Montigo Resorts Nongsa
Jl. Hang Lekir

The Montigo Resorts Nongsa is a luxury resort with a lush, remote location on the northern coast of Indonesia's Batam island, a 40-minute ferry ride from Singapore. Its 88 rooms comprise private villas, where plunge pools and HD TVs come standard, and minimalist interiors are swish. The likewise high-end restaurants and bar accompany two infinity pools with two-person sunbeds. A great kids' club attracts families, while Indonesian spa treatments are especially popular with couples. Some find the beach a bit disappointing, but most guests enjoy evening DJs that liven up the otherwise serene setting. The Batam View Beach Resort is less luxurious, but also less pricey.

Mercure Bali Legian
Jl. Legian no. 328 Legian Kelod

This four-pearl, 321-room upscale hotel has a modern design and tropical setting. It's a five-minute walk from Legian Beach, and a stone's throw from numerous shops, bars, and restaurants. Rooms are spacious and modern, and all include flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms add balconies and private pools. The hotel has two infinity pools, including a rooftop pool with a lounge. The restaurant serves international cuisines and a special kids' menu, and a generous breakfast buffet is available for a fee. Other facilities include a separate children's pool, free kids' club, full-service spa, modern fitness center, business center, and meeting rooms. Travelers looking for an oceanfront property should consider rates at the Bali Mandira Beach Resort & Spa instead, which adds a free breakfast.

Pullman Bali Legian Beach
Jl. Melasti 1

The Pullman Bali Legian Beach is an upscale 353-room resort located directly across the street from Legian Beach in Kuta. Rooms range in size and level of luxury, from standard Deluxe Rooms to Two-Bedroom Suites. Those facing the street can be noisy. Two large pools (one on the rooftop) with poolside bars and terrific sunset views, as well as a full-service spa, make this hotel a terrific choice for guests looking to relax. There’s also a 24-hour business center, a well-stocked gym, and meeting spaces available. A delicious and varied international buffet is available in one of the three on-site restaurants, but it costs extra.

The Trans Resort Bali
Jl. Sunset Rd., Kerobokan

The Trans Resort Bali is a luxury resort with lots of contemporary Balinese style near plenty of galleries, shops, and restaurants. The 200 lavish, modern rooms include minibars, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, and 48-inch flat-screen TVs, and the marble bathrooms are lovely. Some rooms feature balconies with jetted tubs and daybeds, and villas include their own private pools. The resort has a scenic waterfall and impressive outdoor swimming pool that ends in a man-made sand beach, plus a full-service Balinese spa, modern fitness center, and colorful kids' center. There's also a restaurant and rooftop bar with beach and sunset views. Travelers seeking a smaller, more intimate hotel might want to consider the nearby Bali Rich Luxury Villas, which tends to have lower rates.

Grand Hyatt Bali
Kawasan Wisata, Nusa Dua BTDC

The beachfront Grand Hyatt Bali is a lavish resort in central Nusa Dua, across the street from the Bali Collection's upscale shops. This is a massive property, and the 636 spacious rooms have marble bathrooms, plush beds, and flat-screen TVs. Balconies are a nice addition, and some offer sea views. Style is pleasantly modern, but not the most chic we've seen, and some rooms look a bit tired. The resort has several restaurants, a white-sand beach with water sports, five swimming pools, a full-service spa, and a big health club with a gym, squash courts, saunas, and plunge pools. While not as luxurious as the nearby St. Regis, the Grand Hyatt is comparable in quality to the neighboring Melia Bali Indonesia, where rates are significantly lower.

Pesona Beach Resort & Spa
Jl. Raya Trawangan

The 22-room Pesona Beach Resort & Spa is a mid-range beachfront property that's right in Gili Trawangan's central hub. It's a short walk from the ferry dock, as well as a number of restaurants and bars. Rooms and bungalows are bright and basic, decorated with just a dash of tropical flare. They come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and safes, and most have furnished balconies or terraces. However, Wi-Fi is only available in common areas and the beach isn't the best on the island. The well-liked restaurant serves Indian and Western fare, and the Skylounge is popular (as is the pool). Travelers who don't mind spending a bit more could check out the Hotel Vila Ombak, where villas have open-air living spaces and private pools.

The Chandi Boutique Resort & Spa
Jl. Raya Senggigi Km 5

This intimate upper-middle-range resort is set along the beach in a quiet area, about a 10-minute drive from the main strip of restaurants and bars in Senggigi. The 15 rooms are pristine and have outdoor showers, terraces, and flat-screen TVs, but the free Wi-Fi is often slow and decor is a bit plain. Although the beach is narrow and the sea isn't swimmable without beach shoes, the property’s sleek infinity pool overlooking the ocean is a favorite hang-out spot for most guests. The on-site restaurant is well-reviewed and offers a free quality a la carte breakfast, plus there's a comfy, casual seaside bar. A pleasant spa is a nice perk, but there's no gym. Travelers looking to be closer to the town center should consider Qunci Villas Hotel, though rates are a bit higher.

Kila Senggigi Beach Lombok
Senggigi Beach St.

Set amid sprawling gardens, this upper-middle-range beachside property has 150 traditionally decorated rooms in downtown Senggigi. Despite its setting near ample restaurants and bars, the property is quiet. Rooms will either feel charming or dated to guests, but they feature air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and furnished terraces overlooking the sea or garden. Appealing amenities include a lagoon swimming pool, three ocean-view restaurants, a simple spa, and two meeting rooms. Though the property has a laid-back vibe, guests are kept busy with a number of recreational options, such as two tennis courts, beach volleyball, and water activities. Travelers wanting a more modern property should consider the Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort, though rates are slightly higher.

Qunci Villas Hotel
Jl. Raya Mangsit

Set along Mangsit beach on the island of Lombok, the Qunci Villas Hotel is an upscale retreat that mostly attracts couples looking for a romantic getaway. The 75 appealing room options include rooms with private pools and three-bedroom villas set atop a hill. All earth-tone rooms have minibars, safes, and furnished outdoor spaces. A good range of features includes two restaurants, free breakfasts, ocean-view bar, spa offering couples' massages, and three swimming pools -- one adult-only. There are no kid-centric facilities or gym, however. Also note the beach is narrow and can be rocky. It's worth comparing rates with the more striking and smaller 40-room Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa.

Furama Villas & Spa Ubud
Jl. Raya Mambal, Banjar Bindu

If you want to get away from it all, three-pearl Furama Villas & Spa Ubud just might be the spot for you. It's a 25-minute drive from the center of Ubud, tucked amid rolling greenery, and has a hushed, secluded ambience. The 24 villas are private and classic, with details like canopy beds and antique-style furniture, plus outdoor living rooms, private pools, and massive bathrooms. They do look a bit dated and tired, and we spotted some tube TVs during our visit, so upgrades might be due. The small spa has four treatment rooms, and a scheduled shuttle runs into Ubud five times daily. Travelers who'd prefer to be closer to central Ubud might consider KajaNe Mua Private Villa & Mansion instead -- the villas there are a bit nicer.
