The Lis
Calle Margaluz 15

The Lis Hotel is an independent, budget-level property located in the shabbier outskirts of the small resort of Cala Major. While showing signs of renovation throughout, most of the 18 apartments have dated decor and look shabby, and lack basics such as air-conditioning. However, all come with kitchenettes that have fridges, sinks, cooktops, and kettles, plus units have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. A small pool area has comfy loungers but it's prone to shade, though there's a rooftop panoramic terrace with hot tub that guests rave about. Breakfast and drinks are also great value, and rates can be a bargain -- especially for groups. An even cheaper option nearby, however, is La Mimosa Guesthouse, which is better for couples and single travelers though farther from the beach.

La Mimosa Guesthouse
Calle Suecia 5

La Mimosa Guesthouse is a two-pearl, bed-and-breakfast-style property set in a quaint 19th-century manor house about a 20- minute drive west of the capital, Palma. There's not a great deal in the immediate area, but the beaches and low-key nightlife of Cala Major are within walking distance. Like most of the property, the 16 guest rooms are simple and old-fashioned, with minimal amenities -- there's no AC or even TVs -- though some feature spacious terraces or sea views. A garden pool provides a pleasant space to sunbathe or cool off, and most guests enjoy the free buffet breakfast. All in all, it's just about as low-frills as you'll find in the area with prices to match; the budget-conscious should also look at the nearby Lis Hotel, which is equally cheap but has apartment-style accommodations.

Citric Hotel Soller
urbanizacion de Muleta s/n

The 46-room Citric Hotel is a budget property set on the west side of Port de Soller's picturesque bay, within walking distance of its bars, restaurants, and long sandy beach. While some rooms were renovated in 2014 and are bright and modern, most feel a little dated, with old-fashioned bathrooms and no air-conditioning. Many rooms feature balconies with lovely sea views, while a spacious terrace at the front of the hotel overlooks the bay. A simple restaurant serves breakfast and dinner (not included), and free, reliable Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Although a little rough around the edges, the hotel has a certain charm and is reasonably priced for the location. Hotel Eden Nord, which includes a small pool, is another value option in the area.

EcoHotel & Spa Monnaber Nou
Predio Monnaber Nou, Desde la autopista Palma - Alcudia, coger salida numero 37.

One of the most outstanding attractions of the Monnaber Nou is its setting surrounded by picturesque countryside with the majestic backdrop of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains. The upper-middle-range hotel itself is certainly a draw too, set in a 17th-century country house brimming with historic rustic charm. Its 25 rooms are clean and well-maintained, with most offering country views, though a number of rooms are located in a very separate annex. The surrounding farmland produces much of the ingredients used in the excellent on-site restaurant, which also opens to a terrace with lovely panoramas. Two pools and a cozy spa provide ample relaxation space, even at peak season. And with bike rentals, horse stables, and plenty of local footpaths there are multiple ways to explore the area. The only real downside is much of the interiors feel rather old-fashioned, especially compared to the rustic-luxe finish of the comparable Son Brull Hotel, which is undeniably chicer though more expensive.

Araxa Hotel
Calle Pilar Juncosa 22

The Araxa Hotel is an adult-only mid-range property housed in a fine piece of purpose-built, 1950s architecture tucked away in a leafy suburb of Palma. While its location is within easy reach of the marina and Bellver castle, it's not walking distance from city center and most of its tourist attractions. Rooms are spacious and clean, if dated, with many featuring garden-view balconies -- though others overlook an adjacent block. Tall hedges give the garden a pleasantly secluded feel, and there is a good range of facilities, including an outdoor pool, spa facilities, and a decent restaurant. More contemporary rooms plus an adult-only pool can be found at the nearby Hotel Isla Mallorca, though the property allows kids.

Llenaire Hotel
Avenida Llenaire Km. 3,8, PO Box 152

Llenaire Hotel is an upscale family-run property set in an elegant 19th-century manor house awash with original features and furnishings. The rural setting is peaceful and picturesque, and it's only a five-minute  drive to the popular resort area of Port de Pollensa. The hotel's own restaurant is impressive (if a little pricey) and uses ingredients grown on the property. The 12 rooms are spacious and quiet, with plenty of traditional charm, though don't expect speedy Wi-Fi. Waking up to freshly laid, cooked-to-order eggs is a nice perk, while an infinity pool offers fine mountain views and a touch of luxury. Overall, this is certainly a contender for one of the best rural hotels in the area, though for a seriously upscale rustic experience check out Son Brull Hotel, which also has a deluxe spa.

Hotel Bendinat
Calle Andreu Ferret Sobral 1

The upper-middle-range, 54-room Bendinat Hotel is nestled in peaceful, manicured grounds overlooking the west side of Palma Bay. Set in a quiet Portals Nous neighborhood, the vibe is particularly secluded while still being within walking distance of its sandy beaches and dining. Like the architecture, rooms are split between traditional Majorcan and more contemporary styling; all open to outdoor space and most have at least partial sea views. While facilities are fairly limited and the pool small, dining from the sea-view terraces is a real highlight. For couples seeking minimal distractions and picturesque setting to unwind in, this is a great pick. Though a little dated, the nearby HSM Maria Luisa is a better option for those looking for more pool space and on-site activities.

Es Moli Hotel
Carretera Valldemossa s/n

Es Moli is a family-run, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel housed in building that dates back to the 15th century. One main draw is its hilltop setting overlooking the pretty village of Deia and surrounding mountains. It also has a wonderful heated outdoor pool—fed from the hotel's own spring water—though it's too deep for young children. The 87 guest rooms are a touch old-fashioned and may not suit all tastes, but bathrooms have been updated and most units open to balconies or terrace with superb views. Another impressive feature is access to an exclusive rocky cove via a free shuttle. Overall, it's one of the area's more unique hotels but one that feels a little tired in places. Couples looking for a more romantic experience might favor the boutique Hotel D'es Puig set right in the village.

Fiesta Hotel Cala Gracio
Crta. Cala Gracio Sn

This small, adult-only all-inclusive is located directly on Cala Graçió, a cute sandy cove a short drive from Sant Antoni. The 50 modern, urban-chic (if unadorned) rooms have flat-screen TVs, jetted tubs, and coffeemakers, and most have furnished balconies. Hotel amenities include a small oval pool, a buffet restaurant, and a bar with garden views, plus guests have access to facilities at neighboring sister property Tanit. Unfortunately, the Tanit is a huge family-friendly hotel and therefore busy and loud, which makes Fiesta Hotel Cala Graçió less quiet and intimate than one would expect of a hotel this size.

Sa Carrotja, Finca d'Agroturisme
Diseminado Sa Carrotja 7

Housed in a beautifully renovated 16th-century home, the three-and-a-half-pearl, adult-only Sa Carrotja is packed with Mediterranean charm. Its 12 rooms are simple but elegant, with plenty of lovely original architectural details plus free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. Many rooms also have furnished terraces that overlook the peaceful grounds dotted with flowers and fruit trees. A wonderful breakfast spread is offered daily, and a tasty regional menu is served for dinner on two covered terraces with low lights and a hushed atmosphere. The seasonally-heated pool is a quiet spot for a lazy day in the sun, with loungers, straw umbrellas, and an honor bar. Families and those looking to stay within walking distance of the beach may want to compare rates at the Blau Colonia Sant Jordi Resort & Spa.
