Hotel President
Via Antonio Salandra 6
Hotel Venezia
Piazza 27 Ottobre, 91, angolo Via Teatro Vecchio

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Venezia caters to business travelers in the heart of Mestre. It's convenient for travelers with commitments in this urban center, but it's not the best base for tourists exploring Venice. However, rates are cheaper here than hotels on the historic island, which is about a 20-minute bus ride from the property. Its 100 guest rooms have traditional decor, and all come with AC, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but amenities are generally dated, and many units show wear. Other than several meeting rooms, facilities are limited to an elegant breakfast room and its adjoining garden patio. Cheaper rooms can be found at Hotel Delle Rose, and although it lacks style, it has a small outdoor patio and is closer to Venice.

Athenaeum Hotel
Via Camillo Cavour 88

This 60-room boutique hotel is a six-minute walk to the Academy Gallery housing the famous David statue. As a mid-range hotel, the Athenaeum has unremarkable (at times unstylish) decor but more amenities than other properties in the area, including a bar and Italian restaurant, a beautiful outdoor courtyard, and a small fitness center. The hotel provides a free breakfast buffet with cheeses, cold cuts, and fruit (hot dishes are also available for a fee). Simple, minimal rooms have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but guests reveal that some could use new carpeting. Guests may want to compare rates with Hotel Embassy, an upscale hotel also within walking distance to major attractions.

Hotel Gardenia
Via Nazionale 20
Hotel Central
Corso Italia 254
Hotel Cristallo
Via Dolomiti Est 40

This mid-range Alpine-style hotel is located in Canazei center, a five-minute walk to cable cars and a ski bus stop, and draws couples and families looking to hike, climb, mountain bike, and ski in the famous Dolomites (a UNESCO heritage site). The rooms are simple yet spacious, and most have balconies with views of the mountains. Breakfast and dinner at the on-site restaurant are included for guests, as is access to the Wellness Center, which is typical for the area. Note that the hotel is seasonal, open from December to Easter and from April to September. It's worth comparing prices with the Wellness Hotel Lupo Bianco, which has a prettier setting and ski-in, ski-out access.

Hotel La Perla
Strada Col Alt 105
Hotel Bristol
Via Capo 22

The 142-room Bristol Hotel near the center of Sorrento is a popular choice for events, as well as for groups. It consists of three large concrete buildings; common areas are plain and slightly formal, with inlay marble floors and mirrored elevator doors. While the front of the hotel overlooks a street, the back abuts a cliffside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Many of the hotel’s facilities, including the multiple restaurants, pool, and rooftop bar, take full advantage of the spectacular views afforded by this position. Rooms are spacious and most provide sweeping views, but decor varies widely -- some are a touch dated and unfinished while others are appealing and modern.
