Ko'a Kea Hotel & Resort
2251 Poipu Road

This 121-room luxury hotel just might be the perfect place for a reclusive film star to hide from adoring fans. For those who like their vacation experience plush and focused on their needs, the Koa Kea is an excellent alternative to the area's larger resort chains. Rooms have a subtle, beachy style and luxe features include fine Egyptian linens, Italian marble bathrooms, and espresso machines. Additionally, the resort has a high-end fitness center with individual cable-TV monitors. With just one pool and restaurant, it may lack some features of the nearby Hyatt mega-resort -- but the beach here is better, the price tag slightly lower, and the service more attentive and pampering.

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel
2570 Kalakaua Avenue

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is a three-pearl ocean-view property across the street from Waikiki’s Kuhio Beach. It’s 645 air-conditioned rooms have surf-inspired interiors with flat-screen TVs, video game systems, mini-fridges, and balconies (most with ocean or partial-ocean views). However, the style is tired and noise can be an issue. The outdoor pool also has ocean views and is surrounded by lounge chairs and umbrellas, though it's small. Happy hour specials, live music, and Aston’s lively tiki-inspired restaurant all receive mostly positive reviews from previous guests. Hotel freebies include DVD and video game rentals, beach chairs, and daily newspapers. For an oceanfront stay with fresher rooms, a bigger pool, and free daily fitness classes (as opposed to the Aston's small fitness center), it’s worth checking out Park Shore Waikiki instead.

Mauna Lani
68-1400 Mauna Lani Drive

This beautiful luxury beach resort on the Kohala Coast is chock-full of excellent features: top-rated dining, golfing, tennis, fitness training, and spa experiences. It's pricier than some comparable resorts in the area, but free extras help compensate (valet parking, Wi-Fi, and newspaper delivery, to name a few). Free activities at the on-site Hawaiian cultural center -- including tours of the historic rock carvings and the former royal fishing ponds on the grounds -- are also a highlight.

Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
2605 Kaanapali Pkwy, Maui

Situated right on the popular Kaanaapli beach with views of the landmark Black Rock, the location of the Sheraton Maui can’t be beat. And this upscale mega-resort fully takes advantage of its prime real estate, offering ocean views from a majority of its 508 sleek, contemporary rooms. Spanning 23 acres, the expansive resort features a full array of features, including a lovely spa, modern fitness room, five restaurants, and a large lagoon pool and lazy river. The snorkeling from the end of the beach is some of the best in Maui -- and it’s no secret, as this area is often crowded, especially in peak seasons. Starwood fans may want to compare rates with the Westin Maui, which has an especially impressive pool complex.

The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas
6 Kai Ala Drive

Situated on 26 acres, the expansive Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas is an upscale family-friendly resort offering a slew of amenities for all ages. There are three lovely pools, two fitness centers, a beautiful spa, and a daily entertainment program that includes activities ranging from Hawaiian culture classes to craft fairs and koi fish feeding. Food is good and varied, and the hotel’s three restaurants offer Italian, Hawaiian, and American eats, plus outdoor seating surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens. Rooms include spacious studios and suites with one and two bedrooms, all featuring fully equipped kitchens, balconies, and marble bathrooms with separate showers and jetted tubs. The atmosphere is heavily geared toward families; couples or solo travelers looking for a quiet escape may want to consider the sensational, all-inclusive Travaasa Hana or Makena Beach and Golf Resort.

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach
2365 Kalakaua Avenue

Originally opened in 1901, the beachfront Moana Surfrider has a historic atmosphere that's blended with royal Hawaiian charm, though there are some flaws in the four-pearl package. The beach is gorgeous, but crowded, and there's only one pool for nearly 800 rooms, but the hotel has one of the nicest spas in Waikiki as well as a decent gym and several boutiques and shops. The compact rooms include features like small flat-screen TVs, excellent beds, and mini-fridges, and some have gorgeous ocean views. Wi-Fi is provided through the mandatory resort fee. Like most neighboring resorts, there's nightly entertainment and food is good, but expect to pay a premium. For something a little sharper, The Modern Honolulu has a nice handful of features, though it's not directly on the beach.

The Modern Honolulu
1775 Ala Moana Boulevard

The 353-room Modern Honolulu is a chic hotel catering to youthful guests with its gorgeous outdoor pools with live music, bars, and lounging areas. This is a luxury property with lots of amenities, including a spa, exercise room, and lobby bar along with some extra notable features including a trendy nightclub. Rooms are fresh, white, and beachy; some have balconies with water views and all have Keurig coffee machines. The beach is an eight-minute walk away. Guests looking for something closer to the water may want to consider The Royal Hawaiian which is right on the beach.

Royal Lahaina Resort
2780 Kekaa Drive, Kaanapali Beach

The mid-range Royal Lahaina Resort is a solid bang-for-your-buck pick on Kaanapali Beach. With 350 rooms, two pools, a nightly luau, 11 tennis courts, an open-air restaurant, a tiny spa, and a modern fitness center, this property has many of the same amenities as its pricier neighbors. Plus, it offers free Wi-Fi and doesn’t charge a daily resort fee. The hotel shows some signs of age, but its rooms have been nicely refreshed and feature tasteful Hawaiian inspired decor. Travelers should note that entry-level rooms are located in the not-so-nice Kaanapali Ocean Inn next door. Those looking for something a bit more upscale may prefer the Sheraton Maui Resort, which has better amenities but is pricier.

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali
2365 Kaanapali Parkway, Maui

The expansive Westin Maui Resort & Spa is an upscale property with direct access to swimmable Kaanapali Beach and popular Whalers' Village. There are a whopping 771 rooms with either simple, Hawaiian-inspired decor or more modern and elegant furnishings in the Beach Tower. Regardless, rooms have flat-screen TVs, desks, and mini-fridges, plus furnished balconies. With the number of guests and size of the resort, lines can be long and service is more efficient than personal. Prices here are lower than neighboring hotels, though, and this Westin offers a slew of above-average amenities like a five-pool aquatic playground, three restaurants, and a full-service spa and gym. Unfortunately, the resort is undergoing renovations to the property through April 2020, with some areas, including parts of the pool, being closed or disturbed. Additional, a daily resort fee (common in Maui) is charged. Couples looking for a quieter, more romantic getaway may prefer the hip Andaz Maui at Wailea.

Aston Mahana at Kaanapali
110 Kaanapali Shores Place

Direct beach access and guaranteed ocean views are the biggest draws at the Aston Mahana, but the quality of the 215 individually owned condominiums varies widely. Plus, guests get next to no service and few amenities. Trade oceanfront for consistent room quality at the Outrigger Aina Nalu, or go with a fuller package of stuff to do at the Marriott or Westin time-share rentals.
