Four Seasons Resort Lanai
1 Manele Bay Road

The five-pearl Four Seasons Resort Lanai occupies an exclusive enclave on the tiny island of Lanai. A 45-minute ferry ride from Maui, Lanai feels worlds away from civilization, and the Four Seasons entices guests with 213 impeccably decorated rooms and a bevy of fantastic amenities. Two incredible lagoon-style pools overlook Hulopoe Bay, and the hotel’s beach is home to a protected marine reserve. Nobu and Malibu Farm are two of the noteworthy dinging options here, and the on-site Jack Nicklaus-designed Manele Golf Course is often considered one of the best in Hawaii. The atmosphere here is refined yet relaxed, though families may prefer the more kid-friendly Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

Lanikai Beach Rentals LLC
1277 Mokulua Dr

Lanikai Bed and Breakfast is a great destination for couples or group travelers who want to experience Hawaii in a relaxing, lazy beach town. The family-run B&B is located near a beach in the residential area of Kailua, on the cooler, less crowded, windward side of the island of Oahu. There are two suite-style rooms, both with kitchenettes. Amenities are basically non-existent (there's no pool, restaurant, or gym), but the trade-off is that guests get the authentic experience of local Hawaiian living with gracious hosts.

The Hula Breeze
172 Kuumele Pl

For guests that want to feel more like they're living in Hawaii than visiting, The Hula Breeze is a good choice. Situated in a private home, there are only three suites at this property, making for a restful retreat. Bright, airy rooms are fashioned with comfy bedding, kitchenettes, and modern amenities. The private bathrooms have showers only, but are kept spotless. An amazing white sand beach is just a short walk from the property. Families should note that kids under 10 aren't allowed.

Travaasa Hana, Maui
5031 Hana Hwy

The Travaasa Hana, Maui overlooking Hana Bay delivers rustic luxury and all-inclusive packages in the middle of Maui's lush, secluded east coast. Visitors must make the long, windy drive along the Road to Hana or take a short flight from the main airport -- free for some packages -- to reach this peaceful oceanfront property. The 71 stand-alone bungalows have separate tubs and showers, couches, and big furnished terraces with garden or ocean views, but no air-conditioning, TVs, or radios. Expansive grounds house two outdoor pools, a hot tub, an elegant spa with outdoor hot tubs, a wellness pavilion with daily yoga and meditation classes, tennis courts, and a small fitness center. Dining options include The Preserve Kitchen + Bar, which is open all day and has live music on occasion, and a poolside bar serving light fare during the day, plus the nearby Hana Ranch. All are on the pricey side, but all-inclusive packages that include credits for spa treatments are available. Note that the beach is off-site. This property is in a league of its own, but for something easier to reach, consider the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Hana Kai Maui
4865 Uakea Rd

At the end of the spectacular views and unnerving turns on the road to Hana, the condos at Hana Kai Maui offer a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the unique scenery of this remote part of Maui. This mid-range condo hotel offers 18 rooms, with studio, one-, and two-bedroom units, updated with contemporary decor and full kitchens. While the quiet town of Hana consists of only a few small shops and two restaurants, there are picturesque beaches and cool waterfall hikes close by. Hana Kai Maui lacks a pool or other amenities, but the tranquil atmosphere and amazing views of a unique black pebble beach will win over most weary travelers.

Hanalei Colony Resort
5-7130 Kuhio Highway

The three-pearl Hanalei Colony Resort embodies what many travelers to Kauai seek -- a rustic, relaxed place to experience peace and quiet while immersed in some of the most spectacular scenery on the island. In keeping with the back-to-breathing theme here, there are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. Instead, the 48 spacious two-bedroom units all have full kitchens, island-style furniture, and generous lanais with views of the ocean, which laps at the property. Features include a small spa, pool, hot tub, and a Mediterranean restaurant, though housekeeping only takes place every three days and breakfast is a minimal affair. Those wanting a full menu of resort services will do better at the similarly priced Marriott in Lihue.

Hale Ho'o Maha Bed & Breakfast
7083 Alamihi Rd.

The three-pearl, four-room Hale Ho’o Maha Bed & Breakfast is a quiet, affordable option in Wainiha, on Kauai's north shore. Tunnels Beach and the Napali Coast are a five- to 10-minute drive away. The friendly husband-and-wife owners serve a daily breakfast, and the property's hot tub is a nice perk. Island-themed rooms have king beds, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and modest bathrooms. Each also has a private lanai with garden views. Keep in mind that daily housekeeping isn't provided. Friendly pets (a parrot and cats) make this a cozy, homey place to stay, but note that children under 8 aren't allowed here. Travelers looking for more frills like a pool and restaurant should consider the Hanalei Colony Resort, a one-minute drive down the road, though it's pricier.

Hanalei Surfboard House
5459 Weke Rd

The two-and-a-half-pearl, three-room Hanalei Surfboard House is a funky, cozy option amid the high-end vacation rentals located in the town of Hanalei. The house is across the street from Hanalei Bay. Its rooms feature an eclectic combination of vintage art and decor, with private lanais, simple kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi, and king beds with Egyptian cotton sheets. Simon, the owner, lives on the property and comes in handy for local recommendations. Features are otherwise limited, and there are some catches to note. For bookings of less than a week, you'll have to wait until last minute, and there's a hefty one-time cleaning fee. Additionally, children are not allowed. The nearby Hanalei Inn is half the price, but comes with half the charm and double the distance to the beach.

Kalani Hawaii Private Lodging
59-222 B Kamehameha Hwy, Haleiwa

The 10-room Kalani Hawaii Private Lodging is a hostel with a bed-and-breakfast vibe, thanks to owners Maria and Bernie, the latter of whom is a former Triple Crown of Surfing contest director. All of the rooms, both private or dorm-style, are uniquely decorated; some are more modern than others. The grounds are small but pretty and the beaches of North Shore, known for excellent surfing, are just across the street. It's a good spot for surfers who don't need many amenities and plan to head out to the beach each day, but it's a bit isolated for visitors who want to focus on Honolulu area attractions.

Kaua'i Marriott Resort
3610 Rice Street, Hawaii Tax ID W89793163-01

The 356-room Kauai Marriott Resort is a superlative unto itself. It has beautifully landscaped beachfront grounds, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, and one of the largest pools in Hawaii. Rooms are sharp and spacious, featuring a sober business-like style plus balconies, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers. With five restaurants and a full spectrum of water sports and other activities on offer, this place works well for both families and couples seeking romance. Several huge ballrooms make it popular for events and business gatherings. Rooms here don't come cheap, but guests get their money’s worth, and it's cheaper than the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort, where rooms are quite dated.
