlight here, and guests can eat the free breakfast there or in the cozy breakfast room. Travelers who would prefer to stay in the historic center of Olbia could check out the Hotel Panorama, which has a small gym and spa.

Casacau
Via in Arcione 94

Truly stylish apartment-hotels are a rarity in central Rome, particularly around the Trevi Fountain. Casacau is a rare exception, then, with boho-chic decor that contrasts its centuries-old architecture in beautiful ways. There are only seven apartments here, and configurations include studios and one-bedroom units that can fit up to five. Thoughtful details include -- of course -- perks like breakfast bags full of local pastries delivered fresh every morning, local coffee, art books. The poshest apartments have their own saunas or terraces. Despite being in a heavily trafficked area just down from Trevi Fountain, the interiors stay silent when the windows are shut. You won't find much like this nearby, though Trevi Palace Luxury Apartments might be worth a look as well -- it's cheaper but far less stylish.

H10 Roma Citta
Via Amedeo Avogadro, 35

Clean, contemporary (if generic) rooms with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks; free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel; a large business center; and a free shuttle to the city center make the upper-middle-range H10 Roma Citta an adequate pick for the business traveler. But the on-site restaurant is mediocre, some rooms are really tight, and the hotel itself is far from tourist sites. Leisure travelers might want to consider other properties that are more centrally located.

Hotel Bristol Palace
Via Venti Settembre 35

The Hotel Bristol Palace certainly stands out as one of the Genoa's more elegant upscale properties, and features a genuinely stunning spiral staircase. Its central location on the equally attractive Via XX Settembre means most tourist attractions are within easy reach on foot. Some of the 133 classically styled rooms and suites are furnished with genuine antiques, though entry-level rooms lack hot drink facilities and can be small. Beautifully decorated dining areas and quality food add to the hotel's high-end ambience, however don't expect any spa or fitness facilities. Those looking for a spa may prefer the comparatively priced Melia Genova, though it doesn't have the same wow-factor.

Magna Pars Suites
Via Vincenzo Forcella 6

This five-pearl perfume-factory-turned-hotel is one of the top boutique hotels in Milan. It's far from the city center, but its location in a trendy design district seems appropriate for its fashionable vibe. The 39 chic rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electronic wall panels that control the temperature. On-site features are what’s expected of a luxury boutique hotel: a stylish Italian restaurant and bar, a rooftop and garden terrace, and a modern (though small) gym and spa with massages available. But the open-air lobby might be too cold in the winters for some. Travelers may want to compare rates with the Boscolo Milano, which has an indoor pool, a larger spa, and bolder, more colorful interior design.

Elizabeth Unique Hotel
Via delle Colonnette 35

The Elizabeth Unique Hotel is one of the best boutique hotels to open in Rome in 2018, and is helping to change the once-tired state of hotels in the Eternal City. Expect upscale home vibes and a faultlessly contemporary style that's equal parts edgy, timeless, and refined. Art plays a major role in creating the hotel's atmosphere, helping create a cohesive package that complements Rome's own historic beauty. The 33 rooms include perks like Nespresso machines, Bose speaker pods, free minibars, and even double rainfall showers in some units. There's a full-service restaurant and a handsome library for chilling out, and partnerships with local purveyors like Galleria Russo add authentic local charm. Travelers seeking a quiet, art-heavy alternative nearby might check out Hotel Vilon, which has Art Nouveau style, but is far pricier.
